Lakers to Make 10th Straight NCAA Division II Tournament Appearance, Mar. 14
For the 10th straight season, the Clayton State women’s basketball team will be dancing in March.
The NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship committee officially released the 64-team field for the “Big Dance” Sunday evening, and the Lakers received a bid for the 2014 National Tournament as one of eight teams selected from the NCAA Division II Southeast Region.
Clayton State (22-6) will be the number two seed from the region and will face seventh-seeded Limestone (24-5) in the opening round. Lenoir-Rhyne (24-5), from the South Atlantic Conference, is the top-seeded team in the region and will be the host for the event.
The Southeast Regional will take place on Friday, Saturday and Monday, Mar. 14, Mar. 15 and Mar. 17 at the Shuford Memorial Gymnasium on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory, N.C.
Clayton State Scholarships
Beginning with the 2014-2015 academic year (Fall Semester 2014 and Spring Semester 2015), students will no longer need to complete a scholarship application for Clayton State scholarships managed by the Financial Aid Office. We will be utilizing a new scholarship software program that will identify students who meet the criteria for each scholarship.
For the scholarships managed by the Financial Aid Office, students do not need to take any action to be considered.All accepted entering freshmen, transfer, graduate, and enrolled continuing students will be automatically considered for all scholarships for which they meet the minimum criteria.
For some scholarships additional information may be needed before an award can be made. In thosecases all students who meet the minimum criteria will be sent an email to their Clayton State account informing them of their consideration for a particular scholarship. The email will contain instructions on what the student needs to do if they wish to be considered further for that particular scholarship.
The scholarship selection process will begin after Apr. 1. Students who are selected for a Clayton State scholarship that is managed by the Financial Aid Office will receive notification through their Clayton State email account. Hotlanta, a six-piece Dixieland jazz band from (guess where) Atlanta, recreates the sounds of jazz as heard during the early decades of this century in New Orleans. Using clarinet, cornet, trombone, banjo, tuba and drums, they bring to life old favorites like “Royal Garden Blues,” “South, Riverboat Shuffle,” “Fidgety Feet” and of course, the classic, “When the Saints Go Marchin’ In.”

Atlanta Opera to Perform at Spivey Hall, Mar. 25
Just in time for Clayton State University’s Culture Shock week, the Atlanta Opera’s touring show will be performed at Spivey Hall on Tuesday, Mar. 25 at 9:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.
Their performance is The Knightly News, an operatic news broadcast of the woes of Prince Charming and his Tri-kingdom state of affairs, including his own search for a princess, a missing grandmother and frighteningly strong winds that are blowing down houses in the land. This fun-filled children’s opera is for all ages and will have students talking about fairy-tales and humming melodies for weeks to come. Feel free to bring your kids or just come out and enjoy the performance!

Free STD Screening Results are Ready in UHS
For anyone who participated in the free STD screening offered in the clinic on Feb. 20, the results have all been received this week in University Health Services. Anyone with a positive result has been contacted directly by a member of the UHS team at the contact number provided at the time of the screening. If you would like a copy of your test results or would like to confirm a negative result, please feel free to call UHS at (678) 466-4940 or stop by the office at Clayton Station, Building 1000.

What’s Your Forte? VPA Holding Student Singer Auditions, Mar. 18, Mar. 25
Clayton State University’s Arts and Concert Management class is hosting an event where we will have local vocalists from Clayton State and local high schools show off their skill.
The winner will have the chance to make a music video, which will be produced by Clayton State film students. But this isn’t just about music. Performers are asked to bring canned goods to the event, and patrons will receive discounted admission if they bring a can.

