Clayton State Library Compiles List of Government Shutdown’s Effect on Research and Information
One of the aspects of the current federal government shutdown that is effecting students as well as anyone else who needs to do research is that many online resources, including websites and databases run by federal agencies, are either unavailable or not being maintained.
As a service to both Clayton State University students, and the public, Clayton State Assessment & Marketing Librarian Erin L. Nagel has published a partial list of affected agencies often used in research, along with a list of alternative print and online sources that scholars and researchers can use in the meantime. Kara Mullen, head of the Library’s Electronic Resources and Services, also contributed significantly to the compilation of these resources, as she is most familiar with electronic collections. Both lists are on the Clayton State Library’s blog posting located at http://claytonstatelibrary.wordpress.com/2013/10/02/us-federal-government-shutdown-impacting-information-sources/.
Nagel notes that the list of affected information agencies is an impressive one; including most Library of Congress websites, the National Archives (the National Archives at Atlanta is located immediately adjacent to the Clayton State campus, thus directly affecting the University’s history and Masters of Archival Studies programs), the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the National Institutes of Health, PubMed, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and NASA.
The list of alternative resources on the Library’s blog includes those dealing with statistics related to health, population, labor, science, health, medical research, education research, agriculture research, and primary sources and archival research.
“This list will be updated as more information becomes (un)available,” notes Nagel.
Clayton State Women’s Soccer to Host Georgia College Saturday
The Clayton State women's soccer team will return home Saturday to the friendly confines of Laker Field for a Peach Belt Conference match against Georgia College.
Kickoff for the match will be 7 p.m. Admission to the match is $5, and children 12-under are admitted free. Clayton State students and faculty/staff are admitted free with their Laker Card. The match will stream live at http://www.ustream.tv/claytonstateathletics.
The Clayton State women's team enters tied atop the Peach Belt Conference standings with a 3-0 mark in league play. The Lakers are 6-3-1 overall and riding a five-game winning streak. Clayton State freshman Denisha Paskell leads the league in scoring with 10 goals on the season, while defender Saidhbh Collins leads the league in assists.
Jim Wood Speaker Series to Feature Panel of Clayton State University College of Business Alumni, Oct. 16
The College of Business’ Jim Wood Speaker Series has a new angle for October… featuring a panel of recent Clayton State business alumni, who will be sharing their experiences with the audience.

Clayton State Serving as Presenting Sponsor for Eighth Annual Showcase Clayton Business & Community Expo, Oct. 17
Clayton State University is serving as the presenting sponsor for the Clayton County Chamber of Commerce’s Eighth Annual Showcase Clayton Business & Community Expo.
The Expo, also known as “Showcase Clayton” will be held on Thursday, Oct. 17, from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro’s Recreation Outreach Center, 148 Church St., Jonesboro. A total of 68 exhibitors are currently signed up for Showcase Clayton, and an attendance in excess of 650 is expected for this free event.
While serving as the presenting sponsor for one of Clayton County’s highest-profile annual events, Clayton State is also providing student volunteers for the Expo through the University’s AmeriCorps program.
In addition to providing an opportunity for businesses to exhibit their products and services, Showcase Clayton is also an opportunity to network with the community and business leaders. And, it’s a family-friendly event that includes special entertainment just for children, food, door prizes provided by the exhibitors and festivities.
Expo activities will include, in addition to the exhibitors; secret booth scavenger hunt, a restaurant row featuring free food samples, promotion opportunities and new resources, free massages, prize drawings every hour, a 50/50 cash raffle, free health screenings, and children’s activities including face painting, balloon art and identification finger printing.

Degree Completion Event, Oct. 29
Enrollment Management and Academic Success is planning its second degree completion event to attract prospective students in the Clayton State service area who have earned college credit, but have not yet earned a degree. The pilot event was held in July. Of the 24 people in attendance, four are currently enrolled, and seven are scheduled to attend in the spring… a good start to reaching out to this population.

