Women’s Soccer to Host Montevallo in Peach Belt Conference Quarterfinal Action, Nov. 5
The Peach Belt Conference champion Clayton State women’s soccer team will enter this week’s 2013 PBC Soccer Tournament as the league’s top seed, hosting a quarterfinal match on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. at Laker Field. Clayton State will host eighth-seeded Montevallo in the first round of the Championships.
Admission to the match is $5, and children 12-under are admitted free. Clayton State students and faculty/staff are admitted free with their Laker Card. The match will stream live at http://www.ustream.tv/claytonstateathletics.
The Lakers enter the tournament with an 8-0-3 conference record and finished the regular season as the only undefeated team in the league. The team is also riding a school record 13-game unbeaten streak and holds an 11-3-4 overall record.
The winner of Tuesday’s match will face the winner of the match between fourth-seeded Lander and fifth-seeded North Georgia. The semifinals and the finals of the PBC Championships will be held near Augusta, Ga., at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga., on Friday, Nov. 8, and Sunday, Nov. 10.

Dr. Michelle Huang, pianist, will present a free recital and workshop on Nov. 15, in room 157 of the Music Education Building. The recital will be at 2 p.m. and the workshop, which is relevant to musicians and anyone who wants to relieve stress, will be from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. No reservations needed, and refreshments are included.

Drs. Howell and Zeller Participating in Peach State Opera Performance, Jan. 11
Clayton State University professors Dr. Christina Howell, performing the role of Despina, and Dr. Kurt-Alexander Zeller, director, are both involved in Peach State Opera's upcoming performance of Mozart's Cosi fan tutte, being performed locally at the Avondate First Baptist Church, 47 Covington Rd., Avondale Estates, Ga., at 3 p.m. on Jan. 11, 2014.

How to get Around the Science Building Construction
Construction of the new science building on campus will begin on or about Nov. 8, 2013. The site of the construction will be the areas currently occupied by the faculty/staff parking lot (across from the LAB) and parking lot F. However, part of parking lot F will be restored after completion of the construction.
Here is a summary of the major impacts and changes to campus parking lots and roadways during the construction, and, even if you’re not one of those people to whom a picture is worth a thousand words, here’s a link to the campus map that also illustrates the changes…
Parking lot impacts
· A section of parking lot D will be designated for faculty/staff parking only to accommodate for those parking spaces affected by the construction.
· The disability parking row that is currently in the faculty/staff parking lot will be relocated to the D lot.
· Parking lot F will be closed for construction use only. Additional construction vehicles will park along the fence line in lot L near the tennis courts.
· A section of parking lot G will be designated for student parking only to accommodate for those parking spaces affected by the construction.
· Parking will remain available in lot E for faculty, staff, and students.
· Caldwell Drive will be closed from public use for incoming traffic just past the first entrance to parking lot D (across from Arts and Sciences Building). Traffic will be detoured through lot D at that point.
· Caldwell Drive will also be closed from public use for outgoing traffic from the G and H lots. All traffic to and from lots G and H must use Snelling Drive.
We apologize in advance for any inconvenience caused by the construction of the science building, but with any new development, some disruption is unavoidable. However, we always try to minimize the impact on daily life as much as possible.
Athletic Hall of Fame Nominations Deadline Nov. 4
Clayton State recently kicked off 2013-14 athletic season, and it will be an extra special one in the history of Laker Athletics program.
In the athletic program’s 24th year of competition, Athletic Director Carl McAloose announces that Clayton State will start its Athletic Hall of Fame during the upcoming season with the first class of inductees planned for enshrinement in February of 2014.
“After speaking with many people associated with our program, we feel like it is time to start a Clayton State Athletics Hall of Fame,” says McAloose. “We’ve had hundreds of student-athletes along with many coaches, administrators and community members who have excelled at the highest levels, and we look forward to recognizing their achievements with such a lasting honor.”
Nominations for Hall of Fame inductees will be open to the public, beginning today via the Clayton State Athletics website. Along with an online nomination, the site also includes the criteria for nomination and the selection process.
From the nominations, a Hall of Fame committee, consisting of 12 members will select the inductees. The Committee consists of athletic department administrators/coaches, university faculty/ staff and community members.
The deadline for nominations will be Monday, Nov. 4. Plans are for the first Hall of Fame Class to be announced in January of 2014 and to be recognized at Homecoming festivities, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 15.

