Parking Lot Closures
This is a reminder that effective Tuesday, Nov. 12, the faculty/staff parking lot across from the LAB and Parking Lot F will be closed due to the initiation of the new science building construction.
Any vehicles remaining in those lots after 11 p.m., Monday, Nov. 11 will be subject to being towed at the owner’s expense. Temporary ADA parking will be located on the eastern side of Lot D across from the lower end of the Arts and Sciences Building.
Clayton State to Celebrate International Education Week
Clayton State University will be celebrating International Education Week (IEW) with five programs between Nov. 12 and Nov. 19.
An initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, colleges nationwide are celebrating IEW and, according to Dr. Kevin Demmitt, Clayton State associate vice president for Extended Programs, both the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia and Clayton State have highlighted international education in their strategic plans.
Clayton State’s IEW events will start with the Interfaith Leadership Ambassador Program campus presentations in Student Activities Center Ballroom A, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12. Next is Clayton State’s annual Study Abroad Fair, scheduled for Main Street in the James M. Baker University Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13.
The U.S. Peace Corps will have a recruiting table set up on Main Street from 10 a.m. to noon on Nov. 13, and there will also be a “Foreign Facts, Fonts & Fortunes” table on Main Street from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 13.
Finally, Clayton State’s Third Annual International Feast, “The More We Get Together” will be held in the Ballrooms of the Student Activities Center from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19. “The More We Get Together” International Feast in preparation to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday season. The student organizations and departments bring together various foods, history, traditions, and cultures of how the holiday is celebrated all over the world at the International Feast, which is for Clayton State students, faculty and staff.

Clayton State’s Veterans Day Celebration
The University’s annual Veteran's Day Ceremony is taking place now, as the SVA and the VRC invite all students, faculty, staff and the public to attend the ceremony, which started at 9 a.m., at the outdoor Lawson Amphitheater. Immediately following the ceremony, starting around 10 a.m., the Roll Call for Georgia’s fallen will begin. In addition, a moment of silence will be held at 11 a.m.
Teacher Education Lunch and Learn Series, Nov. 11
Teacher Education is once again organizing a Lunch and Learn series for faculty and staff who want learn about using technology. These sessions will take place in A&S 205 in the Resource Room.
Faculty and staff, both novices and experts in using technology, are encouraged to bring a lunch and come share in the knowledge.

Clayton State’s November Service Learning Series is Dedicated to Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
The Department of Campus Life will dedicate its November Service Learning Series to raising awareness about poverty and the homeless population through Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.
The week of activities includes a donation table on Main Street in the James M. Baker University Center from Monday, Nov. 11 through Wednesday, Nov. 13, wherein Campus Life will be collecting items for the Laker Care Closet.
Voices for Homelessness will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 12 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Lawson Outdoor Amphitheater. Students will bring awareness to the issues of poverty through the use artistic expression such as music, poetry and visual arts.
On Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m., in Ballroom A of the Student Activities Center, a panel of invited guests will speak and answer questions about the challenges and success of people affected by homelessness and poverty.
Clayton State students, faculty and staff are encouraged to have lunch at the University’s Lakeside Café on Thursday, Nov. 14. There will be an interactive display in the Lakeside Café that day, designed to bring attention to how much food we waste as a community.
The week culminates in the University’s annual Sleep-Out for the Homeless and Hunger Banquet events, starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, and continuing through 6 a.m., on Saturday, Nov. 16.
The Sleep-Out will take place on “The Green,” the large open area behind the Student Activities Center. All participants at the Sleep Out are strongly encouraged to dress in warm layers and bring sleeping bags or blankets. Hot chocolate and access to restrooms will be provided. Donations for the Laker Care Closet will also be accepted at the Sleep-Out.

Open Enrollment, Nov. 11 to Nov. 22
Open Enrollment is Monday, Nov. 11 to Friday, Nov. 22. You have only two weeks for Open Enrollment this year! Active enrollment is required for all benefits-eligible faculty and staff, which means you must log into ADP to review your benefit options and make elections. More information will be provided in the coming weeks.
Don’t forget, benefit providers will be available to answer your questions at the Benefits Fair (see below), so plan to stop by with a donation to help support The Rainbow House and stay for wellness, fitness, food and fun activities.
School of Graduate Studies Open House, Nov. 12
The Clayton State University School of Graduate Studies will be holding its next informational Open House on Tuesday, Nov. 12, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Room 101 of the Harry S. Downs Center.
The Open House will give prospective graduate students a chance to learn more about the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (concentrations in English, Criminology, History, Political Science and Liberal Arts), Master of Arts in Teaching English, Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics, Master of Education with a major in Teacher Leadership, Master of Business Administration (concentrations in Accounting, International Business, and Supply Chain Management), Master of Health Administration, Master of Science in Nursing (concentrations in Education and Leadership), Master of Archival Studies and Master of Science in Psychology (concentrations in Applied Developmental and Clinical).