Clayton State Women’s Forum Announces Annual Auction, Chili Cook-off, Quilt Raffle, Nov. 7
The Clayton State Women’s Forum will be holding its Annual Auction, Chili Cook-off and Quilt Raffle on Thursday, Nov. 7.
The organization’s mission is to sustain a Women’s Forum Scholarship Fund in support of assisting students with general and emergency resources to aid in their successful completion of academic studies. Proceeds from all events go to the Scholarship Fund.

New Science Building --With Construction Comes Some Disruption
Construction of the new science building on campus will begin on or about Nov. 8, 2013. The site of the construction will be the areas currently occupied by the faculty/staff parking lot (across from the LAB) and parking lot F. However, part of parking lot F will be restored after completion of the construction.
Here is a summary of the major impacts and changes to campus parking lots and roadways during the construction:
Parking lot impacts ----
· A section of parking lot D will be designated for faculty/staff parking only to accommodate for those parking spaces affected by the construction.
· The disability parking row that is currently in the faculty/staff parking lot will be relocated to the D lot.
· Parking lot F will be closed for construction use only. Additional construction vehicles will park along the fence line in lot L near the tennis courts.
· A section of parking lot G will be designated for student parking only to accommodate for those parking spaces affected by the construction.
· Parking will remain available in lot E for faculty, staff, and students.
Roadway impacts ---
· Caldwell Drive will be closed from public use for incoming traffic just past the first entrance to parking lot D (across from Arts and Sciences Building). Traffic will be detoured through lot D at that point.
· Caldwell Drive will also be closed from public use for outgoing traffic from the G and H lots. All traffic to and from lots G and H must use Snelling Drive.
We apologize in advance for any inconvenience caused by the construction of the science building, but with any new development, some disruption is unavoidable. However, we always try to minimize the impact on daily life as much as possible.

Faculty and Staff Email Addresses to Change
On Oct. 14, OITS will change the official Clayton State University e-mail address suffix from @mail.clayton.edu to @clayton.edu.
@clayton.edu is so commonly used on business cards and publications, people may be surprised to find out that it is not the official suffix on the e-mail system.
Accounts will continue to have both suffixes, so both JohnDoe@clayton.edu
will continue to work. When you send e-mails, they will now be from JohnDoe@clayton.edu
This change could affect your ability to send e-mail to mailing lists which restrict messages based on the sender e-mail address. If so, you will need to follow the procedures for that mailing list to change your address to the new format. This will be different depending on the mailing list - it may be a web interface, a special e-mail address, or a manual process performed by the owner. This will not impact your ability to receive e-mails from mailing lists.
OITS will make the necessary changes to the Clayton State class mailing lists, so you will not need to take any actions to continue to communicate with your students.
Our Genealogy Group Meeting, Oct. 6
Our Genealogy Group will hold its next meeting on Sunday, Oct. 6, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., in the James M. Baker University Center at Clayton State University.

