Clayton State Homecoming 2013 to be Highlighted by Parade, Basketball Doubleheader, Feb. 9
Clayton State University’s annual Homecoming, where both students and alumni will gather to celebrate their dreams made real, is this week. This year’s event, which will run from Monday, Feb. 4 to Saturday, Feb. 9, will be highlighted by the return of the Clayton State Homecoming Parade and a basketball doubleheader against Montevallo University. Also among the “Don’t Miss” events will be a 5K race and the Annual Alumni Breakfast – all on Saturday.
Various student-related activities will take place early in the week – Clayton State Idol (Feb. 4), the Annual Student Choice Awards (Feb. 5), a Hump Day Party and a faculty/student basketball game (athletic trainer John Zubal promises to stand by for that one) on Feb. 6, a Homecoming Step Show (Feb. 7) and the Homecoming Pep Rally and Bonfire on Friday, Feb. 8, at noon at the Lawson Amphitheater. In case of rain, the Pep Rally (but not the bonfire…fire laws, you know) will be held in the Commons area of the James M. Baker University Center
Even though the bonfire will be the day before, Homecoming will really get hot on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. with the 5K Run/Walk, “Run Clayton State.” The race will run entirely on the University’s campus, starting and finishing in front of the Harry S. Downs Center. Actually, check-in for the race will begin at 7:45 a.m. in front of the Downs Center with the race beginning at 9 a.m. All runners will receive a T-shirt and age group winners will be recognized with awards. A special grand prize will be awarded to the top female and male winners.
As an added bonus, the race will also include admission to come-one, come-all Annual Alumni Breakfast, which starts at 9:30 a.m., and runs to 11 a.m., also at the Harry S. Downs Center.
At the end of the breakfast, the Homecoming Parade will return for the first time since the fall of 2006. This year’s parade will be a first, as the parade will not be held on campus, but will start (at 11 a.m.) at the Morrow Municipal Complex and will run on Jonesboro Road to Clayton State Boulevard before turning on campus. Morrow Police will be shutting down a portion of Jonesboro Road for the parade. The northbound lanes of Jonesboro Road will be diverted at Adamson Parkway. The northbound lanes from Adamson Parkway to Clayton State Boulevard will be shut down to vehicular traffic for the parade. The time frame of the closure will be from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The parade will be followed by the Tailgate/Homecoming Festival, which will run from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., in the circle in front of the Athletics & Fitness Center. That’s a warm-up for a couple of high-level basketball games, which are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. In the first game, the Clayton State women, the 2011 NCAA Division II national champions and currently ranked third in the nation, will take on Montevallo. In the second game, the 2012 NCAA Division II runner-up Montevallo men will take on the Lakers in a 5:30 p.m. start. The men’s game will include the crowning of the Homecoming king and queen at halftime.

Nessie a No-Show, Loch Stands-In
Although Pat Keane, administrative assistant in the Clayton State Athletic Department, invited the most famous inhabitant of Loch Ness to visit the Clayton State campus this week during her visit to Scotland last year, the notoriously reclusive Nessie was a no-show over the weekend.
Undaunted, Clayton State’s own Loch was out on Clayton State Boulevard this morning, filling in for Nessie and leaving an unmistakable trail down Clayton State to the Athletics & fitness Center, site of Saturday’s Tailgating Festival and basketball doubleheader against Montevallo University.

Clayton State Idol, Feb. 4
The annual Clayton State Idol competition will kick-off the University’s 2013 Homecoming on Monday, Feb. 4.
Sponsored by the Office of Orientation & New Student Programs, Clayton State Idol will be held in the ballroom of the Student Activities Center from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. as Clayton State students show off their vocal talent in competition to become the next Clayton State Idol.
The winner will be voted on by the audience members through text voting. Tickets are available to be purchased in the Office of Orientation & New Student Programs, room 218 of the Clayton State Student Center. Tickets are $5 and will also be sold at the door to the general public.
Homecoming Step Show, Feb. 7
The 2013 Homecoming Step Show will be held on Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m., in the Athletics & Fitness Center. Doors open at 6:15 p.m.
Clayton State students/Greeks pay $5 in advance, and $7 at the door. Non-Clayton State students pay $8 in advance. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Run Clayton State 5K Run/Walk, Feb. 9
The Clayton State Department of Athletics and the Atlanta Southside Runners, a local running club, will team up to hold the second 5K Run/Walk, “Run Clayton State.”
The race, which will take place in conjunction with Clayton State’s Homecoming festivities, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9, and will run entirely on the University’s campus, starting and finishing in front of the Harry S. Downs Center.
Check-in for the race will begin at 7:45 a.m. in front of the Downs Center with the race beginning at 9 a.m. All runners will receive a T-shirt and age group winners will be recognized with awards. A special grand prize will be awarded to the top female and male winners. The race will also include admission to the Annual Alumni Breakfast, which starts at 9:30 a.m., also at the Harry S. Downs Center.
In addition, participants will receive complimentary tickets to the Saturday afternoon’s NCAA Division II women’s and men’s basketball games at Clayton State’s Athletics & Fitness Center. Clayton State’s women’s team will play Montevallo at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the men’s game against Montevallo at 5:30 p.m.
The entry fee for the race is $15 per person with the registration fee increasing after Feb. 6 to $20 per person. The race day entry fee is $25. A family rate (minimum of three, maximum of six participants) is also available. The family rate is $40 and increases to $55 after Feb. 6. The race day family rate is $75. To be guaranteed a race T-shirt, participants must be registered by Feb. 1.

