MLK Commemorative Events
The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site and Ebenezer Baptist Church will commemorate the annual observance of King Remembrance Week which honors the life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with a special Wreath-Laying Ceremony on Apr. 4, to commence the Park’s week long series of public activities. The Wreath-Laying Ceremony will take place at Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, Heritage Sanctuary in Atlanta, at 5:30 p.m.
The National Park Service along with members of Ebenezer Baptist Church and the King Center will place a replica of the 1968 wreath on the historic location of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Heritage Sanctuary as it appeared on Apr. 9, 1968. There will be a brief program with special featured remarks by Reverend Dr. Raphael Warnock along with Elder Bernice King, CEO, The King Center, Inc., and National Park Service Superintendent Judy Forte before laying the wreath upon the church’s façade.
Following the Wreath-Laying , there will be an hour of silence from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., while King’s sermons, “I’ve Been to the Mountain Top” and “Drum Major Instinct” are played at the tomb of Dr. & Mrs. King and Horizon Sanctuary of Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Additionally, at 7 p.m., Ebenezer Baptist Church will have a special Worship Service, “Strange Fruit: A Service of Memory, A Call to Action” in Horizon Sanctuary.
MALS Thesis Discussion, Apr. 5
Melvin Cody, a spring graduate of the MALS program concentrating in Political Science, will discuss his MA thesis on Thursday, Apr. 5, from 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m., in room T215 of Clayton Hall. Members of the University community are similarly welcome to attend, listen, and ask questions.
A Cameo Appearance at Clayton State?
Sort of. Actually, the Music & Entertainment Industry Student Association (MEISA) of Clayton State University is hosting a speaking engagement by former Universal/Motown Records executive Cameo Carlson on Friday, Apr. 6. However, it will be anything but a typical “cameo” appearance, as listeners will have a chance to hear an insider’s take on the music industry.
Carlson will be talking about her experiences with Motown Records, life in the music industry, opportunities for students, and her views on the future of the music industry, starting at 1 p.m., in room UC272 of the James M. Baker University Center. Her presentation will be free and open to the public.
The head of digital business development for Borman Entertainment, and the former executive vice president of Universal Motown Republic Group (UMRG), Carlson has been at the forefront of the digital music revolution from its earliest stages. From terrestrial radio to online radio to digital and mobile commerce, she has demonstrated an ability to stay one step ahead of the industry throughout her career. Her roles have included mobile, online and digital sales, product development and marketing for artists such as Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum, Amy Winehouse, Lil Wayne and Jack Johnson.
Carlson has also been responsible for marketing and selling three of the 10 biggest digital albums in history, as well as breaking mobile ringtone records for first week sales, top-selling of all time and number of multi-platinum sales.

Clayton State Education Speaker Series Continues, Apr. 9
Clayton State University’s Education Speaker Series, “Teaching in a Diverse World,” will continue on Monday, Apr. 9.
Failing schools; furlough days; budget cuts; scapegoating; charter schools; teacher pay for performance; dropouts; cheating scandals; standardized testing mania; the elimination of recess, music, art and phys. ed.… through the complex confusion of reform measures that have become status quo for public education in Georgia, a small group of dedicated educators and education activists are working to provide real solutions and improve education for all teachers, students, and families in Georgia. They are: “Fighting to Teach: An Education Advocacy Panel.”
On Apr. 9, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., in room UC272 of the James M. Baker University Center, the Clayton State Department of Teacher Education will present Fighting to Teach: Education Advocacy Panel (and workshop). This interactive panel of educators and education activists is struggling to improve education for all teachers, students, and families in Georgia. The panel will include a variety of speakers from lawyers to teachers and political activists — all with ideas for creating change in our classrooms, our schools, and our world. This event is free and open to the public.

Clayton State Chorale/Griffin Choral Arts Joint Concert, Apr. 10
The Clayton State University Chorale and the Griffin Choral Arts (GCA) community chorus will offer a joint concert, Apr. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Spivey Hall, located on the Clayton State University campus.
“The idea of this joint concert has, at least in some ways, been germinating ever since GCA was organized in 2007 by artistic director Dr. Stephen J. Mulder,” says Dr. Bill Pasch, Clayton State Professor of English Emeritus and now singer in and board member of GCA.
The concert will feature each chorus singing selections on its own, but the groups will also join forces for two anthems: "Lux Aurumque," by Eric Whitacre and "Hail, Gladdening Light," by Charles Wood. GCA will also sing works by John Rutter, Morten Lauridsen, and Rosephanye Powell (among others), plus the famous "Chanticleer song" "Ave Maria" by Franz Biebl, sung by the men of GCA.
The concert is free and open to the public.
First-Year Student Honor Society to Induct at Clayton State University, Apr. 10
Clayton State University is now one of 14 chapters in the State of Georgia to hold a chapter of National Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society for first-year students.
Dr. Glenda Earwood, executive director of National Alpha Lambda Delta, will install the Clayton State chapter on Tuesday, Apr. 10, at 7 p.m., in the ballroom of the Clayton State Student Activities Center. At this time, the first class of 44 students will be initiated into the honor society as charter members and the organization’s first officers will be installed. Clayton State President Dr. Thomas J. Hynes and other academic officials will be installed as honorary members as well.
Presents “A Teachable Moment: Africana Womanism and Womanism” with Guest Speaker Dr. Layli Maparyan, Apr. 11
The Clayton State University Office of Interdisciplinary Studies presents “A Teachable Moment: Africana Womanism and Womanism” with guest speaker Dr. Layli Maparyan from 12:45 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Apr. 11 in Clayton Hall, room T100. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
Maparyan is an associate professor of women’s studies and associated faculty of African American studies at Georgia State University. She received her Ph.D. in Psychology from Temple University in 1994, her M.S. in Psychology from Penn State University in 1991, and her B.A. from Spelman College, where she majored in Philosophy, in 1986. She is the editor of “The Womanist Reader” (Routledge, 2006), a comprehensive anthology documenting the first quarter century of womanist thought and the first-ever text to focus on womanism “on its own.”

