This year, the Annual Alumni Awards Dinner will be held on Thursday, Sept. 26, in the Harry S. Downs Center.
The Alumni Awards Dinner is an annual event hosted by The Alumni Association, which seeks to recognize the University’s alumni and alumnae (current and future) who have made significant contributions to society, and whose accomplishments, affiliations, and careers have honored the legacy of excellence at Clayton State University.

Parking on Campus
With the beginning of fall semester, there is always a big demand for the most convenient parking spaces on campus. However, at peak times of the day and night, that can be challenging.
Some advice to new members of our campus community and as a reminder for those returnees; parking lots G and H, which are located behind Public Safety, are two lots that are very popular and fill up quick. A suggested alternative for a location where parking is always available are parking lots K and L, which are located near the Student Activities Center and the tennis courts.
Although walking from those lots may take you a few more minutes than from one of the more popular lots, you will avoid both the stress of searching for closer spaces and the time spent doing so.

magazine has a feature on Atlanta that includes a sidebar on Clayton State and mentions the business, psychology, biology, health care management, nursing, criminal justice and archival studies programs as well as, of course, Spivey Hall.
Bookstore Bucks (formerly Financial Aid Book Money) will be available Monday, Aug. 5 to Tuesday, Aug. 20. Up to $1,000 of your unused Financial Aid will automatically be deposited in your Bookstore Bucks account on Monday, Aug. 5 for you to purchase anything in the Loch Shop. After August 20, unused Bookstore Bucks are returned to your student account and refunded in late August based on your refund preference through Higher One.

Congressman Scott’s Health Fair, Aug. 17
Congressman David Scott’s Ninth Annual 13th Congressional District Health Fair will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17. This event will mark close to a decade of partnership with Metropolitan Atlanta’s leading healthcare professionals to provide free health exams and information for my constituents.
This year’s event will take place at Mundy’s Mill High School, which is located at 9652 Fayetteville Rd., Jonesboro, Ga., and will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

You can get a free Boots makeover (even if you don’t need one) at The Loch Shop on Tuesday, Aug. 20. Boots makeup is the largest cosmetic company in the U.K. and has earned Good Housekeeping’s seal of approval on several of their products as well as being recognized by Redbook for one of their top 15 products under $20. The makeovers are available to any student, staff or faculty member.
Mock Mediation Meeting, Aug. 20
For several years, Clayton State students have been participating in Mock Mediation Tournaments at local universities.
Mediation is a voluntary process in which parties attempt to resolve a dispute with the help of a neutral third party.
We are having an organizational meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 20 at 5 p.m., in room UC 424 of the James M. Baker University Center, to plan for the 2013/2014 season. Did you know you can purchase a meal plan with your unused financial aid? Well, you can!
Between Aug. 5 and Aug. 20, purchase a meal plan online and have it paid for with financial aid. Log in to the SWAN, click the ESSENTIALS tab, and locate the Financial Aid Meal Plan channel. Complete the information requested and select the meal plan and quantity. If your purchase is approved (based on available aid), your meal plan will be available for use within approximately one business day.

Clayton State Gospel Choir Meeting, Aug. 20
The Clayton State Gospel Choir, “Influence,” is more than a group of worshipers. Influence is a movement consisting of individuals who strive to spiritually guide and influence the campus of Clayton State University and surrounding communities through the ministry of song and exemplifying Christ-like living.
The interest meeting is open to anyone who is interested. It will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m. in room UC 272 of the James M. Baker University Center.

Service Learning Series Institute Kick Off, Aug. 24
The Department of Campus Life will kick off the Service Learning Series Institute on Saturday, Aug. 24, in the Student Activities Center Ballroom C, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The Service Learning Institute will introduce students to the concepts of service learning and help develop students’ commitment to public service and learning. There will be educational sessions on community service, civic engagement, social justice, and volunteerism. After the educational sessions, students will volunteer at pre-chosen local service projects that focus on a specific community need. By the end of the day, student participants will leave with a better understanding of community service, volunteerism, and civic engagement; how to connect with local community partners; and how to set up and track their volunteer service hours.

Volunteers will assist with opening game day youth footbal operations including chain crew and general park maintenance and upkeep.

Volunteers will assist with preparing the soil, plant seeds, weed, harvest produce and more. Volunteers will learn how to grow healthy produce and reduce food budgets while getting to know neighbors and instilling pride in the community.
· Morrow Library: Shhhh!!!
Volunteers will help with organizing and maintaining the book and periodical collections; re-shelving and categorizing books; and assist with other tasks as needed.
· Keep Forest Park Beautiful: Clean City = Happy City!!
Volunteers will spread out over a section of the Forest Park community to beautify the area and spread some smiles.
· Rainbow House: Be The Good!!
Volunteers will assist with facility maintenance, beautification projects and other tasks as needed.