Shontelle Thrash Performing “Mother to Mother,” Nov. 13 and Nov. 14
Our own Shontelle Thrash will be taking a brief respite from her duties as director of the Clayton State Theatre to perform the one woman show, "Mother to Mother" on Wednesday, Nov. 13 and Thursday, Nov. 14 Theatrical Outfit, 84 Luckie St., NW, Atlanta, as part of Africa Atlanta 2014.
“Mother to Mother” is a one-woman play by Sindiwe Magona about the killing of Amy Biehl, an American Fulbright scholar, by a mob of students when she drove into the township of Guguletu on the eve of South Africa's independence election. Told from the perspective of the mother of one of the boys accused of her death, this writing takes the form of an epistolary addressed to the mother of Amy Biehl.
The 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13 performance is a special fundraiser for Africa Atlanta 2014, and all tickets are $50 ($54.25 w/handling fee).
Tickets for the Nov. 14 performance are $10 Students (with ID), $25 General Audience (w/ handling fee — $12.25 student; $28 adult). The curtain is 7:30 p.m.

Clayton State Theatre Fall Show 2013, Nov. 14, Nov. 15
The Clayton State Theatre’s 2013 Fall Show, “Pathways: a 10 minute Play Festival” will have its final performances on Thursday, Nov. 14 and Friday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Clayton State Theatre, room G-132 of the Arts and Sciences Building. Pathways” is written by students and alumni of Clayton State.
Science Building Groundbreaking, Nov. 14
The official groundbreaking ceremony for Clayton State University’s $19.8 million science building will be held on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, starting at 3:30 p.m., on the site of the new building, located in the parking lot across from the University’s Laboratory Annex Building. The groundbreaking will be held rain or shine under a tent constructed for the occasion, and will be followed by a reception in the lobby of the Clayton State Natural and Behavioral Sciences Building. Faculty and staff members who wish to attend the groundbreaking and reception should RSVP to Jill Sears at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The groundbreaking will coincide with the beginning of construction, and will feature speeches by University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby, Clayton State President Dr. Thomas Hynes, and Dean Dr. Nasser Momayezi.
The science building is expected to be completed in June 2015 with classes starting with the fall 2015 semester.

Fall 2013 Visiting Writer’s Reading Series, Nov. 14
For this semester, the Visiting Writer’s Reading Series is trying something new… a large event featuring Janisse Ray.
The event is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 14, and will include a lecture/presentation at 2:10 p.m. in room UC 416 of the Baker Center and a poetry reading at 5:30 p.m. in room UC 272 of the Baker Center.
Writer, naturalist and activist Ray is author of four books of literary nonfiction and a collection of nature poetry. She is on the faculty of Chatham University’s low-residency MFA program and is a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow. She holds an MFA from the University of Montana, and in 2007 was awarded an honorary doctorate from Unity College in Maine.
Ray has won a Southern Booksellers Award for Poetry 2011, Southeastern Booksellers Award for Nonfiction 1999, an American Book Award 2000, the Southern Environmental Law Center 2000 Award for Outstanding Writing, and a Southern Book Critics Circle Award 2000. Her “Ecology of a Cracker Childhood” was a New York Times Notable Book and was chosen as the Book All Georgians Should Read.
Ray attempts to live a simple, sustainable life on a farm in southern Georgia with her husband, Raven Waters. Ray is an organic gardener, seedsaver, tender of farm animals, and slow-food cook. She lectures widely on nature, community, agriculture, wildness, sustainability and the politics of wholeness.

