Purchase a Meal Plan with Financial Aid, by Aug. 20
Did you know you can purchase a meal plan with your unused financial aid? Well, you can!
Between Aug. 5 and Aug. 20, purchase a meal plan online and have it paid for with financial aid. Log in to the SWAN, click the ESSENTIALS tab, and locate the Financial Aid Meal Plan channel. Complete the information requested and select the meal plan and quantity. If your purchase is approved (based on available aid), your meal plan will be available for use within approximately one business day.
You Can Purchase a Laptop in The Loch Shop with Bookstore Bucks, by Aug. 20
Need to purchase a Dell laptop from the Loch Shop with Bookstore Bucks, but you don’t have enough after buying books? You can request up to $1,000 additional Bookstore Bucks (from previously-awarded financial aid) through the SWAN!
Between Aug. 5 and Aug. 20, log in to the SWAN, click the ESSENTIALS tab, and locate the Laptop Purchase with Financial Aid channel. After your request has been submitted and reviewed, you will be notified by Clayton State email to let you know if your request has been approved. If approved, your funds will be added to your Bookstore Bucks account for use in the Loch Shop.
Dining Services Resumes Normal Hours on Saturday, Aug. 10
During the semester break, Jazzman’s and Subconnection will be open to serve you. Beginning Saturday, Aug. 10, all dining locations will resume their normal fall semester operating schedule. The Lakeside Dining Hall will resume normal service for employees on Monday, Aug. 12.
Chick-fil-A Back-2-School Supply Drive – to July 31; Back-2-School Bash, Aug. 3
It is time to start planning for the 2013-2014 school year.
In order to provide much-needed school supplies for the students in Clayton County, Chick-fil-A has partnered with the Clayton County Board of Education to host a
“Back -to -School Supply Drive” (go to http://back2schoolbash.com/How_Can_I_Help_.html) until
July 31, 2013.
Chick-fil-A is also planning a
“Back-to-School Bash” on Saturday, Aug. 3 at First Baptist Church of Jonesboro at The ROC from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This will be a FREE, action-packed event with moonwalks and local churches and businesses helping to celebrate the return to school and a successful school supply drive.

Clayton State Track and Cross Country Athletes Need Used Furniture by July 31
Head Track and Cross Country Coach Mike Mead is seeking used furniture, particularly twin beds and dressers, as well as sofas, chairs, tables, etc., that individuals would be willing to part with. It’s for a good cause — namely some of the Lakers track and cross country athletes who are coming from out of state and will be living off-campus this fall.

Register for Fall Classes by Aug. 1
If you have not yet registered for fall classes, please do so as soon as possible. Classes are filling as new students attend orientation this summer.
The registration and fee payment deadline is Aug. 1. After that date, students will be charged a $100 late registration fee. Please register as soon as possible to get a good class schedule and avoid the late fee!
Continuing Education Open House at Clayton State – Fayette, Aug. 1
The Clayton State University Center for Continuing Education will hold an Open House at the Clayton State — Fayette instructional site, 100 World Dr., Ste. 100, Peachtree City, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., on Thursday, Aug. 1.
The Clayton State – Fayette Open House will feature Information Sessions on Special Events and Program Planning, the Security Management Certificate Program and the upcoming trip to South Pacific Wonders, as well as information on the other continuing education programs that will be offered at Clayton State – Fayette this fall.
SAC Fitness Center Closed for Staff Training, Aug. 1 and Aug. 2
In preparation for the start of the new academic year and the arrival of our students, the Department of Recreation & Wellness will be conducting a comprehensive, two-day training with its student staff.

Alumni Association Accepting Nominations for Alumni Achievement Awards Until Aug. 2
The Clayton State University Alumni Association is currently accepting nominations for the 2013 Alumni Achievement Awards. The awards will be presented at the Thursday, Sept. 26 Alumni Association Achievement Awards Dinner.
Nominations are being solicited for three categories: Distinguished Alumnus, Recent Graduate Alumnus, and Outstanding “Future” Alumnus. The deadline for submitting nominations is Friday, Aug. 2, 2013.
According to Clayton State Director of Alumni Relations Leila Tatum, the Alumni Association seeks to recognize the University’s alumni and alumnae who have made significant contributions to society, and whose accomplishments, affiliations, and careers have honored the legacy of excellence at the University.
Tatum also points out that students can get in on the action too, as the Outstanding Future Alumnus category recognizes an outstanding current student, notably standout students who display strong leadership abilities and who bleed orange and blue.

