New Times for “Created Equal” Screenings
Please join the Clayton State Library for a screening of the film Slavery by Another Name in advance of our next event in the Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle discussion series on Apr. 16, 2014.
All screenings will be held in room UC 272 in the James Baker University Center. Dates and times of the screenings (there are a couple of changes from the last schedule) are as follows:

A student’s authorization to enroll in courses at Clayton State University is conditional upon acceptance of all terms and conditions set forth in the Registration Agreement. Students must agree to the mandatory terms and conditions when they enter the registration system, and only then they will be permitted to proceed to registration. Students who do not accept the terms and conditions of the Registration Agreement will not be permitted to register in courses at Clayton State University.

The Clayton State University Dental Hygiene students, staff and faculty are honored to host a presentation by 2014 American Dental Hygienists’ Association President Dr. Denise Bowers on Wednesday, Mar. 26 at 2:30 p.m., in room 102 of Arbor Hall at Clayton State – East.
In her “spare time” President Bowers is chair of the dental hygiene program at Rhodes State College in Lima, Oh., and former president of the Ohio Dental Hygienists’ Association. If your schedule allows, we invite you to join us!
Everyone Can Eat Healthy, Mar. 26
In honor of National Nutrition Month, Organizing Women for Lifelong Success (OWLS) and the Nontraditional Student Organization (NTSO) present a Wellness Wednesday's Workshop featuring life chef, writer, and culinary educator chef Asata Reid on Wednesday, Mar. 26, in room UC265 of the James M. Baker University Center, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.
Reid will focus on the four areas that are most often cited as to why people don't eat healthy; it's expensive, it's complicated, it doesn't taste good, and it takes too much effort. She will bust all four myths with easy meal planning, rethinking your shopping list, and other tips that really make eating healthy easy, affordable and fun!
Partnering Academics and Community Engagement; SACSCOC Visit, Mar. 26
As part of our reaffirmation of accreditation with SACSCOC, we are required to develop a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). After input from Clayton State students, faculty and staff as well the broader community, we have selected Community Engagement as our QEP.
Students will begin to see more community engagement projects included in your classes. These projects are designed to help you connect the course content with issues and projects that are taking place in the community.
Faculty members will be given opportunities for support to redesign your classes to include community engagement projects that are connected to the curriculum.
Staff members will be given opportunities to partner with faculty and students as they engage in community-based projects.

AmeriCorps Service Cinema, Mar. 27
Join AmeriCorps and the Sigma Sigma Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., for an AmeriCorps Service Cinema, Thursday, Mar. 27, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., in the James M. Baker University Center, room 272.
The AmeriCorps Service Cinema Series raises social awareness by providing a safe and interactive forum for students to engage in intensive and intentional dialogue about diverse social issues through the use of film and expert guest panelists. For the month of March we are focusing on the issue of human trafficking and more specifically child sex trafficking. This specific service cinema is titled The Candy Shop: Where Everything is not Sweet.
According to a recent report by CBS Atlanta, Atlanta is the largest hub for human trafficking in the country. Georgia's State Attorney General Samuel Olens calls human trafficking a brutal, complex and widespread crime. Olens says vulnerable people, often children, are sold and forced to have sex against their will. In Georgia, we know there's a range from 200-300 girls that are trafficked each month in Atlanta. And tonight there will be 100 girls that will be exploited in metro Atlanta.
University Health Services Open House, Mar. 27
Students, faculty and staff are invited to join University Health Services for their Open House on Thursday, Mar. 27, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in 1000 Building of Clayton Station.
A welcome and ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 2 p.m., and light refreshments will be served, along with a welcome gift for all attendees.
There will also be special gifts for students, including two drawings for $50 in LakerBucks and games with prizes.
Student Academic Conference Keynote Speaker David Lowery, Mar. 28
Clayton State University and the 2013–2014 Academic Conference Committee is honored to welcome David Lowery as the 2014 Student Academic Conference keynote speaker. The address will be held at noon in room UC 272 of the James M. Baker University Center on Friday, Mar. 28.
Lowery received a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1984. During his time in Santa Cruz, he founded the critically acclaimed ensemble Camper Van Beethoven and associated record label Pitch-a-Tent Records, helping jump-start the Indie Rock movement. In 1991, he moved on to the ensemble Cracker, which produced five top ten alternative/rock radio tracks and three platinum albums.
Lowery also produced a variety of albums for bands such as Counting Crows and Sparklehorse, and went on to found the Sound of Music Studios with John Morand. This studio, which recorded tracks for a wide range of artists from D’angelo to Lamb of God, later spun off Shockoe Noise LLC, which specialized in custom music for commercials, film, and TV.
In 2007, he was appointed as an advisor to the collective action website www.ThePoint.com which evolved into the social deals site www.Groupon.com.
In 2011, Lowery began teaching the economics and finance of the music business at the University of Georgia.
Recently, Lowery has been writing for www.thetrichordist.com. This blog examines Artists Rights in the digital age. He has become an outspoken critic of Silicon Valley and its aggressive attacks on artists and other content creators. He has testified to congress twice on behalf of artists.