The Clayton State Women’s Forum will be holding its Annual Auction, Chili Cook-off and Quilt Raffle on Thursday, Nov. 7.
The organization’s mission is to sustain a Women’s Forum Scholarship Fund in support of assisting students with general and emergency resources to aid in their successful completion of academic studies. Proceeds from all events go to the Scholarship Fund.

Producer and Recording Engineer Matt Forger to Lecture at Clayton State, Nov. 7
One of the hallmarks of a Clayton State University education is experiential learning — the opportunity to further one’s education, and the learning process, outside the classroom.
Clayton State’s Student Activities Center will be just such a site on Thursday, Nov. 7, when the Clayton Media & Entertainment Association (CMEA) hosts a special guest lecture by producer and recording engineer Matt Forger.
While the term “special” tends to be over-used, Clayton State Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Shawn Young says that this is one occasion that fits. After all, it is rare that students (and that includes high school students, students from other colleges and anyone else who wants to attend) get a chance to hear from someone who has worked with… Sir Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, Donna Summer, Patti Austin, Missing Persons, Michael McDonald, James Ingram, Siedah Garrett, Quincy Jones, Steven Spielberg, John Landis, George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, Giorgio Moroder, Larry John McNally, George Duke, Patrick O'Hearn, Gilberto Gil, Simon Lynge, Rod Temperton, Bruce Swedien and more than a few other giants in the recording and film industries.
Forger will be lecturing from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Student Activities Center (SAC). As noted, his presentation is free and open to the public. However, the ballroom only seats about 650, so it might be a good idea to come early.
Zombie Fun Run Hosted by Recreation & Wellness, Nov. 8
Registration is now open for the first-ever Clayton State University Zombie Fun Run on Friday, Nov. 8, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., on the SAC Green!
Dress up like a scary zombie or a human and run our 3000 meter route to safety. CE Wedding Planning Workshop, Nov. 9
On Saturday, Nov. 9 and Saturday, Nov. 16, Dawn Davis will lead a two-session Planning Your Own Wedding workshop.
Whether you are going to plan your entire wedding yourself, or hiring a wedding planner, this workshop is designed to give you insightful information to help take some of the anxiety out of one of the most wonderful days of your life.
From negotiating a contract for a venue or vendors, to picking out a wedding dress, deciding who to invite, using your fingers instead of your feet, staying on budget and the list goes on and on.
This two-day, 12-hour workshop will save time, money, feelings and, most of all, your sanity.

Clayton State’s Veterans Day Celebration
Clayton State University has long been known for its support of Veterans, and of Veterans Day.
This coming Nov. 11 is no exception, except that maybe Clayton State is gearing up for Veterans Day a little early.
Nor surprisingly, the Student Veterans Association has been at the forefront of the University’s Veterans Day efforts. SVA is calling for all staff, faculty and students who serve or have served in the Armed Forces to provide brief biographies and pictures to display in the James M. Baker University Center on Veterans Day.
Still prior to Veterans Day, the Clayton State Office of Career Services and the Veterans Resource Center are partnering with the Department of Labor to present a Veterans Employment Seminar on career opportunities for veterans, on-the-job training opportunities and converting military skills and experience into a civilian résumé.
This is an excellent opportunity to learn about companies who are recruiting veterans, employment assistance available for veterans and how the Office of Career Services can help you prepare for your new career, notes Director of Career Services Bridgette McDonald. The seminar is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 4 p.m. in the Arts and Sciences Building, room 227.
Finally, the University’s annual Veteran's Day Ceremony will take place on Monday, Nov. 11 when SVA and the VRC invite all students, faculty, staff and the public to attend the ceremony at 9 a.m. at the outdoor Lawson Amphitheater (The inclement weather location is the Baker Center, room 272.) Immediately following the ceremony, Roll Call for Georgia’s fallen will begin. In addition a moment of silence will be held at 11 a.m.

Teacher Education is once again organizing a Lunch and Learn series for faculty and staff who want learn about using technology. These sessions will take place in A&S 205 in the Resource Room.
Faculty and staff, both novices and experts in using technology, are encouraged to bring a lunch and come share in the knowledge.