Spring 2014 Visiting Writers Reading Series, Mar. 20
The spring 2014 edition of the Visiting Writers Reading Series will be held on Thursday, Mar. 20 and will feature a day with Mariahadessa Ekere Tallie.
Tallie is a writer, educator, and performer who has been a featured speaker at universities, festivals and events throughout Europe and North America. She is the poetry editor of the literary magazine African Voices. Her work deals with silence, sexism and racism.
Tallie’s day at Clayton State will begin at 11:15 a.m., with a lecture in room UC 272 of the James M. Baker University Center. Tallie will be speaking on finding empowerment through writing and being an African American woman, mother, writer, and herbalist.
After lunch, she will give a poetry reading from 2:10 p.m. to 3:25 p.m., also in UC 272. The reading will take 20 minutes and will be followed by a Q&A and book signing.
From 3:35 p.m. to 4:50 p.m. she will visit Dr. Brigitte Byrd’s Advanced Poetry class and meet with students from that class.

The Office of Career Services will present its annual Job and Graduate School Fair for Clayton State students and alumni on Thursday, Mar. 20, in the Student Activities Center, from noon to 3 p.m.
The Job and Graduate School Fair brings dozens of organizations and graduate schools to campus for the opportunity to network with current Clayton State University students and graduates. Prospective employers will have opportunities for full-time, part-time and internship opportunities and graduate schools will share information about their programs.

Withdrawal Date Changed to Mar. 21
Due to the number of class days lost this semester as a result of inclement weather, midterm grades will now be posted in the DUCK by Mar. 17 at 5 p.m. The last day to withdrawal from a course and receive a grade of W has been changed from Mar. 7 to Mar. 21.

Student Academic Conference, Mar. 28
The 2014 Student Academic Conference will be held on Friday, Mar. 28, from noon to 4 p.m. Students from all majors and disciplines may give a presentation in the form of a poster presentation, oral presentation, or performance (whether it’s musical, theater, poetry readings, etc.) reflecting their scholarly activity at Clayton State University.

There will be a keynote speaker from noon to 1 p.m. in room UC272 of the James M. Baker University Center. David Lowery is an American vocalist, songwriter and guitarist from San Antonio who received a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1984. He formed the alternative rock band Camper Van Beethoven and rock band called Cracker. He has also worked as a financial analyst, and started his own studio, record company and publishing company. He is a producer at the Sound of Music Studios in Richmond, Va.
In 2007, Lowery was appointed as an advisor to the collective action www.ThePoint.com which evolved into the social deals site www.Groupon.com.
In 2011, he began teaching the economics and finance of the music business at the University of Georgia.
Recently, he has become an outspoken critic of Silicon Valley and its aggressive attacks on artists and other content creators. He has testified to Congress twice on behalf of artists.
Lowery will speak about “Creativity,” the theme for the conference.
Poster presentations will go from noon to 2 p.m., and oral presentations will be from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Judges will be needed for the various sessions and to decide best presentations for awards. 35th Annual Sickle Cell Road Race/Walk, Apr. 12
The 35th Annual Sickle Cell Road Race/Walk will be held on Saturday, Apr. 12, starting at 9 a.m. at Welcome All Park in College Park.
Hosted by South Fulton Running Partners, the 7K (that’s right, it’s a 7K, or approximately 4.35 miles) is the RRCA State Championship and will also include a 4K (just under 2.5 miles – they must like odd distances) walk and a race expo on Friday, Apr. 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Runners can use their times for placement in the 2014 Peachtree Road Race.

Clayton State Campus Mediation Tournament, Apr. 25
Mediation is a negotiation process in which the disputing parties are assisted by a neutral third-party — a mediator.
In fall of 2013, Clayton State University students won first place at the 2013 International Intercollegiate Mediation Tournament.
Help to continue that tradition and be part of the First Clayton State University Student Mediation Tournament, open to all Clayton State students.

2014 Recruitment Extended for F.I.R.S.T Step Peer Mentoring Program
The Office of Orientation & New Student Programs is still recruiting for 2014-2015 “F.I.R.S.T. Step Peer Mentors” – Fostering and Initiating Relationships for a Successful Transition.
The F.I.R.S.T. Step Peer Mentoring program promotes and supports academic success, social adjustment and development and retention for its first-year student participants. F.I.R.S.T. Step Peer Mentoring will welcome its third group of freshman students in fall 2014.

