9/11 Service Cinema Tonight
AmeriCorps and the Student African American Sisterhood present the Oscar award-winning documentary, “Twin Towers,” Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of Laker Hall.
The documentary depicts the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and follows the actions of two brothers; one a policeman and the other a fireman as they capture their actions during the attacks.
Following the film there will be a panel discussion made up of local serviceman.
A 9/11 Tribute from Chief Hamil
Today is the 12th anniversary of the most horrific attack on our nation since Pearl Harbor. On Sept. 11, 2001, more than 3,000 people died as a result of terrorist attacks on America through the hijacking of four commercial jetliners. Two were crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, one into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and the other reportedly was targeted for either the White House or the U.S. Capitol before it crashed into a field in rural Pennsylvania. The heroic actions of its passengers, who risked their own lives, prevented the potential loss of countless others.
The casualties of the attacks included more than 2,600 in New York City, 125 at the Pentagon, and 246 passengers on the four planes, plus the 19 hijackers. Among the casualties in New York alone were 341 FDNY firefighters and two paramedics, 23 NYPD officers and 37 Port Authority Police Department officers. Additionally, eight EMTs and paramedics from private emergency services were killed. A little known statistic is that more than 70 countries lost citizens in the attacks.
I hope that everyone will take a few moments of silence today to honor all those whose lives were cut short 12 years ago as a result of the terrorist attacks. Also, keep the families of the victims in your thoughts and prayers. Many children lost parents, many husbands and wives lost their spouses, and many others lost close friends, relatives, and coworkers.
Additionally, we all have busy schedules, but please take some time to cherish your own relationship with family and friends, and if you have the opportunity, say “thank you” to a police officer, firefighter, EMT, or member of our armed services for keeping us safe and ensuring that our Constitutional freedoms are protected. They will appreciate it.
We will never forget the terrorist attacks of 9/11... nor should we.

Clayton State Testing Center Relocating to Clayton State – East
The Clayton State University Testing Center, which provides standardized college-related testing for both Clayton State students and the general public, will be relocating to Arbor Hall at Clayton State – East during the next two weeks.
Testing Center Director Sharon Long and her professional staff, Lolita Lighting and Donna Taffar, will be closing their current location on the first floor of the Clayton State Library on Thursday, Sept. 12, and moving to room 121 of Arbor Hall at Clayton State – East, 5823 Trammell Rd., starting on Friday, Sept. 13. The move will take until Friday, Sept. 27, and the Testing Center will re-open in Arbor Hall on Monday, Sept. 30.
The Testing Center’s services include college entrance exams, placement exams, exit testing, and program-specific entrance tests. Services also include independent study (distance learning) exams, the TOEFL, and other program testing.
In between Sept. 13 and Sept. 30, the Testing Center will be considered closed, however, according to Long, they hope to answer phones or at least return phone calls as much as possible after the phones are reconnected. Clayton State University September Service Learning Series, Sept. 18, Sept. 21
The Clayton State University Department of Campus Life will host its monthly Service Learning Series on Wednesday, Sept. 18 and Saturday, Sept. 21. This month’s discussion and service project will focus on literacy.
On Sept. 18, Dr. Amy Sanford and Dr. Mary Cynthia Thompson, assistant professors of English and Reading Education, will facilitate a discussion on the history of literacy, how literacy empowers individuals and communities and strategies and resources that will build and improve literacy. Bring your lunch and join us in room B12 of the Lecture Hall from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Service Learning Discussion is free and open to all students, faculty and staff.
On Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon, Clayton State students will volunteer at the Books for Africa Warehouse in Smyrna. This volunteer opportunity is limited to 20 participants. Transportation will be provided for the first 10 who request it. Participants willing to carpool are greatly appreciated. Take the QEP Title Survey, Through Sept. 15
Clayton State University is in the process of creating a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) as part of our preparations for our SACS accreditation reaffirmation in 2014 (you can read more about this at http://www.clayton.edu/sacs).
What is our QEP going to be?
A QEP is a description of how we (as a University) will be improving some aspect of student learning over a five year (and longer) span; and, for our plan we will be exploring community engagement and its impact on student learning. The focus of our QEP is on student engagement through community projects that enhance learning and foster real-world success. We will be incorporating community engagement into our courses in a more deliberate and widespread way, using teaching and learning strategies that will integrate meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.
These will be projects of various sizes that will be directly linked to course content and objectives, in which students will have an opportunity to apply what they are learning in a way to benefit a local community group or organization. How can I help?
We need your input as a member of our University community, by participating in a survey that is seeking your feedback on what we should call our QEP. There are some proposed titles, and a space for you to suggest other possibilities.
This is just one of the many opportunities that you’ll have to get involved in changes to our curriculum across the University, and we value your input greatly. We also will be creating some important committees and advisory bodies as we develop our QEP and begin to implement it in the near future. However, to make this work well we need input from all parts of our campus community (students, staff, faculty, and community members).
The survey should be relatively quick to complete, and is completely anonymous. At the end of the survey, you will be asked if you would like to work with us on one of these committees, or if you know someone who might want to be part of this work..