The Clayton State University School of Graduate Studies will be holding its next informational Open House on Tuesday, Nov. 12, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Room 101 of the Harry S. Downs Center.
The Open House will give prospective graduate students a chance to learn more about the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (concentrations in English, Criminology, History, Political Science and Liberal Arts), Master of Arts in Teaching English, Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics, Master of Education with a major in Teacher Leadership, Master of Business Administration (concentrations in Accounting, International Business, and Supply Chain Management), Master of Health Administration, Master of Science in Nursing (concentrations in Education and Leadership), Master of Archival Studies and Master of Science in Psychology (concentrations in Applied Developmental and Clinical).
Individuals are not required to register for this event.
Science Building Groundbreaking, Nov. 14
The official groundbreaking ceremony for Clayton State University’s $19.8 million science building will be held on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, starting at 3:30 p.m., on the site of the new building, located in the parking lot across from the University’s Laboratory Annex Building. The groundbreaking will be held rain or shine under a tent constructed for the occasion, and will be followed by a reception in the lobby of the Clayton State Natural and Behavioral Sciences Building. Faculty and staff members who wish to attend the groundbreaking and reception should RSVP to Jill Sears at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The groundbreaking will coincide with the beginning of construction, and will feature speeches by University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby, Clayton State President Dr. Thomas Hynes, and Dean Dr. Nasser Momayezi.
The science building is expected to be completed in June 2015 with classes starting with the fall 2015 semester.

Fall 2013 Visiting Writer’s Reading Series, Nov. 14
For this semester, the Visiting Writer’s Reading Series is trying something new… a large event featuring Janisse Ray.
The event is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 14, and will include a lecture/presentation at 2:10 p.m. in room UC 416 of the Baker Center and a poetry reading at 5:30 p.m. in room UC 272 of the Baker Center.
Writer, naturalist and activist Ray is author of four books of literary nonfiction and a collection of nature poetry. She is on the faculty of Chatham University’s low-residency MFA program and is a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow. She holds an MFA from the University of Montana, and in 2007 was awarded an honorary doctorate from Unity College in Maine.
Ray has won a Southern Booksellers Award for Poetry 2011, Southeastern Booksellers Award for Nonfiction 1999, an American Book Award 2000, the Southern Environmental Law Center 2000 Award for Outstanding Writing, and a Southern Book Critics Circle Award 2000. Her “Ecology of a Cracker Childhood” was a New York Times Notable Book and was chosen as the Book All Georgians Should Read.
Ray attempts to live a simple, sustainable life on a farm in southern Georgia with her husband, Raven Waters. Ray is an organic gardener, seedsaver, tender of farm animals, and slow-food cook. She lectures widely on nature, community, agriculture, wildness, sustainability and the politics of wholeness.

Clayton Nonprofit Forum, Nov. 14
Sponsored by Clayton State University, the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, Clayton Fund, and the Georgia Center for Nonprofits, the Clayton Nonprofit Forum is designed to bring together community of nonprofit leaders in Clayton County to gain knowledge, network, and develop solutions to address community needs.
The forum will be held on Thursday, Nov.14, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in room CE 101 of the Harry S. Downs Center. Registration is $35 per person, and is limited to two people per organization.
What Will Nonprofits Learn?
STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS: In a current economic climate where available resources are tight and the need for services are growing, nonprofits have to look at different ways of delivering on their mission with the “Big Picture” in mind. The keynote speaker, Bill Bolling, will address the critical need for strategic partnerships within the nonprofit sector to help nonprofits achieve more and improve long term sustainability. Bolling is founder and executive director of the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
EFFECTIVE FUNDRAISING: This workshop will provide nonprofits with knowledge, tools and tips on how to adjust current fundraising models to not only be more effective but to also expend your donor base.
BUILDING A STRONG BOARD: A strong board is key for nonprofit organizations to be successful, and to maximize impact. Learn how to build a strong base of support and strengthen organizational effectiveness through your board.
HOW TO GET A GRANT FROM THE CLAYTON FUND: This workshop will provide valuable information and direction regarding the upcoming 2014 Clayton Fund grant cycle. It includes discussion of the overall process, eligibility guidelines, and completing the on-line application and timeline. In addition, the Clayton State Library now contains books and databases of the Foundation Center Library which will greatly aid in the search for grant money.