Fall 2013 Teacher Education Film Series, Oct. 8
The next presentation in the Fall 2013 Teacher Education Film Series will be “Temple Grandin,” on Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Arbor Hall Auditorium at Clayton State – East.
“Temple Grandin” paints a picture of a young woman’s perseverance and determination while struggling with the isolating challenges of autism at a time when it was still quite unknown.
The film chronicles Temple’s early diagnosis; her turbulent growth and development during her school years; the enduring support she received from her mother, aunt, and her science teacher; and her emergence as a woman with an innate sensitivity and understanding of animal behavior.
This visually inventive film offers insights into Grandin’s world, taking the audience inside her mind with a series of snapshot images that trace her self-perceptions and journey from childhood through young adulthood to the beginning of her career, and beyond.
Subsequent presentations will be on Oct. 28 (“Bully”), and Nov. 4 (“American Teacher”).
Clayton State/ Southern Crescent Symphony Orchestra Concert, Oct. 8
The Clayton State University Orchestra and the Southern Crescent Symphony Orchestra will be presenting a concert by French composers on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Spivey Hall.
The works to be performed are the Petite Suite by Debussy, the Symphony in D Minor by Franck and the Fanfare from La Peri by Dukas.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children over the age of six. Clayton State students, faculty and staff are admitted free. Tickets may be purchased through the Spivey Hall box office or at the door.
Fifth Annual Diversity and Multicultural Conference, Oct. 11
Clayton State’s Fifth Annual Diversity and Multicultural Conference will be held on Friday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the Student Activities Center Ballroom.
The Diversity and Multicultural Conference is a dynamic and interactive one-day development opportunity that gives participants the essential knowledge and strategies needed to lead and function in a globally complex society. SAC Water Shutoff, Oct. 14, Oct. 15
On Monday, Oct. 14 and Tuesday, Oct. 15, the water to the Student Activities Center (SAC) will be turned off.
The SAC will continue to operate as normal with the exception of no water will be available. This means the showers, toilets, sinks, and water fountains will all be offline for the duration of the outage.
The work being done is the final step in removing stained water from the SAC’s facility line. The SAC will remain open during this outage.

Budget Managers' Handbook Training, Oct. 15, Nov. 21
The Budget Office will soon be rolling out a new Budget Managers’ Handbook. This handbook will have sections associated with all areas of business functions to help you in processing your business transactions throughout the year. Therefore, we will be offering the annual Budget Management Training course. This training will include the normal budgetary report training, but in addition to that it will also introduce the other sections in the Budget Managers’ Handbook.
For those new to the budget management area on campus this year, this training will show you the reports you will need to submit on a quarterly basis and how to monitor your budget throughout the year. The budget portion of this training that is provided is also located at the link below as a PowerPoint presentation. It gives you a step by step process along with screen shots of how to run each report you will need to run in PeopleSoft.
We will be having two separate sessions of the same training course. The dates, times, and locations of those training sessions are as follows:

City of Morrow Fashionatta, Oct. 20
The City of Morrow’s Fashionatta event will be held on Sunday, Oct. 20 at Morrow Center Southlake Circle.
Not only will attendees be privy to the latest trends in clothing, hair and makeup, they will be able to network with people from all over the Southern Crescent. For 2013 men's clothing has been added.

Clayton State Holding Recycled Athletic Shoe Drive, Through Oct. 31
Do you have worn-out athletic shoes lying around? If so, you can donate them for recycling so they can have new life as a tennis court, a playground, or a basketball court.
The GoGreen student organization at Clayton State University has placed a collection bin outside the LakerCard Center on the first floor of the James M. Baker University Center for used athletic shoe donations between Oct. 1 and Oct. 31.
GoGreen will accept any athletic shoes and any brand, but only athletics shoes – nothing with metal, no sandals or flip-flops, no cleats or dress shoes, and no wet or damp shoes.

