Clark Howard Coming to Clayton State University on May 1
WSB consumer advocate Clark Howard will be filming his television show in the Atrium of the Harry S. Downs Center on the campus of Clayton State University on Thursday, May 1, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
WSB will be filming segments of a program about life after graduation, and Howard will be answering upcoming Clayton State graduates’ questions. He will also talk about student debt – including resources for paying student debt and the possibilities for deferring same -- and will have some ideas about graduate school. In addition, there will be questions and answers about obtaining a job after graduation.
While the program will be targeted towards soon-to-be-graduates all Clayton State students (and their parents) have been invited to attend. All Clayton State faculty members are also urged to encourage their students to attend – this is a rare opportunity to empower and support our students.
In addition, Howard will be soliciting questions from graduates in advance via email, sent to firstname.lastname@example.org with “Clayton State Question” in the subject line.
All those wishing to attend the filming should RSVP to email@example.com. Business casual attire is requested (i.e.; no shorts or flip flops), unless students would like to wear cap and gown, in which case they will receive preferential seating in the front rows of the audience.
First Aid Kits
At the building coordinators training last week, a staff member asked about acquiring first aid kids for campus departmental use if needed.
For your information, Georgia Enterprises has a mandatory statewide contract for both general and specialized first aid kits. If you purchase a first aid kit for your area, please ensure that it is maintained in an easily accessible location and its existence is communicated to all departmental staff.

Please be certain to send quote requests for new computer hardware, software, or other technology assets to the HUB's email address, email@example.com. Sending quote request to a specific HUB representative may result in delayed processing times. When quote requests are properly received at the HUB's email address, all involved parties are alerted and the request is still processed in the event a specific HUB representative is unavailable.
"Managing the Source of Your Stress,” Apr. 30
Do you know the source of your stress and how to manage that stress? If you answered no, then this workshop is for you!
The sources of our stress can be work, family, school, relationships, finances, health, and major life changes. Participants will practice positive coping skills to manage the stress in their life. Deep breathing, muscle tension relaxation, shoulder/neck massage, affirmation and visualization and relaxation/revitalization exercises will be taught in a relaxed atmosphere.
"Managing The Source Of Your Stress," presented by Gloria Elder, deputy director of training at the Holistic Stress Control Institute of Atlanta, will be held on Wednesday, Apr. 30, in the James M. Baker University Center, room UC268, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Graduate Nursing Program to Hold First Research Symposium, May 2
Dr. Victoria Foster, assistant professor of Nursing and interim director of Clayton State University’s Graduate Nursing Program, has announced that the Graduate Nursing Program will be holding the first of what it expects to be an annual series of Research Symposia.
The Research Symposium will be held on Friday, May 2, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Clayton State main campus in Morrow. The focus for the symposium will be clinical research and its impact on patient outcomes. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Elizabeth Tornquist, author of From Proposal to Publication: An Informal Guide to Writing About Nursing Research. Tornquist, who is retired from the University of North Carolina, travels across the country to speak about writing and publication. According to Foster, there will also be several dynamic and nationally-known nurse researchers/nurse scientists presenting their current research… providing Clayton State students and other attendees with an empowering opportunity within their profession.
“Our graduate students are exposed to educational research, but I wanted them to see and be aware of the importance of clinical research,” explains Foster. “That was the thinking behind creating the symposium.”
Among the presenters will be Clayton State Assistant Professor of Nursing Dr. Dee Tanner, who will be doing a podium as well as a poster presentation. Dr. Lisa Eichelberger, dean of the College of Health at Clayton State (of which the Graduate Nursing Program is a part), will discuss the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) Future of Nursing. She has been working with a group of other Georgia educators on IOM's mission. Also presenting will be Dr. Dawn Aycock and Dr. Patricia Clark, who are both faculty at Georgia State University, and will be presenting on their current research and different research methodologies.
In addition, Dr. Ora Strickland, dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at Florida International University, will speak about her research, but will also talk about leadership, since some of Clayton State’s graduate nursing students are in the leadership track.

Lakeside Dining Hall Closing Date for End of Spring Semester
The Lakeside Dining Hall will close at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 12, and will remain closed through the summer semester. The Dining Hall will resume normal operating hours on Monday, Aug. 18, when fall classes begin.
All Meal Plans End Monday, May 12
All meal plans and dining dollars will expire Monday, May 12, 2014. Unused meals and dining dollars expire at 2 p.m. when the Lakeside Dining Hall and retail units close.

