Bed Bath & Beyond®, the destination for college shopping, is packing up, hitting the road, and coming to Clayton State University – with an on-campus Bookstore Pop Up Shop filled with last minute college essentials and an array of items.
After unpacking, students may realize they have forgotten important items for their dorm rooms or off-campus apartments. The on-campus Loch Shop Pop Up Shop is packed with easy, fun and convenient solutions for these last minute needs. Students won’t need to step off campus to get the things they need to make their new residences feel like home. The shop will include everything from storage solutions, décor accessories, and bedding.
There will also be a Bed, Bath & Beyond Tent Sale at Laker Hall from Aug. 7 to Aug. 20.
Congressman Scott’s Health Fair, Aug. 17
Congressman David Scott’s Ninth Annual 13th Congressional District Health Fair will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17. This event will mark close to a decade of partnership with Metropolitan Atlanta’s leading healthcare professionals to provide free health exams and information for my constituents.
This year’s event will take place at Mundy’s Mill High School, which is located at 9652 Fayetteville Rd., Jonesboro, Ga., and will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Worldwide Travel Alert
The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens to the continued potential for terrorist attacks, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, and possibly occurring in or emanating from the Arabian Peninsula. Current information suggests that al-Qa’ida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August. This Travel Alert expires on Aug. 31, 2013.
Terrorists may elect to use a variety of means and weapons and target both official and private interests. U.S. citizens are reminded of the potential for terrorists to attack public transportation systems and other tourist infrastructure. Terrorists have targeted and attacked subway and rail systems, as well as aviation and maritime services. U.S. citizens should take every precaution to be aware of their surroundings and to adopt appropriate safety measures to protect themselves when traveling.
We continue to work closely with other nations on the threat from international terrorism, including from al-Qa'ida. Information is routinely shared between the U.S. and our key partners in order to disrupt terrorist plotting, identify and take action against potential operatives, and strengthen our defenses against potential threats.
We recommend U.S. citizens register their travel plans with the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy through the State Department's travel registration website. We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens Traveling abroad enroll in the Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don't have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

Clayton State University’s Eighth Annual New Student Convocation is scheduled to take place on Friday, Aug. 9, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., in Spivey Hall. A brunch reception will immediately follow the ceremony.
Clayton State faculty and staff who participate in the procession portion of the ceremony are kindly requested to wear their academic regalia. The New Student Convocation is an exciting time when faculty, staff and all new students assemble to mark the beginning of a new academic year. New Student Convocation is a formal ceremony intended to inspire, motivate and officially welcome our new students. President Thomas J. "Tim" Hynes, Jr. will offer encouraging words to incoming students and the campus community during the ceremony.

ASSEMBLY INFORMATION
The faculty marshal and deputy marshal will assemble the faculty in the Spivey Hall Green Room hallway in processional order. A limited number of faculty (approx. 110) will sit on stage; the remaining participating faculty will sit in designated seating towards the rear of the Hall. (Refer to posted signs for line-up designations.)
Just prior to convocation start time (approx. 9:50 a.m.), the faculty processional will proceed into the Hall. Due to the possible high number of student participants for the ceremony, an overflow room has been reserved for guests (students, non-processional faculty and staff) if seating capacity is reached at Spivey Hall for the ceremony. The ceremony will be video-streamed in the overflow location. Volunteers will be available to assist guests from Spivey Hall to the overflow location.

Residence Life Schedules Annual Move-In Day, Aug. 7
One of the highlights of the Clayton State University year is coming up next week. Wednesday, Aug. 7 is “Move-In” Day at Laker Hall.
The University’s freshman housing, Laker Hall is expecting a full house for the 2013 fall semester. Move-In Day, the day when the University’s newest freshmen come to campus and Laker Hall, is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 7, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. As has been the case since Laker Hall opened in 2008, Clayton State Residence Life is calling for volunteers among the University’s faculty, staff and students to help move in the new freshman students.
“Volunteers will be helping to welcome students and parents, providing directions to local businesses for last-minute shopping, and most importantly helping unload cars and carry items to the rooms of residents,” explains Danielle R. Sims, residence hall manager for Laker Hall. “We are expecting a full house this year so it’s an exciting time in Residence Life!”

Ask Me! Returns to Clayton State, Aug. 9
Ask Me! — sponsored by the Clayton State University Customer Service Program and the Clayton State Office of Auxiliary Services — will once again be making dreams real and helping to welcome newcomers to the University for the start of the fall semester.
The dates for next month’s Ask Me! are; Friday, Aug. 9, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, Aug. 12, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Tuesday, Aug. 13, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Monday and Tuesday Ask Me! programs will center around a tent on the Clayton State Quad. In case of rain, Ask Me! will move inside to Main Street in the James M. Baker University Center.
Ask Me! is designed to help welcome newcomers and returners to the University during the start of each semester. The program features welcome tents and student volunteers wearing bright orange Ask Me! T-shirts. Volunteers are positioned in high-traffic areas all around the campus to help welcome students, answer questions, and to point people in the right direction.
Volunteers for Ask Me! will earn $25 “Bookstore Bucks” for each four-hour shift (limit two shifts per volunteer). To be eligible, a student must have earned at least 15 credit hours at Clayton State University and must attend one of two 30-minute training sessions.