Recruitment and Admissions Schedules Virtual Open House, Feb. 7
The Clayton State University Office of Recruitment and Admissions’ next Virtual Open House is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 7, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
According to Associate Director, Recruitment and Marketing Penny Brooks, the Virtual Open House will have five virtual booths with staff providing chat opportunities for participants throughout the event. Prospective students, their family members, and others will be able to click into the booths and receive answers to their questions in real time. The booths are:

There will also be live webcasts scheduled throughout the event. From 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Clayton State faculty members will speak about their major programs, academic opportunities available at Clayton State, and future career options. From 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., admissions staff will discuss Clayton State in general and admissions requirements and policies in particular. Participants will be able to text questions to the presenters and get their answers in real time.
Teacher Education Middle Level Education Information Session, Feb. 7
The Clayton State University Department of Teacher Education has announced two new information sessions for students seeking information about Clayton State’s Middle Level Education degree program.
Interested individuals are invited to attend the Information Sessions on Thursday, Feb. 7 and Tuesday, Apr. 9. Faculty will host a one-hour dialogue on the nature of the programs, admission criteria, course scheduling, and other items of interest to prospective students, allowing them to discover how to make their dreams real — what it takes to earn a degree in teacher education.
The Feb. 7 session will take place in the Arts & Science Building, room G-227, from 4 p.m. until 5 p.m. The Apr. 9 sessions will be in the same building and room, from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m.

Second Amendment Rights New York Times Talk, Feb. 8

continues on Friday, Feb. 8, with a New York Times Talk that also continues the debate on the day’s most controversial subject – gun control.
The talk will be facilitated by Herbert Adams, J.D., and will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in room UC267 of the James M. Baker University Center. The title of the talk is, “Second Amendment Rights and Heller Case: Strict Constructivism or Judicial Activism?”

Recreation & Wellness to Host AFAA’s APEX Event, Feb. 8 to Feb. 10
The Clayton State University Department of Recreation & Wellness is proud to host the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America’s (AFAA) semi-annual APEX event in the University’s Student Activities Center from Feb. 8 to Feb. 10, 2013.
During APEX, AFAA, the world's largest fitness and TeleFitness® educator, offers certifications and workshops in multiple cities for the special price of only $99 per day, per program. The training is targeted to primary group exercise instructor and kickboxing instructors seeking certification for the first time, or renewing a certification.
The primary group exercise instructor certifications will take place on Friday, Feb. 8, and Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, while the kickboxing instructor certification will take place on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013.

Free Tax Assistance from College of Business Accounting Students, Feb. 9
Accounting students from Clayton State University will once again be participating in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, hosted by the University’s College of Business.
This free service will be offered at the College of Business on the following Saturdays: Feb. 9, Feb. 16, Feb. 23, Mar. 16, and Mar. 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Taxpayers will be assisted on a first come, first serve basis.