Loch-In Leadership Institute – Applications Due, Aug. 30
LOCH-IN Leadership Institute is Campus Life’s premiere leadership development program. LOCH-IN is a comprehensive non-credit course designed to teach students the most formidable leadership skills for success in leadership on campus, in communities, and in career endeavors. It is designed for individuals interested in leadership development and personal growth. LOCH-IN consists of two classes per month and will run from Sept. 18 to Nov. 20, 2013.

The Diversity and Multicultural Conference is a dynamic and interactive one-day development opportunity that gives participants the essential knowledge and strategies needed to lead and function in a globally complex society. Class Attendance During First Two Weeks
Welcome to the fall semester at Clayton State University! As you know, weekday classes begin today, Monday, Aug. 12. We want you to have a successful start of the fall semester, and we know this is also important to you! Therefore, it is imperative that you attend class during the first week and no later than the second week of the semester. A registered student who does not attend at least one class session in each course by Thursday, Aug. 22 is a “no show.” If you are enrolled in an online course, the instructor will provide details on how online attendance will be verified.
Registration will be cancelled for any course in which a student is submitted to the Registrar’s Office as a “no show”. The “no show” student will not be charged tuition for the cancelled course. However, there may be serious financial aid consequences for students who are receiving financial aid, since this will reduce the number of enrolled credit hours. In the event you are reported as a no show, it will be extremely difficult to get reinstated in class as indicated in the policy. Please do not let this happen to you!

Emergency Alerts via Text Messaging from Public Safety
Welcome from the Department of Public Safety to all new students, faculty and staff, and welcome back to all those returning.
As a public service, the Department of Public Safety sends out emergency alert messages as needed through the use of outdoor sirens, emails, campus telephone system, and/or text messaging. Since text messaging is generally the most effective mode of communication, it is very important that all students, faculty and staff enter their cell numbers into the campus emergency alert network to receive these messages when sent out.
Note that your number has to personally entered. The information is not automatically extracted from your personal data. Here is the process that we encourage all to follow for first time entries or when you change your cell number or the carrier:
· Log into the SWAN at the University’s website
· Link on “My Tab” in tool bar.
· Scroll down to section titled ”Emergency Text Messages”
· Enter your cell number and the carrier (e.g. AT&T, Verizon, or other)
· Click on “Submit” and you’re done with this easy yet important process.

New Parking Permits
The parking permits/decals for the previous school year will expire on Wednesday July 31. New permits are currently available for pick up at the Department of Public Safety, with valid dates from Aug. 1, 2013 to July 31, 2014.
Faculty/staff will be issued the traditional blue colored permits. However, there are some changes to the student permits. Students living in Laker Hall will be issued gold colored permits and those living in Clayton Station will be issued green colored permits. All other students will be issued orange colored permits. However, student vehicles bearing any of these three colors may park in any areas designated for student parking.
Earn Course Credit with Student Media
It’s not too late to sign up to earn course credit for working on The Bent Tree, Clayton State internet Radio (CSiR), and Clayton State Television (CSTV).
The Visual and Performing Arts Department collaborates each semester with Clayton State’s Student Media Organizations to offer interested students the opportunity to earn credit for working with one of the three organizations. Starting for spring semester students can select from one of four "tracks"

This opportunity is open to any Clayton State University students and counts as an elective for most majors. Experience is not necessary, but encouraged. Course credit ranges from one to four hours.
Attendance at first meeting is MANDATORY. The meeting date and time will be determined. Syllabi for the class will be handed out at the first organizational meeting.
Meetings for the Student Media organizations have not yet been determined for spring.
JOUR 3011 is for students interested in newswriting and photography.
JOUR 3012 is for students interested in radio production, television production, and editing.

Student Government Association: Freshman Senator Seats
The Student Government Association (SGA) is made up of elected student representatives who work in an advisory capacity to the Division of Student Affairs and other administrative units to formulate legislation, actions, and policies that positively impact the student population of Clayton State University. The basic function of the SGA is to provide for the general welfare of the student body by providing a means of student input and opinion in the organization and operation of student affairs. The SGA shall work to facilitate communication between the students, faculty, and administration.
Applications will be available from Aug. 19 to Sept. 6 for all freshman who are interested in running for a senator seat. Applications can be downloaded from the SGA website on Aug. 19. http://www.clayton.edu/sga.
