Clayton State Partners With SunTrust to Bring Real-Time Financial News and Real-Life Experiences to Business College Students
There are many ways that organizations like SunTrust can support higher education and their communities. One especially creative means was on display on Wednesday, Oct. 9 in the lobby of the College of Business at Clayton State when SunTrust and the University joined together to dedicate the College’s SunTrust-sponsored Business Ticker and Financial News Display.
The dedication of the ticker was followed by the Dean’s Distinguished Speaker Series Inaugural Kick-off Event, “Lighting the Way to Financial Well-Being,” presented by E. Jenner Wood III, chairman, president and CEO of SunTrust Bank, Atlanta Division.
“We believe the news ticker and lecture series at Clayton State University will bring a deeper understanding of financial market activity for all students and fits perfectly with our focus on financial literacy,” says Kirby A. Thompson, SunTrust Bank senior vice president, Community and Government Affairs. “We are pleased to partner with Clayton State University to invest in students that live, bank, and work in our community.”
“A visualization of our market puts a picture to our world,” said Clayton State President Dr. Thomas Hynes in his address at the dedication. “The ticker makes the College of Business lobby more than just a space, but a space integrated with learning. When the students gather here, they gather in groups and begin in the building of teams and collectives. These teams and collectives are the foundations for our future.”
“This technology will engage the students to think analogically. We have a large amount of first generation college students who need that exposure,” added Dr. Avinandan (Avi) Mukherjee, dean of the College of Business.
Mukherjee also points out that the lobby lounge area of the College of Business has become a place for Clayton State students to meet, study, and spend time between classes -- it is the heart of the College. To add to the educational experience of the space, Clayton State installed a 16-foot business ticker to run along the main wall of the lobby to display real-time stock information and a 55-inch LED display that runs live financial news throughout the day. With options to view world markets, the ticker runs virtually 24 hours a day.
Since part of the mission of the College of Business is to provide a student-centered environment and to use technology to enhance student learning, SunTrust’s support of the business ticker and financial news display is closely aligned with the College fulfilling this mission for its more than 1,000 declared business majors, plus those students from other majors who are enrolled in one or more business courses.
As part of the implementation plan for the ticker, the College of Business plans to schedule a series of lectures that include CEOs of publicly-traded companies in Atlanta and investor relations professionals from companies such as SunTrust. These individuals will speak to how they position their companies for investors and analysts. It was as the kickoff to this speaker series that Wood spoke following the dedication.
Wood’s presentation for the Dean’s Distinguished Speaker Series began with an engaging segment, answering questions on SunTrust’s purpose, Lighting the Way to Financial Well-Being. Wood also noted how Clayton State and SunTrust's purposes in educating the community line up. On a personal note, Wood urged students to invest in 401K's and in retirement in general.
Wood also mentioned the risk that many regional employers face; not having a sufficient available work force. However, he also noted that that was where Clayton State came in, and he encouraged the students to proceed in both statistical training and communications.
“Building a better community makes better places for us all,” Wood concluded.
