Basketball this Week – Peach Belt Conference Championships at Columbus State
Both the Clayton State men’s and women’s basketball teams will be playing this week in the Peach Belt Conference championships at the Lumpkin Center at Columbus State. The third-ranked, 26-2 women’s team, the Peach Belt regular season champions, will play Augusta State Thursday, Mar. 1, at 1 p.m.
The men’s team will take on top seed USC Aiken, a team the Lakers have already beaten once this year, on Friday, Mar. 2 at 5 p.m.
Both tournaments will continue on Mar. 2 and Mar. 3, with the championships being held on Sunday, Mar. 4.
Additional Jupiter String Quartet Events
On Wednesday, Feb. 29 at 5 p.m., there’s a free concert by the Jupiter String Quartet at Atlantic Station. Join the Jupiters in the central park area of Atlantic Station for an evening of music as the stars come out. Stay and shop or have dinner. The Jupiters will also be giving two Young People’s Concerts at Spivey Hall, on Thursday, Mar. 1 at 9:45 a.m., and at 11:15 a.m. These 50 minute performances are intended to be an educational, enriching field trip for students. Safe Space Training is sponsored by the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services, Gay-Straight Alliance, and Department of Campus Life and the objectives are: (1) to provide a supportive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) members of the campus community; (2) increase the visible presence of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) allies and places that are “safe” for LGBT students across campus; and (3) dismiss negative stereotypes and present accurate information about the LGBT population.
More Websites to be Launched in the Content Management System Conversion
The new Content Management System (CMS) University home page along with the News and About Clayton State sites were successfully launched on Dec. 12, 2011. The HUB published its new site on Jan. 3, 2012.
The next websites to be launched are the administrative divisions: Academic Affairs, Business and Operations, External Relations, OITS, and Student Affairs. All departmental sites in these divisions have been converted to the CMS and will go live during the spring break week of Mar. 5. This domain (adminservices) comprises approximately 50 percent to 60 percent of the University website, so a successful outcome of this phase will be a significant milestone.
The focus will then turn to academic units. The timeline for completion of academic sites in order to allow more time for faculty members to convert their home pages to DNN has been revised. CIMS and College of Health sites may be ready by mid-May to June 1. For the College of Business, College of Arts and Sciences, and School of Graduate Studies, the date has been extended until July 1. This means that faculty will have three to four months to work with the Center for Instructional Development to convert faculty home pages and have a usable CMS site when the college and school sites go live.
The CMS conversion project is a collaboration among several divisions and departments: Dolores Cox, Leanne Bradberry, and Shannon Crupi in the External Relations Office of University Image and Communications; Tom Marshall, Chris Hansen, and Richard Young in OITS Administrative Systems; Roger Poore, Dan Newcombe, and Todd Birchfield in OITS Telecommunications & Networking; and Jill Lane, Lou Brackett, Steve Smith, James Fries, and Christopher White in the Academic Affairs Center for Instructional Development.

The Smith Awards Committee of Staff Council is currently accepting nominations of eligible employees.
To be eligible, the staff employee must be full-time benefited and have at least one year of credible service. The deadline for nominations is Wednesday, Mar. 7. Nominations will not be accepted after this deadline.

Library Adds New Book Return
What’s big, on Main Street in the University Center and bright orange? The library’s new big orange book return, of course! The library has installed a new book return on Main Street in the University Center. The additional book return was purchased in response to comments made on the fall 2011 Library Student Satisfaction Survey.
Patrons now have two places to return books when the library is closed: the new big orange book return in the UC, and the book return located in the wall of the Library exit. Students should be aware that time-sensitive materials such as books or DVDs on reserve for classes should be brought into the library to ensure proper check-in.
Veterans Resource Center to Construct “Wall of Recognition”
Plans are underway in the Veterans Resource Center (VRC) for the development and construction of a visual recognition of veterans and military service members on campus.
Members of the military service community (past/present/student/faculty/staff) are invited to bring in a photo, along with a brief military bio, to be displayed in the VRC during their time here at Clayton State University.
In anticipation of Grand Opening Day, Friday, Mar. 16, the VRC would like to have this display completed and in place by Friday, Mar. 9. Those wishing to participate in this project, please bring your photo and brief military bio to the VRC in STC115 (next to The Loch Shop) between the hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Clayton State to Host Mathematical Association of America, Mar. 9 and Mar. 10
Clayton State University will be the site of the Spring 2012 Mathematical Association of America (MAA) Southeastern Section Meeting.
Annual MAA Southeastern Section meeting will take place on Friday, Mar. 9 and Saturday, Mar. 10, during the University’s Spring Break. To give an idea of the scope of the conference, it is anticipated that all classrooms and open space in the James M. Baker University Center, Clayton State’s largest academic building, will be in use for the expected 500 attendees. In addition, the conference’s business meetings and general sessions will be held in the Student Activities center ballroom, also on Mar. 9 and Mar. 10. There will also be some pre-conference activities on campus on Thursday afternoon and evening, Mar. 8.
According to Dr. Cathie Aust, Clayton State Emerita Professor of Mathematics and the conference’s local arrangements coordinator, the conference is open to the public, one does not have to be a member of the MAA to attend. Dean Ogbuehi to Speak at Pan African Chamber of Commerce, Mar. 15
The Pan African American Chamber of Commerce will host “African Business & Development: Pathways & Partnerships for the 21st
Century” on Thursday, Mar. 15 at 11:30 a.m., at The World Trade Center Atlanta, located at 303 Peachtree St., NE, Ste. #100. Guest speaker Dr. Alphonso Ogbuehi, dean of the College of Business at Clayton State University, will present his take the enormous economic opportunities that have not been fully utilized between Africa and the United States.