Budget Managers' Handbook Training, Nov. 21
The Budget Office will soon be rolling out a new Budget Managers’ Handbook. This handbook will have sections associated with all areas of business functions to help you in processing your business transactions throughout the year. Therefore, we will be offering the annual Budget Management Training course. This training will include the normal budgetary report training, but in addition to that it will also introduce the other sections in the Budget Managers’ Handbook.
For those new to the budget management area on campus this year, this training will show you the reports you will need to submit on a quarterly basis and how to monitor your budget throughout the year. The budget portion of this training that is provided is also located at the link below as a PowerPoint presentation. It gives you a step by step process along with screen shots of how to run each report you will need to run in PeopleSoft.

As part of Student Success/National Student Day, and just because we feel like it, The Loch Shop will be collecting donations for the Help Us Crush Hunger campaign now through Oct. 31. (That’s Crush, as in Orange Crush.) Donate a non-perishable food Item or laundered, gently-worn clothing and receive a 25 percent discount on gifts and clothing at The Loch Shop, through Oct. 31. (Discount does not apply to Clearance items.)
In addition, The Loch Shop will be collecting the names of each person who donates, and the person who donates the most items between now and Oct. 31 will win a special prize which will be announced at the Annual Loch Shop Costume Contest.

2014 SCCP Giving Campaign
Every year employees across the state demonstrate their compassion and generosity through the official workplace giving campaign for state employees and the University System of Georgia. Our 2014 State Charitable Contributions Program (SCCP) Annual Campaign will run through November 30, 2013. During the campaign, you will learn more about how we can address critical needs in Georgia, across the nation, and around the world by giving to the SCCP.
As always, you have the ability to direct donations to your favorite charities. Again this year, contributions can be designated to the Clayton State University Foundation, charity code 187000, to fund student scholarships and other activities supporting the University mission.
It’s quick and easy to give in three simple steps. Employees may also submit paper pledge forms to the agency campaign coordinator, Vickie Smith.
1. LOGIN at www.giveattheoffice.org/_sccp. Click LOGIN and then enter your username and password from last year; or click “I am a first time donor” to sign up by choosing your own username and password; or “I forgot my login or password” to recover your information. New donors do not have pre-assigned usernames and passwords.
2. CHOOSE how much you want to give in either a one-time gift or through payroll deduction. Online donations for payroll deduction will be validated through a separate confirmation email after the pledge has been processed (within 3 days).

2013 Required Employee Training
It’s that time of the year for all faculty and staff to complete training required by Clayton State University, Board of Regents, and the State of Georgia.
The Right to Know (RTK), Ethics, Security Awareness, Campus Vehicle Use and Sexually Harassment courses must all be completed on an annual basis. During this time period, we ask that you also take a moment to review the updated Clayton State University Employee Handbook and complete a new Employee Handbook Acknowledgement Form. The signed Acknowledgement Form and five required courses should be completed by Dec. 1, 2013.

o Right to Know (RTK) – At the end of the session, enter the requested information and submit.
o Ethics – Presentation, Assessment and Compliance Agreement
§ Basic – New Faculty/Staff
§ Refresher 2011 – Faculty/Staff active as of Dec. 31, 2010
o Security Awareness – Review the presentation and complete the assessment.
o Campus Vehicle Use Training – Review the videos, complete assessments, and forward the Acknowledgement Form to HR
o Sexual Harassment – Review the policy, responsibilities, and video content, then take the assessment/quiz.

First Lego League Volunteers Needed
Many of you have expressed interest in helping Clayton State University Host the 2013 First Lego League Super Regionals on Jan. 11, 2014. The event will be held in Clayton State University's University Center again and it is an all-day event.
Below, you will find two websites that can give you a great deal of information on this year's topic "Nature's Fury," how the topic will be integrated into this season, and Georgia's calendar regarding the season.
Some of you have volunteered before, so you know how much effort and preparation is required to host the event well. We will need a plethora of volunteers this year and help in fundraising and advertising. We have a great set of sub-topic leaders returning to get us moving forward, but there is plenty of work to do.
We hope to start subcommittee meetings in October and offering judge/referee trainings in November in preparation. Attached is a Doodle poll to assist in helping us put persons in volunteer areas that meet their interests. We hope that this will simplify the scheduling process by allowing the separate subcommittees to set meeting schedules once the subs are identified.
