Retirement Reception for Sandy Haught
Former Smith Award winner Sandy Haught is retiring, and the Facilities Management office is throwing her a retirement reception on Wednesday, June 13, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., in the conference room of the Facilities Management Building. All are welcome to attend to wish her well.
Marketing Class Holding a Fiesta on Campus
Dr. Beverly Wright’s marketing class is hosting a fiesta on campus in conjunction with the Clayton State Marketing Association and Gordo’s Cheese Dip. Gordo’s is a family-owned and operated company based in Lake City, Ga., that Wright’s class is doing a marketing project for during the summer semester, attempting to increase awareness of Gordo's on campus and in the community.
The event, “Fiesta at the Lake,” will be held on Wednesday, June 13, from noon to 3 p.m. in the commons area of the James M. Baker University Center, and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the café in the lobby of the Student Activities Center. There will be prizes, free drinks and plenty of queso.
Gordo’s was founded by Charlie Sweat in 1973 to serve the rapidly growing Mexican food industry.
Wii Wednesdays at The Loch Shop
The Loch Shop will be holding Wii Wednesdays from June 13 through July 25 in The Loch Shop’s lounge, starting at noon and ending at 3 p.m.
Come relieve some test stress every Wednesday in June and July (except July 4). Play your favorite Wii games – bowling, Mario Kart, basketball three point contest, the Michael Jackson Experience and more. Win prizes just for participating, enjoy free snacks, plus, play for the top score and qualify to enter the June 27 and July 25 prize drawings!
Day of Action Volunteers Needed, June 21
Ann Cramer, director for IBM Corporate Citizenship & Corporate Affairs for the Americas, and a commencement speaker at Clayton State’s May 2011 ceremony, has invited Clayton State faculty, staff and students to participate in the upcoming Day of Action on Thursday, June 21. This is a national strategic effort on the longest day of the year to advance the common good. More than 74,000 individuals participated nationwide last year.
Cramer, a past chair of the United Way Board of Directors, notes that, to celebrate United Way's 125th anniversary, there are created 125 volunteer opportunities in conjunction with the Day of Action. The activities range from a scheduled project at a local nonprofit, to something on your own for a neighbor or an activity at the office with your co-workers. A few of the options include:
- Create a home away from home by donating bedding for children receiving treatment
- Help your local library prepare for reading programs
- Paint line games in children's centers
- Host a clothing drive at work & donate items to a local nonprofit

Top 100 Workplaces -- Thanks and Follow-up
As has been shared previously with the campus community, Clayton State University was identified by the Atlanta Journal Constitution
as one of Metropolitan Atlanta’s top 100 workplaces. This came from survey data provided by respondents on our campus, and evaluated by Workplace Dynamics LLP, an independent survey group.
First, I begin by saying thanks. Thanks for all you do to support learning here at Clayton State every day. Whatever it is we are able to accomplish in the learning of our students, our faculty, our staff, and our community, we accomplish as a community of colleagues. To make that thanks more concrete, we have asked a group of colleagues to plan a “thank you” celebration late summer/early fall. That group will include the following; Shannon Thomas, Natasha Hutson, Nikki Finlay, Betty Lane, John Brooks, Michelle Ellis, Marcia Bouyea-Hamlet, Tracy Gregg, Quandra Wright, Heidi Benford. The committee will be meeting in the near future and will develop proposals for our celebration.
Second, I want to share some information generated by the survey work. At the President’s web site (under periodic communications) you can find both a summary report and a list of comments from respondents, http://www.clayton.edu/president/communications
. This is exactly the kind of information that helps an organization improve when it is seen as an opportunity to review our activities. We are, of course, heartened by reports of approval of our directions as an institution, and reactions indicated that large numbers of our colleagues report they are appreciated and they are part of something meaningful.
As importantly, we are attentive to comments that guide us toward making the university a better place to foster learning. And none of these are surprising to many of us, even as we seek to make improvements. My own summary of the responses for improvement comes in two broad categories.
First, we must continue to seek more resources to support our work. That the institution earmarked some 10% of new university funds to staff and faculty salary adjustments indicates that we already recognize this as an issue -- but we understand that we must continue to try to do more. It is also the case that resource limits were seen as a frustration not only about compensation, but about additional faculty and staff to help better support student learning.
Second, we must continue to find better ways to communicate with each other on campus. And at least some of the ways in which communication can be improved will come from a continued emphasis on campus collaboration. As one respondent observed, we can make improvements in these ways from “…top to bottom and from left to right.” And a part of that would include ways to improve communication with supervisors about ways to encourage or foster open lines of communication. This could increase the comfort associated with recommendations for work place modifications. As collaboration and communication play such an important part of our leadership strategy, we will be working to continue to find ways to improve campus performances in this area.
Once again, I express my thanks to each of you for your work to support learning on our campus. This is one bit of evidence indicating progress toward meeting Strategic Goal E, Action step III, “Create a supportive work environment that encourages input and collaboration that enables faculty and staff to optimize their personal and professional development.” I wish each of you a summer in which you can hopefully find some time to rest and refocus for the next academic year.