Producer and Recording Engineer Matt Forger to Lecture at Clayton State, Nov. 7
One of the hallmarks of a Clayton State University education is experiential learning — the opportunity to further one’s education, and the learning process, outside the classroom.
Clayton State’s Student Activities Center will be just such a site on Thursday, Nov. 7, when the Clayton Media & Entertainment Association (CMEA) hosts a special guest lecture by producer and recording engineer Matt Forger.
While the term “special” tends to be over-used, Clayton State Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Shawn Young says that this is one occasion that fits. After all, it is rare that students (and that includes high school students, students from other colleges and anyone else who wants to attend) get a chance to hear from someone who has worked with… Sir Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, Donna Summer, Patti Austin, Missing Persons, Michael McDonald, James Ingram, Siedah Garrett, Quincy Jones, Steven Spielberg, John Landis, George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, Giorgio Moroder, Larry John McNally, George Duke, Patrick O'Hearn, Gilberto Gil, Simon Lynge, Rod Temperton, Bruce Swedien and more than a few other giants in the recording and film industries.
Forger will be lecturing from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Student Activities Center (SAC). As noted, his presentation is free and open to the public. However, the ballroom only seats about 650, so it might be a good idea to come early.
Fall 2013 Visiting Writer’s Reading Series, Nov. 14
For this semester, the Visiting Writer’s Reading Series is trying something new… a large event featuring Janisse Ray.
The event is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 14, and will include a lecture/presentation at 2:10 p.m. in room UC 416 of the Baker Center and a poetry reading at 5:30 p.m. in room UC 272 of the Baker Center.
Writer, naturalist and activist Ray is author of four books of literary nonfiction and a collection of nature poetry. She is on the faculty of Chatham University’s low-residency MFA program and is a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow. She holds an MFA from the University of Montana, and in 2007 was awarded an honorary doctorate from Unity College in Maine.
Ray has won a Southern Booksellers Award for Poetry 2011, Southeastern Booksellers Award for Nonfiction 1999, an American Book Award 2000, the Southern Environmental Law Center 2000 Award for Outstanding Writing, and a Southern Book Critics Circle Award 2000. Her “Ecology of a Cracker Childhood” was a New York Times Notable Book and was chosen as the Book All Georgians Should Read.
Ray attempts to live a simple, sustainable life on a farm in southern Georgia with her husband, Raven Waters. Ray is an organic gardener, seedsaver, tender of farm animals, and slow-food cook. She lectures widely on nature, community, agriculture, wildness, sustainability and the politics of wholeness.

Library Supports “The Big Thank You”
The Clayton State Library is supporting “The Big Thank You,” an effort by a local radio station, to ensure that every U.S. service member stationed overseas receives a handwritten letter on Thanksgiving Day.
Help us say “Thank You” to our troops and send a little taste of home while they're away for the holiday. You can find writing supplies and a collection box in the Library near the bulletin board. (Look for Bruce the Goose). Just write a letter and place it in the box. We’ll take care of the rest. No envelopes or addresses are needed.
Annual Security Report Now Available
Annual Campus Security and Fire report as required by the U.S. Department of Education is now available from the Department of Public Safety.
This publication is prepared every fall and includes various campus policies and safety information, as well as the current and previous three years of reportable criminal and disciplinary statistics for specific criminal activity on campus property, non-campus property, and adjacent public property as defined by the federal requirements.
A copy of the report will also be posted on the Public Safety website at www.clayton.edu/publicsafety and copies may also be obtained by request to the Department of Public Safety.
We encourage all members of the campus community to take some time to review the report, as it contains much valuable information regarding the safety and security of our campus, as well as personal safety suggestions. After review, please contact our Department with any questions.

Clayton State Announces Plans to Start Athletic Hall of Fame
Clayton State recently kicked off 2013-14 athletic season, and it will be an extra special one in the history of Laker Athletics program.
In the athletic program’s 24th year of competition, Athletic Director Carl McAloose announces that Clayton State will start its Athletic Hall of Fame during the upcoming season with the first class of inductees planned for enshrinement in February of 2014.
“After speaking with many people associated with our program, we feel like it is time to start a Clayton State Athletics Hall of Fame,” says McAloose. “We’ve had hundreds of student-athletes along with many coaches, administrators and community members who have excelled at the highest levels, and we look forward to recognizing their achievements with such a lasting honor.”
Nominations for Hall of Fame inductees will be open to the public, beginning today via the Clayton State Athletics website. Along with an online nomination, the site also includes the criteria for nomination and the selection process.
From the nominations, a Hall of Fame committee, consisting of 12 members will select the inductees. The Committee consists of athletic department administrators/coaches, university faculty/ staff and community members.
The deadline for nominations will be Monday, Nov. 4. Plans are for the first Hall of Fame Class to be announced in January of 2014 and to be recognized at Homecoming festivities, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 15.