Communications Conference on Social Media, May 12, May 13
The Communications Conference on Social Media is sponsored by the University System of Georgia and the Technical College System of Georgia. This conference is designed for all employees of the USG and TCSG System offices and institutions that have any involvement or interest in social media. Each session is designed to give high-level insight into the different aspects of efficiently using social media in higher education.

Clayton County Community Emergency Preparedness Seminar, May 13
Clayton County’s Community Emergency Preparedness Seminar, “Community Emergency Preparedness Takes a Village” will be held on Tuesday, May 13, from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at The National Archives at Atlanta, 5780 Jonesboro Rd., Morrow. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and the seminar will start promptly at 9:15 a.m.

Bookstore Bucks Dates for Summer 2014
Bookstore Bucks (formerly Financial Aid Book Money) will be available May 21 to May 31, 2014. Up to $1,000 of your unused Financial Aid will be automatically deposited in your Bookstore Bucks account on May 21 for you to purchase anything in the Loch Shop.
Remember… your LakerCard is required for all purchases! After May 31, any unused Bookstore Bucks are returned to your student account and refunded around the second week of June based on your refund preference through Higher One.
Clayton State Reschedules Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for May 30
The Clayton State Department of Athletics has announced the rescheduling of the department’s initial Hall of Fame induction ceremony for Friday, May 30.
The ceremony was originally scheduled for Feb. 14, but had to be postponed due to inclement weather. For the rescheduled event, there will be a change of venue as the Hall of Fame Dinner and induction ceremony will be held at Crystal Lake Golf and Country Club in Hampton, Ga.
The event will begin with dinner at 7 p.m., followed by the induction ceremony. In addition to the Hall of Fame event, the Department of Athletics is also sponsoring a golf tournament earlier in the day at Crystal Lake.
The tournament will be open to all supporters of Clayton State Athletics. Check-in for the tournament will be at 10:30 a.m., with a shot-gun start at 11 a.m. The cost of the tournament is $100 per person or $400 for a four-person team.
Participants of the golf tournament are also invited to attend the Hall of Fame event later that evening. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Clayton State Department of Athletics. To register for the tournament, please call (678) 466-4678.

Clayton State Athletics Ready to Kickoff 2014 Summer Youth Athletic Camps
The Clayton State Department of Athletics is preparing to kick-off its 2014 summer youth athletic camp schedule.
The first series of camps will begin the week of June 2. All camps are held on the campus of Clayton State University. The department offers athletic camps for boys and girls in the following sports: soccer, basketball, tennis, speed development and a general sports activities camp.
The week-long camps are offered to youth ages six-to-17 years-old and run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Half-day camps are also available either in the morning or in the afternoon. Campers may also choose to combine two different half-day camps if they wish.

Clayton State’s athletic camps are designed to provide the highest quality instruction in a safe, fun, and socially-enriching environment. The primary goal is for all campers to enjoy themselves while also learning and improving their skills.
Daily activities are led by Clayton State head coaches and focus on character building aspects of each individual sport, including self-esteem, discipline and responsibility. The camps combine small group instruction as well as game play to ensure development of fundamental skills and game knowledge.

Business Operations Changes
With the arrival of Human Resources Director Tom Gausvik, Vice President for Business Operations Corlis Cummings has been considering changing the reporting line of the payroll office from Budget and Finance to Human Resources. Gausvik has several years’ experience managing a payroll office in Virginia and she wants to use that experience for the University’s benefit.
Consequently, on May 1, the Clayton State University Payroll unit will become part of the Department of Human Resources.
During the month of May, there will be a joint reporting relationship as payroll operations transition to Human Resources (HR). Normal business and payroll operations will continue without disruption of services and payroll's phone numbers will remain the same.
Several years ago payroll was part of HR, so their reintegration once again creates a single entity. The intent of the change is to positively impact how we manage our workforce, as well as implement the concept of one-stop service for both HR and Payroll services and operations.
Once the transfer of Payroll to HR is complete, the Payroll unit will report to Angela Free, as associate director of Benefits and Payroll. More information about the change will be forthcoming. If there are questions please contact Cummings or Gausvik, at email@example.com or (678) 466-4232.
Disability Resource Center Final Exam Scheduling for Spring 2014
In order to serve all students with disabilities requesting approved testing accommodations, the Disability Resource Center (DRC) is resuming “block” scheduling for final exams. Test security and academic integrity continue to be a priority.
Final Exam Block Administration Schedule:
Morning (8 a.m.) Block (for course exams scheduled prior to 12:30 p.m.):
· Student reports to DRC at 8 a.m., beginning exam no later than 8:15 a.m.
Afternoon (12:15 p.m.) Block (for course exams scheduled at 12:30 p.m. or later):
· Student reports to DRC at 12:15 p.m., beginning exam no later than 12:30 p.m.
Final exams are administered at the DRC on the same day as the rest of the class unless there is a logistical conflict, in which case a reasonable alternative will be negotiated with the professor.
Online exams not requiring proctoring are generally subject to the same window of availability as other students in the class. Adjust extended test administration time accordingly. For technical assistance contact the Center for Instructional Development (CID) at (678) 466-4190 or CID@clayton.edu.
Proctored online exams requiring accommodations may be administered by the DRC according to the schedule above.
Please provide exams to our office as early as possible, allowing the DRC sufficient time process the exam. Delivery via email to DisabilityResourceCenter@clayton.edu is encouraged facilitating the use of assistive technology (e.g. text-to-voice, voice to text, magnification software). Exams may also be faxed securely to (678) 466-5467, or hand delivered. Please do not send exams via inter-office mail.