SBDC Schedules Workshops in McDonough (Sept. 17) and Morrow (Sept. 26)
The Clayton State University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) next two workshops are scheduled to be held at the Henry County Chamber of Commerce in McDonough, and Clayton State – East in Morrow.
SBDC’s popular Starting a Business Workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 17, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Henry County Chamber of Commerce, 1709 Georgia Hwy. 20 West, McDonough.
SBDC is also offering a marketing class/workshop on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to noon at Clayton State – East, 5823 Trammell Rd., Morrow. “Finding & Refining Competitive Advantage” will be held in room 115 of Arbor Hall at Clayton State – East. This workshop is designed to help attendees find, measure, and use their competitive advantage to market their products or services. The cost is $49 per person.

Weather Channel VP to Visit Management Principles and Organization Behavior Class, Sept. 18
Matthew Harrison, the vice president of Talent Management for the Weather Company (commonly known as the Weather Channel) will visit Dr. Leon Prieto’s “Management Principles and Organization Behavior” class on Wednesday, Sept. 18. The class is from 10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. in the Arts and Sciences building, room G229. Interested faculty and staff are invited to attend.
Information Sessions on Revisions to the Contracts Review Process, Sept. 18
As of July 1, 2013, the Georgia legislature enacted statutory changes to the process for entering contracts with public employers. There is now a requirement that, prior to entering contracts for labor or services using either a bidding process or when the contract amount exceeds $2,499.99 in value, contractors (and subcontractors) must submit signed and notarized affidavits which either attest to their compliance with the terms of the Federal Work Authorization Program, or state a specific exemption from this requirement.
Although informative documents are available for review at the Business and Operations website,www.clayton.edu/contract-administration, University officials will host information sessions on the following dates, times and locations to further educate the campus community. Those faculty and staff who are either occasionally or frequently involved in the contract review process are strongly encouraged to attend. Furniture Expo, Sept. 19, Furniture Policies Training, Sept. 23
Facilities Management, in collaboration with Procurement, is organizing a Furniture Expo on Thursday, Sept. 19, from noon to 3 p.m. in the Atrium and room 101 of the Harry S. Downs Center.
The exposition will showcase various lines of furniture products and furniture manufacturer on state contract. Campus clients will have the opportunity to interact with various manufacturers, who will demonstrate their products.
There are more than 20 manufacturers that have confirmed that they will be represented at the Expo, making this a great opportunity for both manufacturers and clients. There will be lot of giveaways and food at the event. Bring your business card for giveaway drawings.
Facilities Management, in collaboration with Procurement, will also be organizing Furniture Policies and Procedures training on Monday, Sept. 23 in the Downs Center, in room 101. There will be two sessions, at 10 a.m. and at 2 p.m. Come to learn the new policies and procedures for furniture purchase.
Tips and Resources for Effectively Supporting the Success of Student Veterans Transitioning from Military Life to Campus Life, Sept. 20
The Clayton State Veterans Resource Center will present a faculty and staff professional development opportunity, “Tips and Resources for Effectively Supporting the Success of Student Veterans Transitioning from Military Life to Campus Life” on Friday, Sept. 20 from noon to 1 p.m. in room UC 322 of the James M. Baker University Center. Lunch will be provided for the participants.
Presenters will come from the Veterans Resource Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, and the Disability Resource Center in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs Transition Team.
This is a chance to gain a better understanding of the unique needs of student veterans and the resources available to assist in their college success.

Faculty and Staff Safe Space Training, Sept. 20
Safe Space is a national program designed to provide a supportive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) members of the campus community; increase the visible presence of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) allies and places that are “safe” for LGBT students across campus; and dismiss negative stereotypes and present accurate information about the LGBT population. Individuals who have completed the Safe Space Training may post the Safe Space symbol at their offices, backpacks, or binders as a way to designate themselves as safe allies for LGBT students, colleagues and friends.
Since the inception of the Safe Space Training program at Clayton State in 2008, more than 150 individuals have participated in the program. Given the growth of our LGBT community at Clayton State, we would like to increase the number of visible allies to improve the chances of this population excelling academically, socially, and professionally at the University.
The Faculty and Staff training will be held on Friday, September 20, 2013, from 10 a.m. to noon, in the SAC Ballroom A.