Affordable Care Act Health Insurance Marketplace Notice
Prior to Oct. 1, employees will be receiving a Health Insurance Marketplace communication in the mail from the University System of Georgia. Under the Affordable Care Act, the University System of Georgia is required to provide this notice to its employees. The notice will be mailed to all University System of Georgia employees. This includes all regular, temporary, faculty, staff, and student employees who receive a payroll check whether one-time or on a recurring basis, but does not include retirees who are working (or retirees in general).

The State of Georgia has opted not to operate a Health Insurance Marketplace, so individuals in Georgia choosing to enroll in health insurance through an Exchange will use the Federal Health Insurance Marketplace to enroll in coverage.
The University System of Georgia’s HSA Open Access POS plan meets the Affordability Requirement under the Affordable Care Act. Therefore, in general, University System of Georgia employees who are eligible for health insurance and therefore have access to this plan will not be eligible for a tax credit in 2014 through the Health Insurance Marketplace created under the Affordable Care Act.
Additional information regarding health insurance in 2014 will be provided during Open Enrollment (Nov. 11 to Nov. 22) and at the Fall Benefits Fair (Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the SAC). More information about these events will be provided very soon.
Buy a Meal Plan, Get a Free Meal… Are You Up for the Challenge?
It's back, but with a twist. To help introduce faculty and staff to Sodexo's new Mindful dining options in the Lakeside Dining Hall, we want you to take the Mindful Dining Challenge (MDC). The Challenge is to have 16 meals in the Dining Hall by Dec. 9 that contain at least one Mindful item* and get $10 in LakerBucks!
Here's how it works: Stop by the LakerCard Center between Sept. 23 and Oct. 4 and buy a meal plan. You will receive an additional meal for FREE and be signed up for the Challenge. You will also receive an MDC punch card. Each time you visit the Dining Hall and have at least one Mindful item, you will get your MDC card punched. After 16 punches, return your MDC card to the LakerCard Center and get $10 in LakerBucks added to your LakerCard!
For each meal with a Mindful item, you will get your card punched once.
*Mindful entrees and sides are identified by a heart-shaped apple icon on the menu. Also a salad or sandwich entree qualifies as a Mindful item.
Limit one additional free meal during the promotion. One punch card per person. One MDC card punch per meal. The Challenge ends Dec. 9, and completed punch cards must be returned to the LakerCard Center by Dec. 13.

Flu Shots Now Available
University Health Services is now offering the intradermal flu vaccine for this year. For more information on the efficacy of the intradermal injection please visit
The cost is $15 for students, $20 for faculty/staff and community.
The hours for flu vaccine are as follows; Monday – Thursday; 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday; 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

2013 Required Employee Training
It’s that time of the year for all faculty and staff to complete training required by Clayton State University, Board of Regents, and the State of Georgia.
The Right to Know (RTK), Ethics, Security Awareness, Campus Vehicle Use and Sexually Harassment courses must all be completed on an annual basis. During this time period, we ask that you also take a moment to review the updated Clayton State University Employee Handbook and complete a new Employee Handbook Acknowledgement Form. The signed Acknowledgement Form and five required courses should be completed by Dec. 1, 2013.
Here are the instructions to access and complete these trainings:
· Use your current Clayton State University user name and password to log into Employee Training.
· Review the Employee Handbook – Complete the Employee Acknowledgement Form and forward to HR.
· Required Trainings
o Right to Know (RTK) – At the end of the session, enter the requested information and submit.
o Ethics – Presentation, Assessment and Compliance Agreement
§ Basic – New Faculty/Staff
§ Refresher 2011 – Faculty/Staff active as of Dec. 31, 2010
o Security Awareness – Review the presentation and complete the assessment.
o Campus Vehicle Use Training – Review the videos, complete assessments, and forward the Acknowledgement Form to HR
o Sexual Harassment – Review the policy, responsibilities, and video content, then take the assessment/quiz.