Course/Instructor Evaluations- SESSION I ONLY
Please complete the course and instructor evaluations for SESSION I classes by Wednesday, Mar. 5 (the evaluation surveys will be available via both the SWAN and the DUCK beginning today). For each class you are taking, there is one online survey which combines the course and the instructor(s) questions. The evaluations give Clayton State University valuable feedback regarding the curriculum and the instruction that you receive. This survey data is used to improve courses, to evaluate the instructors, and to satisfy accreditation requirements.
Your instructor may set aside time for the evaluations. If no time is set aside, you should complete the evaluations on your own, using one of the following two methods:
· Log onto the SWAN portal, clicking the MY COURSES tab and locating the COURSE SURVEY channel. Your courses will be listed. Click on the course title to open the survey for that course.
· Log onto the SWAN, then go to the DUCK. You should see a message under the Course and Instructor Surveys section of the DUCK Message Portal containing a link to your evaluations. If you choose to complete the evaluations at a later time, you can always get to the DUCK Message Portal via the Personal Information menu.
In order for the survey to be complete you must enter a response to ALL required questions and click the SUBMIT button at the bottom of the survey. Please note, there is also an option to opt out of each evaluation by clicking on a button at the bottom of the survey. Students in SPRING SESSION I classes who do not complete the surveys will not be able to view their grades in those classes until Mar. 21.
The department heads and instructors only receive the summary data of the class’s comments after grades become final. Students’ names are not connected in any way to the evaluations.

Operation Study Ambassadors
- You have a MUST SEE ADVISOR hold placed on your account each semester before registration. Advising is required to ensure that students are following their curriculum requirements and have a direct point of contact to clarify university policies and procedures. This is also a time for advisors to check on your academic progress.
- You should be advised by an advisor in your major. All first-year students will be advised in the First-Year Advising & Retention Center. The name of your advisor is listed in the DUCK.
- You might have other holds that will prevent you from registering. Check the DUCK today to “VIEW HOLDS”, and contact the office listed to satisfy the requirements of each hold before registration.
- All professional academic advisors use an online scheduling system called AdvisorTrac to schedule advisement appointment tutoring.clayton.edu:8001/TracWeb40/Default.html. You should contact faculty advisors directly to determine their availability for advising.
- The summer and fall class schedules are available at apps.clayton.edu/courses/schedule. Since classrooms are still being assigned, and minor adjustments will be made to the schedule, please check again on Mar. 28 to view the final schedule.

Baker Center Wells Fargo ATM Removed – Here are Your Options
The Wells Fargo ATM in the James M. Baker University Center had been removed earlier than scheduled. We plan to have a replacement ATM from SunTrust will be installed as soon as possible.
In the interim, if you need cash immediately then please follow these options below:
1. There are two Higher One ATMs on campus (foreign ATM charges may apply):
o On the first floor of the Baker University Center, outside the LakerCard Center
o On the first floor of Edgewater Hall, adjacent to the vending machines
2. Checks made payable to “CASH” may be cashed at the Bursar’s Office for up to $50. See other requirements at http://www.clayton.edu/bursar/Important-Registration-Information
3. There are two Wells Fargo branch locations near campus:

Applications Now Being Accepted for Women’s Forum Scholarships
Clayton State Women’s Forum announces that applications are now being accepted for 2014 Scholarships.
The General Student Scholarship is for undergraduate female students who have completed at least one semester at Clayton State, have at least two semesters remaining before graduation, and have an overall GPA of at least 2.8. The Staff Member Scholarship is for full-time regular, non-faculty female employees who are enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program. The application deadline for both scholarships is Monday, Mar. 25, 2014.
Women’s Forum also offers a Student Success Emergency Scholarship for a student who is near graduation and experiences a sudden emergency that would prevent her from continuing her progression toward degree completion. Applications for this scholarship are accepted throughout the year.