Southern Regional Spring Into Healthy Living, Mar. 29
Southern Regional Health System will be holding its free community health expo, the Eighth Annual Spring Into Healthy Living, on Saturday, Mar. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Morrow Center at Southlake Mall.
Spring Into Healthy Living includes; health screenings, a physician Q&A session, access to the health exhibitor fair, and adult and pediatric EKGs.
Teacher Education Speaker Series, Mar. 31
The Clayton State University Department of Teacher Education Speaker Series continues this month with a visit from the 2013 Georgia State Teacher of the Year, Jemelleh Coes.
A Special Education English Language Arts and Reading teacher from Langston Chapel Middle School in Statesboro, Ga., Coes will be speaking on Monday, Mar. 31, from 5 p.m. to 7 .p.m. in room UC272 of the James M. Baker University Center.
Get Up & Get Fit Video Contest, Deadline Extended to Mar. 31
Calling all Clayton State campus departments! Take a break from work and create a video of your staff showing how they Get Up & Get Fit throughout the workday.
Each participating department will make a video (90 seconds max) of its staff taking a break from the work day to engage in any form of exercise or physical activity (dancing, jogging, yoga, push-ups, etc.). The videos should be creative and inspire others to get up throughout the day and get fit.
Due to the obnoxious weather recently, the Get Fit Video submission deadline is extended to Monday, Mar. 31 at noon. Submit videos for the Get Up & Get Fit Incentive program to Lisa Williamson at firstname.lastname@example.org. The winning department will have its video posted to the Wellness Council Facebook page and departmental employees will receive free fitness and wellness assessments from Recreation & Wellness.
A Music Showcase, Apr. 2
CMEA, NAfME Student Chapter and the Clayton State Department of Visual and Performing Arts present a Music Showcase, featuring Clayton State music students and the Clayton State Jazz Combo, Wednesday, Apr. 2, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Eugene Lawson Amphitheater. Admission is free.
Spivey Hall to Welcome Classical Guitarist David Russell, Apr. 4, Apr. 5
David Russell, a world-renowned classical guitarist known for his superb musicianship and inspired artistry, will be welcomed by Clayton State University’s Spivey Hall on Friday, Apr. 4 and Saturday, Apr. 5.
On Apr. 4, at 7:30 p.m., Russell will hold a Guitar Master Class in Spivey Hall. He then can be heard in concert on Apr. 5, at 8:15 p.m. For tickets to his concert, call the Spivey Hall Box Office at (678) 466-4200 or visit www.spiveyhall.org. Tickets for the concert are $40. Clayton State University faculty and staff tickets are 50 percent off (limit two tickets per Laker ID); Clayton State students pay just $10 (limit two tickets per Laker ID).
Russell’s residency at Spivey Hall is funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Georgia Council for the Arts.
Russell has earned the highest praise from audiences and critics alike, including the 2005 Grammy award in the category of best instrumental soloist in classical music for his CD Aire Latino. In recognition of his talent and his international career, he was named a Fellow of The Royal Academy of Music in London in 1997. During his studies at the Royal Academy, he twice won the Julian Bream Guitar Prize. Later he won numerous international competitions, including the Andrés Segovia Competition, the José Ramírez Competition and Spain’s prestigious Francisco Tárrega Competition.
Since 1995 Russell has an exclusive recording contract with Telarc International, with which he has recorded 16 CDs. He currently spends his time touring the world, appearing regularly at prestigious halls in main cities such as New York, London, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Madrid, Toronto or Rome.
The New York Times wrote about his performance: "… Mr. Russell made his mastery evident without ever deviating from an approach that places musical values above mere display. It was apparent to the audience throughout the recital that Mr. Russell possesses a talent of extraordinary dimension."
Clayton State to Host Workshop in Corporate Communication Design and Management, Apr. 7
The Corporate Communication program at Clayton State, in conjunction with the TRUST Student Corporate Communication Agency will host a workshop in advertising design and agency management on the Morrow campus on Monday, Apr. 7. Special guest speakers at the event include two leaders in the industry who have a wealth of international experience in graphic design, digital arts and management.
Anna Terry has been working in the visual communications industry as an arts educator and graphic designer for more than 25 years. She is the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence at Southern Poly, where she also lectures in New Media Arts, Design, Drawing and Art Appreciation. Terry has worked and taught in New Zealand, China and Colombia.
Don Hunter is an educator, artist and manager who has worked, studied and taught in New Zealand and The Netherlands. Hunter taught Sculptural Design, Observational Drawing, and has spent much of his career directing an international arts logistics company. He has also worked in local government as an arts advocate, working in urban design teams. Terry and Hunter are collaborating in authoring a book on “Creative Process.”
The workshop will take place on Apr. 7, from 12:45 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the James M. Baker University Center, room 265.
The workshop is being sponsored by the Communication and Media Studies program of the Visual and Performing Arts Department at Clayton State University, in conjunction with the recently founded TRUST Student Communication Agency.
“This is a terrific opportunity for students at Clayton State who have any interest in the persuasion industries or in art and design,” notes Assistant Professor Dr. Susan McFarlane-Alvarez, who teaches Corporate Communication and advises students of TRUST. “The workshop by Anna and Don promises to guide our student practitioners in the realities of corporate design and how to manage creative resources and ideas toward meeting strategic objectives.”