Nursing Workforce Diversity Conference, Apr. 12
Clayton State University’s School of Nursing (SoN), via its Nursing Workforce Diversity Grant, is preparing to host its Annual Cultural Diversity Conference. The conference, for Clayton State nursing faculty, staff and students, will take place on Thursday, Apr. 12, from 9 a.m. until noon in the Student Activities Center ballroom. There will be overflow seating in room 101 of the Harry S. Downs Center with a live stream of the event.
The keynote speech by Dr. David Satcher, 16
th surgeon general of the United States, will address and identify the healthcare needs of the greater Atlanta area and the State of Georgia, recognizing the impact of diversity on healthcare outcomes, and discuss applying strategies for improving the healthcare of diverse populations.
Dr. Karla Larson will also speak on recognizing the origin of bias, prejudice and stereotypes, understanding the role a diverse nursing presence plays in addressing health disparities in America, and applying the principles of delivering culturally sensitive care to the changing demographics of the American patient population.
Clayton State Theatre’s “I Love You, You’re Perfect Now Change” Opens Apr. 12
It’s a musical! Clayton State University does it again! The talented Theatre majors will be exploring love and relationships and the cumbersome situations that befall many of us as we move toward marriage and managing the issues that plague us on a daily basis with its spring 2012 production, “I Love You, You’re Perfect Now Change.”
The Clayton State Theatre invites you out on opening night, Thursday, Apr. 12, at 7:30 p.m., and to a scheduled talk back between the audience and the cast members immediately following the production.

Cygnet Schedules Annual Launch Party, Apr. 19
Clayton State University literary magazine that highlights the literary and artistic work of the student body,
Cygnet, will hold its annual launch party on Thursday, Apr. 19, at 7 p.m., in room 101 in the Harry S. Downs Center.
The launch party is open to everyone on campus and to the community. The featured readers at the party will be students whose work was selected for this year’s issue.
The student editors of this year’s
Cygnet include: Sebastian Lubbers (Lakeland, Fla.), Jasmine Cason (Jonesboro), Christen Greene (Savannah) and Gregory Kirk (Jonesboro).
Charity Yard Sale, Apr. 20, Apr. 21
A charity yard sale to benefit Shining Light Ministries will be held at Bethany Baptist Church, 4 Bethany Rd., McDonough, Ga., on Friday, Apr. 20 and Saturday, Apr. 21.

SBDC to Hold “Starting a Business” in Griffin, Apr. 24
Clayton State University’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will be holding a “Starting a Business”workshop at the Griffin Welcome Center/Griffin Chamber of Commerce, 143 N. Hill St., in Griffin, on Tuesday, Apr. 24, from 9 a.m. to noon.
“Starting a Business” is a comprehensive workshop on important decisions that need to be made prior to opening a business.
The cost is $69 per person with 50 percent off each additional person. All Clayton State students and employees also get 50 percent off.

Jupiter String Quartet to be Featured on Public Broadcasting Atlanta., Apr. 25
Public Broadcasting Atlanta (PBA), which operates WABE 90.1 FM, will be featuring the Jupiter String Quartet on Wednesday, Apr. 25, with a recorded performance and interview.
The Jupiters will air on John Lemley’s “City Café” program on WABE from noon to 1 p.m. The performance was originally given at the PBA studio for members of PBA’s Cornerstone Society. The musicians’ edited interview, also with Lemley, will air during the same program. This broadcast occurs during PBA’s pledge week.
The performance in question was a highlight of the Jupiter String Quartet’s February/March 2012 residency week at Clayton State University’s Spivey Hall, under the auspices of “Project Jupiter,” a three-year community-outreach initiative of Spivey Hall and the Jupiter String Quartet. Project Jupiter is made possible with special funding support from the National Endowment for the Arts, South Arts, and The Hampton Inn of Morrow, Ga.
