Clayton State University student Heidi Ulrich (McDonough) is a junior majoring in Psychology who aspires to be an alcohol and substance abuse counselor in Georgia. Recently, Ulrich learned about the Atlanta Community Food Bank through one of her professors.
“Dr. (Victoria) Figiel notified our class about an event on campus to take place on Wednesday, Apr. 25, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.,” Ulrich says. “The announcement was made several weeks ago, so from that point we would seek out and learn about how we could help the Atlanta Food Bank. I went to their website and thought it might be a great idea to organize a food drive on campus for this event. I called them up to see if they could deliver barrels on short notice and James Johnson, the person in charge of the delivery of the barrels, was able to make it happen. We got the barrels within three days.”
Ulrich then set the barrels up in various spots on campus, handed out plastic bags, and sent out an email to the student info page.
“The rest is up to the community,” Ulrich says. “I hope everyone will come together. I always get more out of volunteering than what I put into it, so I don't hesitate anymore when I see an opportunity to help others.”
Everyone is invited to participate and get involved by helping collect food and non-perishable items. Currently there are four collection stations on campus, located in the Student Activity Center (by the information desk), at the information desk in the James M. Baker University Center, in the Arts and Science Building, and in the Natural and Behavioral Sciences Building common area at the vending machines.