The Party for Good will be held on Friday, Aug. 9, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., in SAC Ballrooms and on the SAC Green. There will be inflatables and outdoor activities on the SAC Green and community projects facilitated by student organizations in the SAC Ballrooms.
Dining Services Resumes Normal Hours on Saturday, Aug. 10
During the semester break, Jazzman’s and Subconnection will be open to serve you. Beginning Saturday, Aug. 10, all dining locations will resume their normal fall semester operating schedule. The Lakeside Dining Hall will resume normal service for employees on Monday, Aug. 12.

Southern Crescent Symphony Orchestra Seeking Strings Players
The Southern Crescent Symphony Orchestra is currently seeking musicians for all string positions. Auditions for the orchestra's 2013-2014 season will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 13, between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. in the Clayton State University Music Building.
The audition will include a solo of your choice, sight reading and an interview concerning your playing background.

The Southern Crescent Symphony Orchestra is a community orchestra devoted to meeting the cultural needs of audiences and performers in the Southern Crescent area of Metro Atlanta. Members of the orchestra include professional musicians, music educators and amateur musicians, all of whom strive to utilize their full potential in presenting a quality musical product. For the coming season the orchestra will partner with the Clayton State University Orchestra for performances in Spivey Hall and the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church.The SCSO is conducted by Bell, Carl Rieke, and Michael Puckett. SBDC to Hold Starting a Business Workshop in Griffin, Aug. 14
The Clayton State University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will be holding a “Starting a Business Workshop” on Wednesday, Aug. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Griffin-Spalding Chamber of Commerce/Griffin Welcome Center, 143 N. Hill St., Griffin, Ga.
The cost of the workshop is $69 per person, with a 50 percent discount for current Clayton State students, faculty and staff, who should contact Heather Chaney for discount code. Also, there is 50 percent off each additional person who registers with an individual when the first person pays the full fee of $69 (discounts cannot be combined).

SBDC Class on "Writing a Living Business Plan" Aug. 15
The Clayton State University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will be presenting a class on "Writing a Living Business Plan" on Thursday, Aug. 15.
The class will run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will be held in room G127 on the first floor of the Clayton State Arts & Sciences Building. The registration fee is $69 per person.
Topics for discussion during "Writing a Living Business Plan" will include:
Telling a compelling and provocative story;
Completing a SWOT analysis;
Setting goals and key performance indicators;
Compiling sections of the plan, including marketing, HR, financial, operational;
Calculating profit and loss projections, balance sheets, cash flow statements;
Finding sources and determining the cost of capital.
A sample business plan will be among the handouts provided with the class.

New Parking Permits
The parking permits/decals for the previous school year will expire on Wednesday July 31. New permits are currently available for pick up at the Department of Public Safety, with valid dates from Aug. 1, 2013 to July 31, 2014.
Faculty/staff will be issued the traditional blue colored permits. However, there are some changes to the student permits. Students living in Laker Hall will be issued gold colored permits and those living in Clayton Station will be issued green colored permits. All other students will be issued orange colored permits. However, student vehicles bearing any of these three colors may park in any areas designated for student parking.
SSC Call Center Creates Back to School Resources
In preparation for the upcoming return of the faculty, staff and students on campus, the SSC has created a Back to School Resources for institutions to use. We know this is a very busy time at the institutions and would like to provide a few tools to help.
The SSC will also extend business hours beginning Thursday, Aug. 1. The SSC Call Center will be available Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the exception of the Monday, Sept. 2 closure in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Normal business hours of Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., will resume on Monday, Sept. 9.

Georgia Security and Immigration and Compliance Act
In July 2013, the State of Georgia implemented a new requirement for the procurement of labor and services by Governmental Entities.
Going forward, Clayton State University Employees wishing to enter into a “contract” for the physical performance of services that exceeds $2,499.99 will need to verify the Contractor’s immigration status BEFORE the contract is signed and work begins.
This means before we issue certain POs, receive bids or quotes, or start contract negotiations-Procurement Services and/or Contract Administration must obtain the notarized Contract Affidavit from the contractor/vendor.

Clayton County Rotary Club Looking for Speakers
The Clayton County Rotary Club is looking for speakers for its meetings in October and November. The Rotary Club meets at Red Lobster on Tara Boulevard at noon each Wednesday.

New Federal Indirect Cost Rate Effective July 1
As of July 1, Clayton State University’s federally negotiated Facilities and Administrative (Indirect) cost rate is 35.3 percent of direct salaries and wages, including all fringe benefits. The University’s “off-campus” rate is 18.7 percent of the same salaries, wages and benefits base.
OFF-CAMPUS DEFINITION: For all activities performed in facilities not owned by the institution and to which rent is directly allocated to the project(s), the off-campus rate will apply. Grants or contracts will not be subject to more than one F&A cost rate. If more than 50 percent of a project is performed off-campus, the off-campus rate will apply to the entire project.
These rates are effective until June 30, 2015 or until renegotiated.