Veterans Resource Center Grand Opening, Mar. 16
The new Veterans Resource Center, located in room STC115 of the Student Center (next to The Loch Shop), will hold its Grand Opening on Friday, Mar. 16, at 11:30 a.m. Clayton State President Dr. Tim Hynes, Vice President for External Relations Brig. Gen. (retired) Robert L. “Steve” Stephens, and a number of Clayton State’s student veterans will be in attendance. More details on the Grand Opening will be forthcoming.
Free Tax Assistance Returns at Clayton State, Mar. 17
Accounting students from the College of Business at Clayton State University will be taking a brief spring break over the next couple of weekends (maybe to do their own taxes). However, they will once again be offering free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) on Saturday, Mar. 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the College of Business Building. The final two VITA dates for 2012 will be Saturday, Mar. 24 and Saturday, Mar. 31.
Taxpayers will be assisted on a first come, first serve basis. If taxpayers have further questions they may call the VITA hotline at (678) 466-4527. Spanish translators are available, but must be scheduled in advance.
SBDC to Host “Starting a Business” Workshop at Clayton State – Fayette, Mar. 22
Clayton State University’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will be hosting a “Starting a Business” workshop, a comprehensive workshop on important decisions you make prior to opening a business, at the Clayton State – Fayette instructional site.
“Starting a Business” will be held on Thursday, Mar. 22, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Clayton State – Fayette, 100 World Dr., Ste. 100, in Peachtree City.
“If you are considering starting a business, this workshop is a crucial first step,” says SBDC Director Alisa Kirk.
PowerPoint handouts and a book, “How to Start a Business: A Guide for Georgia Entrepreneurs” will be provided.

NARA to Hold Workshop on 1940 Census, Mar. 24
The 1940 Census will be opened on Apr. 2, 2012, at 9 a.m. While statistics related to each census are released soon after the census is taken, the list of people who were enumerated is closed for 72 years for privacy restrictions.
The 1940 Census will be available free via NARA’s website, www.archives
. Users may access it from their personal computers at all hours and by using computers in libraries and other institutions.
However, it is not keyword searchable. Use of an enumeration district (ED) number is essential.
The National Archives at Atlanta will hold a workshop on the 1940 Census on Saturday, Mar. 24, 2012, at 10 a.m., to address questions asked on the census, how it’s different from past censuses, and how to obtain ED numbers.
The workshop is in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Friends of the National Archives, Southeast Region. There will be a brief business meeting and then the workshop will begin.

Education Speaker Series Discusses Bullying and “The Fat Boy Chronicles,” Mar. 26
Clayton State University’s Education Speaker Series, “Teaching in a Diverse World,” will continue on Monday, Mar. 26 by discussing a topic made even more relevant by the events yesterday at a high school outside of Cleveland, where a young man who had been subjected to school bullying shot five students, killing two.
Preventing Childhood Bullying: Viewing “The Fat Boy Chronicles,” will be the subject of a presentation on Mar. 26, from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., in the Auditorium of the main building of Clayton State – East, which is located on Trammell Road in Morrow, just east of the main Clayton State campus. Like all of the Education Speaker Series events, this presentation is free and open to the public.
Inspired by a true story, “The Fat Boy Chronicles” reveals the emotionally painful world obese teens experience in the face of a thin-obsessed society. A screening of the film will be followed by a panel discussion featuring author and former mathematics teacher, Michael Buchanan, along with actors, film makers, and children’s health advocates. Panelists will speak on the inspiration for the book and the issue of bullying in today’s classrooms. Also under discussion will be the craft of writing and the art of film making.