CIMS Student Awards Ceremony, Apr. 11
On Friday, Apr.11, the College of Information and Mathematical Sciences (CIMS) will host the Ninth Annual Student Awards Ceremony in the James Baker University Center Commons to honor CIMS students who have excelled academically.
Computer Science (CS), and Information Technology (IT) majors will receive awards in several categories: IT Experiential Learning Student of the Year, IT Outstanding Scholars Award, CS Outstanding Scholar Award, and the CIMS Chancellor's Academic Recognition Award. Several awards are available for Mathematics majors: the Rising Senior Awards, the Annita Hunt Award, and the Billie R. Nail Award and Scholarship.
The highest honor bestowed by CIMS is the Catherine Cowan Aust Award, presented to the "best all-around CIMS major." Dean's List students in all majors and Math Club, ACM, and Wi^2STEM officers will be recognized as well.
The CIMS Student Awards Committee would like to remind the Clayton State University faculty members and students that the Student Awards Ceremony is an invitation only event.

35th Annual Sickle Cell Road Race/Walk, Apr. 12
The 35th Annual Sickle Cell Road Race/Walk will be held on Saturday, Apr. 12, starting at 9 a.m. at Welcome All Park in College Park.
Hosted by South Fulton Running Partners, the 7K (that’s right, it’s a 7K, or approximately 4.35 miles) is the RRCA State Championship and will also include a 4K (just under 2.5 miles – they must like odd distances) walk and a race expo on Friday, Apr. 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Runners can use their times for placement in the 2014 Peachtree Road Race.

Clayton State Campus Mediation Tournament, Apr. 25
Mediation is a negotiation process in which the disputing parties are assisted by a neutral third-party — a mediator.
In fall of 2013, Clayton State University students won first place at the 2013 International Intercollegiate Mediation Tournament.

Tickets for the Vagina Monologues are Now on Sale
Tickets for Clayton State University’s 2014 performance of “The Vagina Monologues” will be on sale beginning this week through Apr. 11.
You may purchase your tickets on Main Street in the James M. Baker University Center for the one time performance on Apr. 12, at 2 p.m. in the Student Activities Center Ballroom.
This performance promises to make you laugh, cry and learn something you didn’t know about vaginas. Tickets for all Clayton State affiliates are $5, tickets for the general public are $10. All proceeds will be donated to Southern Crescent Sexual Assault Center.
Survey on Evening/Weekend Support by the HUB, CID and M&PS
The ITC subcommittee has recently developed a survey to gather the faculty, staff and students’ thoughts on evening and weekend technical support for the Hub, the Center for Instructional Development, and Academic Technology/Media and Print Services and we would like to engage as many faculty, staff, and students as possible.
This survey will help us determine the need and options for evening and weekend support. Please forward the following link to your faculty and staff and encourage them to complete the survey.

Staff Council’s New Email Address

Staff Professional Development Funds
The funds are shrinking fast. As a friendly reminder when submitting a request, please include the Staff Professional Development Authorization form, a Travel Authorization form and all supporting documents (registration form, agenda, event information, etc.). Center for Continuing Education Offering English as a Second Language Classes
The Center for Continuing Education at Clayton State University will be offering English as a Second Language (ESOL) classes at the Center for Continuing Education in Morrow beginning in April 2014.
Information Sessions and Assessments for the ESL classes will be held at the Harry S. Downs Center on the Clayton State main campus on Monday, Apr. 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and on Wednesday, Apr. 16, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the CSU East location.
Students need only to attend one of the Information Session. Classes will begin the week of Apr.28.

¨ Mar. 10, 2014 Complex services and/or goods, conducted by use of an RFP and/or construction contracts. These requests must be received by DOAS by Mar. 14, 2014.
¨ Apr. 18, 2014 Request for Quotes (RFQ) agency contracts, open market/one time purchases.
¨ May 2, 2014 Request for renewal or extension of current contracts.

¨ Apr. 30, 2014 Last bid opening date for FY 2014 purchases.
Purchase Requisitions Submitted to Procurement Services:
¨ May 9, 2014 All purchases requiring a purchase order. Any purchases requested after this date must be approved by Budget & Finance.
P-Card Cutoff Dates:
¨ May 5, 2014 Last day to use the P-card so the purchases will be posted to the May 2014 Visa statement (received in June). Any purchases on future statements will be charged to Fiscal Year 2015.
Budget Amendment Requests:
¨ May 9, 2014 All budget amendments for FY 2014 submitted to Scott McElroy.
Check Request and Travel Reimbursement Deadlines:
¨ June 2, 2014 Last day the Travel and Expense module will be available for reimbursement requests for FY 2014.
¨ May 2, 2014 Last day to submit all check requests with appropriate documentation for FY 2014 for funds 10000, 10500 and 10600.
¨ June 13, 2014 Last day to submit a request to transfer costs between E & G and Sponsored.