Request from Public Safety – Enter Your Number in the Text Message Data Bank
When there is an emergency situation that could impact the safety of our campus, whether it be a human threat or weather related, we send out notifications mainly by email and text message.
Since many of you probably see the text messages much quicker than the emails, it is essential that everyone who has a telephone capable of receiving text messages enter your number into the University system to ensure that you receive the messages. It is an “opt in” system, which means that you have to personally enter your number. As a reminder, the process is very easy and quick:
· Go to the Clayton State University website
· Click on the “Swan”
· Click on “My Tab”
· Scroll down to “Emergency Text Messages” and enter your telephone number and the communications carrier (e.g. Verizon, AT&T, or other)
· Then hit “Save” and you’re done.
It’s that easy, so if you haven’t already done so, please do so now, or if you have changed numbers or carriers since last entered, please update now.
Clayton County Humane Society Needs Volunteers
The Clayton County Humane Society has two wonderful volunteer opportunities available on Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3.
On May 2, between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., volunteers are needed to help load items from the storage facility onto the truck to be transported to Jonesboro High School.
Then on May 3, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., volunteers are needed to assist at the Annual Spring Treasures Yard Sale held at Jonesboro High School.

New Dream Catchers Program!
The legend of the dream catcher embodies the idea that only good dreams are filtered through the netting allowing the good to pass through the feathers to the people. Clayton State is an entire community that rallies around the individual dreams and aspirations of its people. Clayton State’s key attributes are creating an empowering experience, offering a supportive community, as well as offering inclusive diversity and an engaged, experiential preparation.
The “Dream Catchers” program allows faculty and staff to nominate a fellow colleague, themselves or even a department that really embodies one or all of the attributes. It’s a way to remind all of us what makes our university unique! We will recognize these nominations monthly and encourage all of you to tell us how dreams are made real in your area. Safety Awareness at Shopping Centers and Malls
There have been a few publicized criminal incidents outside of metro shopping centers and malls recently.
Clayton State’s Bobby Hamil has also been advised of at least two Clayton State employees being followed out of Southlake Mall recently by suspicious persons. Morrow PD also advised of a recent armed robbery in the Southlake Mall parking lot.
This is not meant to discourage shopping at nearby shopping centers and malls, but just to encourage you to increase your safety awareness when doing so, especially when walking to your vehicles. Avoid talking on cell phones or using electronic devices while walking, as that could adversely affect your awareness of your surroundings. Try to keep one hand free while walking, to use defensively if needed. When you arrive at your vehicle, have keys already in hand, and lock doors after entry. Don’t delay your departure by talking on your cell phone.
Since the incidents have occurred at various times of the day and night, these safety measures should be practiced at all times.
Clayton State Schedules Information Sessions for Digital Film Technician I and II
Lights! Camera! Action! The Clayton State University Division of Continuing Education is gearing up for its second round of information sessions and classes for Digital Film Technician Training I and II.
The highly-successful first set of Film Tech I courses, taught by long-time digital film industry expert Barton Bond, have been playing to full houses of 40+ students each since February. With the next round of classes due to start in June, Clayton State is holding three information sessions prior to the start of classes.
The first will be held on Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to noon in Fayette County. The exact location is still to be determined, so interested parties are urged to check the Continuing Education website at www.conted.clayton.edu for location details. The second information session will be held on Saturday, May 31, also from 10 a.m. to noon, in the Harry S. Downs Center on the Clayton State main campus in Morrow. The third session will be on Saturday, July 12, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., also in the Downs Center.