Clayton State Announces a New Scholarship Initiative; “Dream Makers”
As a means of addressing the ongoing challenge of students being stretched by increasing educational costs and the need to “make ends meet,” Clayton State University has announced a new scholarship initiative, “Dream Makers.”
Dream Makers is a multi-faceted approach to helping those students who are either high achievers, are close to completing their degree, or both. Three separate initiatives will be a part of the Dream Makers program; Dream Makers Scholarships, the Loch Leaders Investment Fund, and Laker Completion Grants.
Dream Maker Scholarships will carry the name of the donors and will have broad selection criteria established by the individual donor. Each scholarship will be given to one student.
The Loch Leaders Investment Fund will recognize high achievers – those full-time students with a GPA of 3.5 or greater who demonstrate unmet need. A select group of students will be designated as Loch Leaders each year with priority given in order to: continuing students; new freshmen; returning students; and transfer students.
Many Clayton State students are the first in their family to attend college. Completing their coursework and receiving their degree is a significant accomplishment that can be postponed due to family situations, work demands, and, very often, financial challenges. The Laker Completion Grants will impact those students who are near degree completion and demonstrate unmet need. Priority will be given to those closest to degree completion with unmet need and a GPA of at least 2.5.

Building Naming Committee Recommends New Names for Athletics & Fitness and Student Center
The Clayton State Building Naming Committee: Chair Cindy Lauer; Kelly Adams; Dolores Cox; Mike Mead; Nicole Harris; Jim Braun; R.B. Rosenburg has recommended name changes for the Athletics & Fitness Center and the Student Center. New signage for both of these buildings is in the works.
The Student Center will now be called Edgewater Hall, and the Athletics & Fitness Center will now be called the Athletics Center. The committee also recommended that the Student Activities Center keep its current name.
“The committee was a composed of individuals from all areas of campus and they understood the need to find names that would clearly distinguish the names of several buildings on campus,” notes Vice President of Business and Operations Corlis Cummings. “I hope that everyone appreciates their work as much as I have.”
2013 Required Employee Training
It’s that time of the year for all faculty and staff to complete training required by Clayton State University, Board of Regents, and the State of Georgia.
The Right to Know (RTK), Ethics, Security Awareness, Campus Vehicle Use and Sexually Harassment courses must all be completed on an annual basis. During this time period, we ask that you also take a moment to review the updated Clayton State University Employee Handbook and complete a new Employee Handbook Acknowledgement Form. The signed Acknowledgement Form and five required courses should be completed by Dec. 1, 2013.
Here are the instructions to access and complete these trainings:
· Use your current Clayton State University user name and password to log into Employee Training.
· Review the Employee Handbook – Complete the Employee Acknowledgement Form and forward to HR.
· Required Trainings

Clayton Station Security
From 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. only the main entrance to Clayton Station, which is adjacent to the clubhouse, will be accessible for vehicle entrance and exit. The other three entrances will be secured with temporary roadblocks.
These extra security measures will be in place only on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. During other times and days, all access points will be open for public use. These temporary changes are being implemented to assess the need and locations for any additional permanent security enhancement to Clayton Station.

Facilities Advisory Committee Requests – Fall 2013
It is the time of the year when Facilities Advisory Committee is calling for requests for facilities’ modifications. The Modification/Space Request Form is located on the Facilities Management web page at http://www.clayton.edu/facilities/planningdesign/facilitiescommittee.The completed form should be submitted to the appropriate vice president for signature and transmitted to the committee by Sept. 20, 2013.
For new people on campus we would like to give a brief overview of Facilities Committee tasks. The Facilities Advisory Committee provides input and makes recommendations for new facilities or space needs and modifications to existing spaces, as well as dealing with facilities-related issues and long-term planning. Requests are reviewed at semi-annual Facilities Advisory Committee meetings in October and April.
Not all requests will lead to PowerPoint presentations before the committee. Vice Presidents will be notified by Sept. 25 whether they will need to submit presentations. Presentation submittals are due on Oct. 11, 2013. Presentations to the Facilities Committee will be conducted the week of Oct. 21 by those confirmed by the committee.
Please be advised that currently the availability of space is very limited. Facilities Modification/ Space Request form has been adjusted for you to justify your request with reference to the Space Utilization report. This adjustment is due to recently received Space Utilization Study report conducted by the Board of Regents, showing various campuses’ space utilization metrics. In particular, Clayton State University features excess of conference and meeting spaces. It is getting more difficult to justify new space without showing compelling needs that are aligned with institution’s strategic plan and any other documentation that clearly and objectively supports the needs.
