Basketball Doubleheaders, Jan. 3, Jan. 5
Both Laker basketball teams will return to action this week with a pair of Peach Belt Conference doubleheaders.
On Thursday, Jan. 3 (5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.) the Lakers will take on Armstrong Atlantic. On Saturday, Jan. 5 (1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.) the opponent will be Flagler. The fourth-ranked and undefeated (9-0) Laker women will open both sets of games, followed by the Laker men.
Procurement Services Promises Purchasing Power Plus!
Great things are happening in Procurement Services!
The Clayton State Office of Procurement Services is preparing to enhance purchasing power throughout the campus. Look an announcement later this month in Laker Lines about the new purchasing limits.
And, that’s not all. To further serve our colleagues, Procurement Services will also be holding the University’s first Procurement Day as well as a Vendor Expo during the first quarter of 2013. Look for more information on these events in forthcoming Laker Lines.
Recreation & Wellness Announces Lose to Win Incentive Program for Faculty/Staff
The Clayton State University Department of Recreation & Wellness and the Wellness Council is proud to announce the Lose to Win Incentive Program designed to help all Clayton State University employees start the New Year off right by losing weight and inches. The primary purpose of the program is to encourage Clayton State University faculty and staff to achieve a healthy weight and in an effort to enhance his/her overall health. Secondarily, we will be encouraging participants to engage in daily physical activity and reach the minimum exercise recommendations established by the American College of Sports Medicine (150 minutes/week).
This free program is open to
Clayton State University faculty and staff. Teams may be comprised for four full-time employees; however, teammates do NOT have to be from the same department.
Those choosing to participate will receive a personal assessment both at the beginning and at the end of the program consisting of a weigh-in and circumference measurements. Total loss will be calculated based on an average of all four team members’ inches and pounds lost from the initial to the final assessment. Don’t have a team? Sign up as a free agent and we will assist you with finding teammates.
Bonus points can also be earned by attending The Weight of the Nation
screening event on Tuesday, Jan. 29, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. All bonus points will be added to the final loss calculations. Each team member can earn two additional points by attending the screening event. The team with the most “loss” points wins.
The program starts on
the week of Jan. 14 to Jan. 18, 2013 (initial assessment week) and ends on the week of Apr. 8 to Apr. 12, 2013 (final assessment week).

LakerCard Center Upgrades SmartPrint
The LakerCard Center has just completed an upgrade to our SmartPrint system to include a new server and the newest version of the software. This upgrade should increase the efficiency and performance of the system. We appreciate your patience while we work out the kinks in the upgraded system.
At this time, all printers and copiers should be working properly for most faculty and staff and students. There may be a few exceptions to this. They are as follows:
- Some students, who have an older version of the SmartPrint driver installed on their laptop, will be unable to print now. They must uninstall the old driver and install the new driver. The HUB is in the process of crafting communication to all students to let them know that they make be affected by the change and how to install the new drivers.
- During the upgrade, we performed a clean-up of the user database. If you experience any issues using your LakerCard to copy, please contact the LakerCard Center at email@example.com and we will add you back to the database.
Again, your patience and corporation during this transition is greatly appreciated.
Department of Teacher Education Looks for Feedback for Accreditation
The Department of Education at Clayton State University is currently undergoing its reaccreditation process through the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). As part of this on-going process, the Department of Teacher Education has announced the opportunity for all interested parties to provide feedback on the University’s Teacher Education Program to its accrediting agency.
Interested parties are invited to submit third-party comments to NCATE. Please note that comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of professional education programs offered, and should specify the party's relationship to the institution, for example; graduate, present or former faculty member, employer of graduates, etc.

AVP/Controller Candidates Visiting Campus, Jan. 7-10 and Jan. 14-15
Six candidates for the AVP/Controller position will visit campus this month. Each candidate will make a 30 minute public presentation in room UC 260 of the James M. Baker University Center on the day of their visit. The entire campus is invited to attend. The presentations will all take place at 1:15 p.m., followed by a Q&A session.
SBDC Starting a Business Workshop, Jan. 11 at Clayton State – Fayette
The first installment of the Clayton State Small Business Development Center’s (SBDC) popular “Starting a Business” workshop for 2013 will be held on Friday, Jan. 11, from 9 a.m. to noon at the University’s Clayton State – Fayette instructional site, 100 World Dr., Ste. 100, Peachtree City, Ga.
PowerPoint handouts and a book, “How to Start a Business: A Guide for Georgia Entrepreneurs” are provided as part of the $69 registration fee.

First Lego League Super Regional Qualifier, Jan. 12
Clayton State, specifically the College of Information and Mathematical Sciences, will once again be hosting the First Lego League Super Regional Qualifier.
The event will be held on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, in the Baker Center (largely on Main Street and the Commons Area) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. CIMS’ Jay Terry is heading up the organization of the event. For details will be forthcoming.
King’s Celebration 2013, Jan. 15 to Jan. 21
The Annual Dr. Martin Luther King (MLK), Jr. Celebration is a collaborative effort between the Department of Campus Life, AmeriCorps, Diversity Education Experiences for Peers (D.E.E.P.) Educators, the Tau Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and the Sigma Sigma Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., to commemorate the life of Dr. King and significant events that occurred during the Civil Rights movement.
Jan. 15 — MLK Rally
Campus Life, in collaboration with AmeriCorps and D.E.E.P. Educators, will sponsor a rally at Forest Park High School to educate students about Dr. King’s dream, vision, and life as well as celebrate his legacy.

Run Clayton State 5K Run/Walk, Feb. 9
The Clayton State Department of Athletics and the Atlanta Southside Runners, a local running club, will team up to hold the second 5K Run/Walk, “Run Clayton State.”
The race, which will take place in conjunction with Clayton State’s Homecoming festivities, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9, and will run entirely on the University’s campus, starting and finishing in front of the Harry S. Downs Center.
Check-in for the race will begin at 7:45 a.m. in front of the Downs Center with the race beginning at 9 a.m. All runners will receive a T-shirt and age group winners will be recognized with awards. A special grand prize will be awarded to the top female and male winners. The race will also include admission to the Annual Alumni Breakfast, which starts at 9:30 a.m., also at the Harry S. Downs Center.
In addition, participants will receive complimentary tickets to the Saturday afternoon’s NCAA Division II women’s and men’s basketball games at Clayton State’s Athletics & Fitness Center. Clayton State’s women’s team will play Montevallo at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the men’s game against Montevallo at 5:30 p.m.
The entry fee for the race is $15 per person with the registration fee increasing after Feb. 6 to $20 per person. The race day entry fee is $25. A family rate (minimum of three, maximum of six participants) is also available. The family rate is $40 and increases to $55 after Feb. 6. The race day family rate is $75. To be guaranteed a race T-shirt, participants must be registered by Feb. 1.

Recreation & Wellness to Host AFAA’s APEX Event, Feb. 8 to Feb. 10
The Clayton State University Department of Recreation & Wellness is proud to host the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America’s (AFAA) semi-annual APEX event in the University’s Student Activities Center from Feb. 8 to Feb. 10, 2013.
During APEX, AFAA, the world's largest fitness and TeleFitness® educator, offers certifications and workshops in multiple cities for the special price of only $99 per day, per program. The training is targeted to primary group exercise instructor and kickboxing instructors seeking certification for the first time, or renewing a certification.
The primary group exercise instructor certifications will take place on Friday, Feb. 8, and Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, while the kickboxing instructor certification will take place on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013.