Clayton Nonprofit Forum, Nov. 14
Sponsored by Clayton State University, the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, Clayton Fund, and the Georgia Center for Nonprofits, the Clayton Nonprofit Forum is designed to bring together community of nonprofit leaders in Clayton County to gain knowledge, network, and develop solutions to address community needs.
The forum will be held on Thursday, Nov.14, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in room CE 101 of the Harry S. Downs Center. Registration is $35 per person, and is limited to two people per organization.
What Will Nonprofits Learn?
STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS: In a current economic climate where available resources are tight and the need for services are growing, nonprofits have to look at different ways of delivering on their mission with the “Big Picture” in mind. The keynote speaker, Bill Bolling, will address the critical need for strategic partnerships within the nonprofit sector to help nonprofits achieve more and improve long term sustainability. Bolling is founder and executive director of the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
EFFECTIVE FUNDRAISING: This workshop will provide nonprofits with knowledge, tools and tips on how to adjust current fundraising models to not only be more effective but to also expend your donor base.
BUILDING A STRONG BOARD: A strong board is key for nonprofit organizations to be successful, and to maximize impact. Learn how to build a strong base of support and strengthen organizational effectiveness through your board.
HOW TO GET A GRANT FROM THE CLAYTON FUND: This workshop will provide valuable information and direction regarding the upcoming 2014 Clayton Fund grant cycle. It includes discussion of the overall process, eligibility guidelines, and completing the on-line application and timeline. In addition, the Clayton State Library now contains books and databases of the Foundation Center Library which will greatly aid in the search for grant money.

Clayton State University Ninth Annual Philosophy in Society Lecture: “Ethics and Immigration Reform in the U.S.,” Nov. 18
Clayton State’s Philosophy faculty and the Department of Humanities invite the University community to the Ninth Annual Philosophy in Society lecture. This year we are happy to welcome Professor David T. Ritchie.
Ritchie is a professor of Law and Philosophy at the Mercer University School of Law, Ethics Fellow of the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs, Senior Scholar of the Brazil Institute at Mercer, and a Macau University of Science and Technology Distinguished Fellow. His talk, Ethics and Immigration Reform in the U.S., speaks to the ethical implications of restrictive immigration policies.
The Ninth Annual Philosophy in Society lecture will be held on Monday, Nov.18, from 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. in room UC 267 of the James M. Baker University Center. This event is free and open to the general public.
Budget Managers' Handbook Training, Nov. 21
The Budget Office will soon be rolling out a new Budget Managers’ Handbook. This handbook will have sections associated with all areas of business functions to help you in processing your business transactions throughout the year. Therefore, we will be offering the annual Budget Management Training course. This training will include the normal budgetary report training, but in addition to that it will also introduce the other sections in the Budget Managers’ Handbook.
For those new to the budget management area on campus this year, this training will show you the reports you will need to submit on a quarterly basis and how to monitor your budget throughout the year. The budget portion of this training that is provided is also located at the link below as a PowerPoint presentation. It gives you a step by step process along with screen shots of how to run each report you will need to run in PeopleSoft.

Clayton State University professors Dr. Christina Howell, performing the role of Despina, and Dr. Kurt-Alexander Zeller, director, are both involved in Peach State Opera's upcoming performance of Mozart's Cosi fan tutte, being performed locally at the Avondate First Baptist Church, 47 Covington Rd., Avondale Estates, Ga., at 3 p.m. on Jan. 11, 2014.

How to get Around the Science Building Construction
Construction of the new science building on campus will begin on or about Nov. 8, 2013. The site of the construction will be the areas currently occupied by the faculty/staff parking lot (across from the LAB) and parking lot F. However, part of parking lot F will be restored after completion of the construction.
Here is a summary of the major impacts and changes to campus parking lots and roadways during the construction, and, even if you’re not one of those people to whom a picture is worth a thousand words, here’s a link to the campus map that also illustrates the changes…
Parking lot impacts
· A section of parking lot D will be designated for faculty/staff parking only to accommodate for those parking spaces affected by the construction.
· The disability parking row that is currently in the faculty/staff parking lot will be relocated to the D lot.
· Parking lot F will be closed for construction use only. Additional construction vehicles will park along the fence line in lot L near the tennis courts.
· A section of parking lot G will be designated for student parking only to accommodate for those parking spaces affected by the construction.
· Parking will remain available in lot E for faculty, staff, and students.
· Caldwell Drive will be closed from public use for incoming traffic just past the first entrance to parking lot D (across from Arts and Sciences Building). Traffic will be detoured through lot D at that point.
· Caldwell Drive will also be closed from public use for outgoing traffic from the G and H lots. All traffic to and from lots G and H must use Snelling Drive.
We apologize in advance for any inconvenience caused by the construction of the science building, but with any new development, some disruption is unavoidable. However, we always try to minimize the impact on daily life as much as possible.