No More Winter of Discontent

2013 Changes to Paycheck Calculations
Some employees may notice variations to their January, 2013 paychecks due to some changes that were effective on Jan. 1, 2013. Social Security Tax Withholding
In 2011, the Federal Government lowered Social Security tax withholding rates temporarily by 2 percent. This was offered as temporary relief to families during the worst of the recession.
The reduced rate for employee Social Security taxes that was in effect for 2011 and 2012 has now expired. The employee Social Security tax rate will return to 6.2 percent for 2013 wages up to the taxable wage limit of $113,700. Employees will now contribute 2 percent more with each paycheck to fund Social Security. Consequently, employees’ net pay under the taxable wage limit will decrease accordingly.
Federal Income Tax Withholding
The American Taxpayer Relief Act effectively maintains the reduced income tax rates adopted in 2001 and 2003 for individuals earning up to $400,000 and families earning less than $450,000. Income above those levels will be taxed at 39.6 percent, up from 35 percent. The expanded 15 percent bracket for joint filers, commonly referred to as the marriage penalty relief, has also been extended.
Very few employees will be impacted by these changes.
State Tax Withholding
Georgia has not announced any significant changes to employee’s tax withholdings for the State of Georgia.
Teachers Retirement System (operates on fiscal year)
There are no changes effective Jan. 1, 2013. The employee contribution rate increased to 6.00 percent back on July 1, 2012.
Optional Retirement Plan (operates on calendar year)
Effective Jan. 1, 2013, the employee contribution rate increased to 6.00 percent.
2013 Benefits Enrollment
Many voluntary benefits election changes go into effect on Jan. 1, 2013. These selections can in some cases impact some tax withholding and net pay.
New Purchasing Limits for Procurement Services
This fall the Department of Administrative Services (DOAS) revised the Georgia Procurement Manual to implement a change in state law that allowed State Purchasing Division to increase the competitive bid threshold from $5,000 to $25,000. Several state entities had been lobbying for an increase in the amount for some time.
This change will enhance our opportunity to do business with local small business owners, as well as continue to receive the quality service and the best competitive pricing available. Clayton State’s Procurement Services has created new guidelines that explain the change and outline the new purchasing limits. We hope this information will help curtail the risk associated with the increase and provide guidelines to make the purchasing experience less complex and more efficient.
Please note, in order to implement the increase in the competitive bid threshold, Procurement Services is introducing the Bid Threshold Checklist. The Checklist must be completed every time a Purchase Requisition between $5,000 and $24,999 is submitted to Procurement Services along with a minimum of three quotes. The Checklist will allow us to compare all three quotes on one form, as well as to ensure that all end-users are comparing the same information within the requested quotes.
Some of the categories listed on the form are quantity, price, warranty, time frame of completion and brand. However, you may add additional headings to suite your purchasing needs. For instance, you may need to compare installation or delivery cost.
The New Purchasing Limits and the Checklist are available from Procurement Services. However, each Budget Manager will receive a hard copy in the mail within three to five business days and we have scheduled Procurement training for Feb. 27, so mark your calendars. You will receive additional information in the upcoming week as to the time and place of the training.

Outdoor Adventure Information
Sweetwater Creek State Park is a peaceful tract of wilderness only minutes from downtown Atlanta. A wooded trail follows the stream to the ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company, a textile mill burned during the Civil War. Beyond the mill, the trail climbs rocky bluffs to provide views of the beautiful rapids below.

Rock Climbing / Bouldering

The Spring 2013 Visiting Writer’s Reading Series will begin on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m., in room L-200 of the Library, featuring young adult fiction author Terra McVoy.

SBDC’s Starting a Business Workshop will be held in the Natural & Behavioral Sciences Building, room 139, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Tuesday, Feb. 12. If you are considering starting a small business, and want to make your dream real, this workshop is a crucial first step.

CARE & Majors Fair for Clayton State Students, Feb. 13
The Enrollment Management Division of Clayton State University will host a CARE & Majors Fair for Clayton State students on Wednesday, Feb. 13.
The CARE & Majors Fair will run from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Main Street on the second floor of the James M. Baker University Center. This event is only for Clayton State students.
The purpose of the fair is for Clayton State students to rediscover campus programs and services that support their success. The fair occurs the week after Homecoming to help students reflect on college goals, hopefully after meeting Clayton State alumni at the various Homecoming events.

“A Valentine Cabaret,” Feb. 15
The Clayton State University Center for Continuing Education will present “A Valentine Cabaret” with Elise Witt and Mick Kinney on Friday, Feb. 15, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., in the Harry S. Downs Center on the Clayton State main campus in Morrow.
It’ll be special evening on the shores of Clayton State’s Swan Lake, celebrating Valentine’s Day with music, dancing, laughter and a coffee and dessert bar, and featuring Kinney’s humor and piano playing with Witt’s voice and world music repertoire. Witt, who can sing in seven languages, has previously appeared on the Clayton State campus with the ASO in world-famous Spivey Hall. She has also performed in the Kennedy Center.