AFAA Group Exercise (GX): The Practical Way™ Workshop & Primary Group Exercise Instructor Certification
Want to be a Group X Instructor?
The Department of Recreation & Wellness will host AFAA’s Group Exercise (GX): The Practical Way™ Workshop on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Primary Group Exercise Instructor Certification on Sunday, Aug. 4, also from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., in the SAC Fitness Center Studio B.
The Group Exercise Workshop is designed to prepare uncertified instructors to take the Group Exercise Certification and to refresh current instructors on their teaching skills. The Primary Group Exercise Instructor Certification will allow aspiring instructors to become certified to teach Group Exercise and includes both practical and written assessments.
These two events are open to anyone. The Practical Way™ Workshop cost is $179 and the Primary Group Exercise Instructor Certification cost is $299.

Bookstore Bucks, Starting Aug. 5
Bookstore Bucks (formerly Financial Aid Book Money) will be available Monday, Aug. 5 to Tuesday, Aug. 20. Up to $1,000 of your unused Financial Aid will automatically be deposited in your Bookstore Bucks account on Monday, Aug. 5 for you to purchase anything in the Loch Shop. After August 20, unused Bookstore Bucks are returned to your student account and refunded in late August based on your refund preference through Higher One.
Party for Good, Aug. 9
The Party for Good will be held on Friday, Aug. 9, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., in SAC Ballrooms and on the SAC Green. There will be inflatables and outdoor activities on the SAC Green and community projects facilitated by student organizations in the SAC Ballrooms.
Insanity & PiYo Instructor Certifications
The Department of Recreation & Wellness will host Beachbody’s Insanity® instructor certification on Saturday, Aug.10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and PiYo instructor training on Sunday, Aug. 11, also from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the SAC Fitness Center Studio B.

The Office of Career Services will present its Student Part-Time Job Fair on Tuesday, Aug. 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Main Street, the second floor of the James M. Baker University Center. Students are encouraged to network with employers to learn about part-time job openings on- and off-campus.
Southern Crescent Symphony Orchestra Seeking Strings Players, Auditions Aug. 13
The Southern Crescent Symphony Orchestra is currently seeking musicians for all string positions. Auditions for the orchestra's 2013-2014 season will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 13, between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. in the Clayton State University Music Building.
The audition will include a solo of your choice, sight reading and an interview concerning your playing background.

The Southern Crescent Symphony Orchestra is a community orchestra devoted to meeting the cultural needs of audiences and performers in the Southern Crescent area of Metro Atlanta. Members of the orchestra include professional musicians, music educators and amateur musicians, all of whom strive to utilize their full potential in presenting a quality musical product. For the coming season the orchestra will partner with the Clayton State University Orchestra for performances in Spivey Hall and the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church.The SCSO is conducted by Bell, Carl Rieke, and Michael Puckett. SBDC to Hold Starting a Business Workshop in Griffin, Aug. 14
The Clayton State University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will be holding a “Starting a Business Workshop” on Wednesday, Aug. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Griffin-Spalding Chamber of Commerce/Griffin Welcome Center, 143 N. Hill St., Griffin, Ga.
The cost of the workshop is $69 per person, with a 50 percent discount for current Clayton State students, faculty and staff, who should contact Heather Chaney for discount code. Also, there is 50 percent off each additional person who registers with an individual when the first person pays the full fee of $69 (discounts cannot be combined).

SBDC Class on "Writing a Living Business Plan" Aug. 15
The Clayton State University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will be presenting a class on "Writing a Living Business Plan" on Thursday, Aug. 15.
The class will run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will be held in room G127 on the first floor of the Clayton State Arts & Sciences Building. The registration fee is $69 per person.
Topics for discussion during "Writing a Living Business Plan" will include:
Telling a compelling and provocative story;
Completing a SWOT analysis;
Setting goals and key performance indicators;
Compiling sections of the plan, including marketing, HR, financial, operational;
Calculating profit and loss projections, balance sheets, cash flow statements;
Finding sources and determining the cost of capital.
A sample business plan will be among the handouts provided with the class.