Clayton County Rotary Club Looking for Speakers

Undergraduate Student Assistant Funding Initiative
The Planning and Budget Council has again allocated $150,000 for the Undergraduate Student Assistant Funding Initiative. This initiative is one of many University retention efforts.
Departments or divisions interested in receiving some of these funds must submit a Request Form to Scott McElroy by June 15. Departments that received funding through this initiative previously must submit a 2012/2013 Request Form and will not automatically have their funding renewed.
Forms and Guidelines will be sent electronically to each department on May 25. Additional Forms and Guidelines may be obtained from Scott McElroy.
Budget Cut Off Date, June 15

Bursar’s Office Year-End Cutoff
The 2012 fiscal year-end is fast approaching, and Clayton State is required by the USG Board of Regents to freeze the Banner System tables on June 30, 2012. All departmental deposits are due to the Bursar’s office by 5 p.m., on Thursday, June 28, 2012.
Any deposits received after June 28, 2012 will post to fiscal year 2013.

The Loch Shop’s very own Linda Campbell plans to retire on June 30, 2012. Auxiliary Services will have a retirement celebration for Campbell on Thursday, June 14, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., in the Loch Shop.
Alumni Association Monday Mixer, June 18
Clayton State alumni and friends, mark your calendar … the Alumni Association will be hosting a fun, social networking event for you.
The Alumni Association will be sponsoring a "Monday Mixer" on Monday, June 18 at 6:30 p.m., at the Skyboxx Restaurant and Bar in Morrow.
The Mixers are casual, free from admission (you just pay for what you order), and without agenda. In other words, come enjoy yourself, bring a friend, relax and network with other alumni and friends of Clayton State.
Over the next few months, the Alumni Association is hoping to congregate at restaurants with open porches or decks (weather permitting) – the perfect setting for food and friends, with the laid back, enjoy yourself atmosphere that make Mondays seem a little easier to get through!

A free Small Business Financing Workshop will be sponsored by the Clayton State University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and the Clayton County Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, June 19, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Harry S. Downs Center.

National Archives at Atlanta Welcomes Author of Book Tracing Story of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Ancestors, June 26
The National Archives at Atlanta, in partnership with Clayton County, is proud to welcome Rachel L. Swarns for a program on her new book “American Tapestry: The Story of the Black, White and Multiracial Ancestors of Michelle Obama,” on Tuesday, June 26, at 6:30 p.m.
Beginning in the 1800s, the book tells the captivating story of Obama’s ancestors and their five-generation journey from slavery to the most prominent position in our nation. First Lady Obama’s great, great, great grandmother, Melvinia Shields, was a slave on a farm in what is now Clayton County. As a teenage girl, she ultimately give birth to mixed race children, the first born of which was to become Obama’s great, great grandfather, Dolphus Shields.

Spivey Hall Kodály Teacher Training Workshops, July 16 to July 20
Spivey Hall will once again be making a significant contribution to music education with its annual Kodály Teacher Training Workshops, to be held Monday, July 16 to Friday, July 20, in Spivey Hall.
The two workshops, one offering an introduction to Kodály, and the other a Kodály refresher, will be taught by one of America's leading Kodály experts and a top clinician in the field — Dr. Jill Trinka. The workshops are designed for music teachers and college students who are interested in teaching music students (and college students get a discount).
The Kodály Concept is a comprehensive, sequential program that integrates the best ideas, techniques, and approaches to music education universally proven to be successful. The program builds musicianship through the singing of folk songs, classical music, and other quality materials.
The cost for the “Intro to Kodály” workshop, which will run from July 16 to July 18, is $180 ($50 for currently enrolled college students). Workshop participants will learn the basics of Kodály-based music curriculum essentials for grades K-5, gaining valuable tools and techniques that can be put to use in the classroom.
The “Kodály Refresher” workshop, which will run from July 18 to July 20, is $180, and $50 for currently enrolled college students. Individuals already familiar with Kodály, can take this refresher course which will explore pedagogy and process in depth. Attendees will also learn to write meaningful lesson plans, create smooth transitions, and expand their knowledge of literature.

Seventh Annual New Student Convocation Scheduled for Aug. 10
Clayton State University’s Seventh Annual New Student Convocation is scheduled to take place on Friday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Spivey Hall.
This year’s keynote address will be provided by Clayton State President Dr. Thomas J. Hynes. The ceremony’s purpose is to inspire, motivate and formally welcome new students into the university community.
Clayton State faculty and staff who participate in the procession portion of the ceremony are kindly requested to wear their academic regalia. Last year’s ceremony had its largest attendance for new students, faculty and staff.

Clayton State to Hold Annual Alumni Dinner at Turner Field’s 755 Club, Sept. 22
The Clayton State University Alumni Association will look to hit a grand slam once again at its 20th
Annual Alumni Dinner.
Next fall, the Alumni Association will hold its annual event at the 755 Club located at Turner Field. The Annual Dinner will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22. All Clayton State alumni, faculty/staff, students and friends of the University are invited to the event.
“We are so excited about having the opportunity to have our dinner at the 755 Club this year” says Alumni Association President Ben Hopkins. “We’ve had our annual event at some wonderful venues all over Atlanta and this will be another special night for alumni and friends.”
The dinner portion of the event will begin at 7 p.m., preceded by a reception; starting at 6:15 p.m. Attendees will also have the opportunity to take a special tour of Turner Field, which includes a behind-the-scenes look in the Atlanta Braves clubhouse.
In conjunction with the dinner, the Alumni Association will also recognize its 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award winners and hold a benefit auction.