What is our QEP going to be?
A QEP is a description of how we (as a University) will be improving some aspect of student learning over a five year (and longer) span.
The focus of our QEP is: “Student engagement through community projects that enhance learning and foster real-world success.” We will be incorporating community engagement into our courses through projects that are to be linked to course content and objectives. Students will have an opportunity to directly apply what they are learning in a way to benefit a local community group or organization.

· Attend the Jive & Thrive Benefits Fair, Nov. 14. Meet the benefit vendors and ask questions about your plans and options.
· Enroll. Get the coverage you want for 2014. Between Monday, Nov. 11, and Friday, Nov. 22, log on to the Employee Self Service System at http://portal.adp.com, then select the Benefits tab. If you have never registered, click First Time User Register Here. Your pass code is USG-6775. Follow the prompts indicated on each page.
· Certify your tobacco use status. During enrollment, certify the tobacco use status for you and your dependents age 18+ covered by a USG healthcare plan.
2014 SCCP Giving Campaign
Every year employees across the state demonstrate their compassion and generosity through the official workplace giving campaign for state employees and the University System of Georgia. Our 2014 State Charitable Contributions Program (SCCP) Annual Campaign will run through November 30, 2013. During the campaign, you will learn more about how we can address critical needs in Georgia, across the nation, and around the world by giving to the SCCP.
As always, you have the ability to direct donations to your favorite charities. Again this year, contributions can be designated to the Clayton State University Foundation, charity code 187000, to fund student scholarships and other activities supporting the University mission.
It’s quick and easy to give in three simple steps. Employees may also submit paper pledge forms to the agency campaign coordinator, Vickie Smith.
1. LOGIN at www.giveattheoffice.org/_sccp. Click LOGIN and then enter your username and password from last year; or click “I am a first time donor” to sign up by choosing your own username and password; or “I forgot my login or password” to recover your information. New donors do not have pre-assigned usernames and passwords.
2. CHOOSE how much you want to give in either a one-time gift or through payroll deduction. Online donations for payroll deduction will be validated through a separate confirmation email after the pledge has been processed (within 3 days).
3. SELECT CHARITIES to distribute your donation. $1 minimum is required per charity/per paycheck.
2013 Required Employee Training
It’s that time of the year for all faculty and staff to complete training required by Clayton State University, Board of Regents, and the State of Georgia.
The Right to Know (RTK), Ethics, Security Awareness, Campus Vehicle Use and Sexually Harassment courses must all be completed on an annual basis. During this time period, we ask that you also take a moment to review the updated Clayton State University Employee Handbook and complete a new Employee Handbook Acknowledgement Form. The signed Acknowledgement Form and five required courses should be completed by Dec. 1, 2013.
Here are the instructions to access and complete these trainings:
· Use your current Clayton State University user name and password to log into Employee Training.
· Review the Employee Handbook – Complete the Employee Acknowledgement Form and forward to HR.
· Required Trainings
o Right to Know (RTK) – At the end of the session, enter the requested information and submit.
o Ethics – Presentation, Assessment and Compliance Agreement
§ Basic – New Faculty/Staff
§ Refresher 2011 – Faculty/Staff active as of Dec. 31, 2010
o Security Awareness – Review the presentation and complete the assessment.
o Campus Vehicle Use Training – Review the videos, complete assessments, and forward the Acknowledgement Form to HR
o Sexual Harassment – Review the policy, responsibilities, and video content, then take the assessment/quiz.

First Lego League Volunteers Needed
Many of you have expressed interest in helping Clayton State University Host the 2013 First Lego League Super Regionals on Jan. 11, 2014. The event will be held in Clayton State University's University Center again and it is an all-day event.
Below, you will find two websites that can give you a great deal of information on this year's topic "Nature's Fury," how the topic will be integrated into this season, and Georgia's calendar regarding the season.
Some of you have volunteered before, so you know how much effort and preparation is required to host the event well. We will need a plethora of volunteers this year and help in fundraising and advertising. We have a great set of sub-topic leaders returning to get us moving forward, but there is plenty of work to do.
We hope to start subcommittee meetings in October and offering judge/referee trainings in November in preparation. Attached is a Doodle poll to assist in helping us put persons in volunteer areas that meet their interests. We hope that this will simplify the scheduling process by allowing the separate subcommittees to set meeting schedules once the subs are identified.