Invasive Plant Pull at Reynolds Nature Preserve, Feb. 16
Volunteers are needed for an invasive plant pull at the Reynolds Nature Preserve on Saturday, Feb. 16, from 9:45 a.m. to noon. The rain date is Saturday, Feb. 23.
Reynolds Nature Preserve continues to be threatened by invasive exotic plants such as kudzu, privet and English Ivy. If we wish Reynolds Nature Preserve to have a future as a native plant area, these invasive foreign plants need to be controlled.
If you visit Reynolds before this date, ask staff to tell you about the invasive plants there and their work in trying to control them. If you have questions about the workday, call Reynolds Nature Center at (770) 603-4188. You can also call the Nature Center to register for the workday, or join at last minute without registering if you find you are able to come Saturday morning.

The Sixth Ogden/N.Y. Times First Amendment Essay Contest, Entries Due, Feb. 22
The Fifth Annual Civic Engagement Undergraduate and Graduate Student Research Conference at Clayton State University announces The Sixth Ogden/N.Y. Times First Amendment Essay Contest.
This is the sixth time that an award will be presented to a currently enrolled student for literary achievement in the area of First Amendment rights, and free speech, in particular. The award is named in memory of James H. Ogden, Jr., late husband of Professor Judith Stilz Ogden, who was a lifelong supporter of First Amendment Rights. It is underwritten by the N.Y. Times
Any currently enrolled undergraduate student is eligible. The authors of the first and second place papers will be required to present their papers at The Fifth Annual Civic Engagement Undergraduate and Graduate Student Research Conference on Mar. 22, at the National Archives at Atlanta.
This year’s topic is: “Should Corporations Have a Constitutional Right to Political Speech?”
The essay requirements:
Student submissions are limited to 2000 words, with a minimum of 750 words required.
Students should follow MLA or APA writing guidelines.
The Internet should not be the only source for the essay.
Wikipedia should not be used.

The essay must be solely the work of the entrant.
Students must submit an electronic copy of the essay. It should be sent via email, and the email message should include the student’s name, address, phone number(s), and email address, to Professor Judith Ogden, 2013 Project Chair, College of Business, JudithOgden@clayton.edu.
Information about the student should appear nowhere on the essay, or the essay will be disqualified. The essay should be typed and double-spaced using 12-point font. Entries must be received by 5 p.m., E.S.T., on Feb. 22.
CIMS to Host Regional MathCounts Competition, Feb. 23
The College of Information and Mathematical Sciences (CIMS) at Clayton State University is hosting the MathCounts state regional competition on Saturday, Feb. 23.
The event is run by the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers, with Clayton State as the site host and Dr. Catherine Matos, associate professor of Mathematics the Clayton State coordinator. Matos expects to have about 100 middle schoolers for the competition, plus their team coaches and parents. In addition to the competition, Associate Director of Recruitment and Marketing for the Clayton State Office of Recruitment and Admissions Penny Brooks will be speaking to the students.
Nontraditional Student Organization Black History Health Awareness Week Moved to Feb. 25 to Feb. 28
Due to a conflict with Clayton State University’s annual Homecoming celebration, the Clayton State Nontraditional Student Organization’s (NTSO) recognition of Black History Health Awareness Week has been moved to the week of Feb. 25 to Feb. 28.
NTSO will be raising awareness of health issues that plague the African-American population by providing preventative information from the various Clayton State departments and student organizations.
The NTSO will have an information table set up from Monday, Feb. 25, through Thursday, Feb. 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Main Street on the second floor of the James M. Baker University Center.
Clayton State Academic Research Conference, Mar. 15
Clayton State’s Academic Research Conference will be held on Friday, Mar. 15 from noon to 4 p.m. Research. Made Real. Here’s your chance to learn about research from all academic departments on campus as presented by the University’s exceptional students. All students are welcome to apply.
Poster presentations will be made from noon to 2 p.m. in the James M. Baker University Center. Oral presentations will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Lecture Hall.

The Fifth Annual Civic Engagement Undergraduate and Graduate Student Research Conference, “Getting Engaged: The Realities of Pursuing Your Passion for Civic Engagement” will be held at the National Archives at Atlanta on Friday, Mar. 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Students in the University System of Georgia are encouraged to develop an individually compelling sense of social and civic responsibility, community leadership and service to society. To support this goal, Clayton State University and the National Archives at Atlanta announce the Fifth Annual Student Research Conference on Civic Engagement.
Undergraduate and graduate students attending USG schools are invited to submit papers and panel-session proposals on the broad subject of civic engagement beyond the vote.
