IT Analysis, Phase I -- Committee Report
On Jan. 20, 20-12, I asked a group of Clayton State faculty and staff to create a strategic plan and vision for technology at Clayton State University.
In less than 90 days, the committee has: a) reviewed documents from the Office of Information and Technology Services; b) analyzed the opinions of more than 1,200 students, and 200 faculty and staff regarding their perspectives of current technology; c) interviewed dozens more in focus groups to explore important themes. The analysis of this data can be found in a report located at:
. Let me take this chance to publically thank the committee for its great work to date, as well as for its continued great work in coming months.
This report reflects the committee’s read on our current organization and infrastructure for technology supporting campus learning. The committee’s next milestone is the creation of a new strategic plan for technology aligned with the university’s strategic mission and objectives.
Technology is an essential tool for facilitating learning at Clayton State—both directly through library and other research tools for faculty and students, and indirectly through financial systems and other technical means of supporting university activities. Whether the learning experience is on campus, or at some distant location, our students require a reliable infrastructure to access courses, research, data, and student services. Technology supports faculty as they deliver course content, communicate with students, and conduct research. Staff rely upon technology to provide those critical support services essential to the daily operation of the University. All three groups assume that technology will be available and usable. Therefore, our investments in, and management of, technology resources, and people necessary to support those resources, are essential to Clayton State’s strategic plan and vision.

Monthly Payroll Reminder

Due to the centralization of payroll services, approvals of all monthly time must be approved by 5 p.m., Friday, May 18, for the payroll ending on May 31, 2012.
Any monthly time taken after approval on May 18 will need to be reported on the monthly record of leave form located on the payroll web site listed below.

Scheduled Maintenance for GaView
GeorgiaVIEW is planning an additional scheduled maintenance from 10 p.m., Friday, May 18, 2012 until 7 a.m., Saturday, May 19, 2012. This maintenance involves the application of a Java certificate patch. Although the maintenance may not take the entire maintenance window, USG reserves the entire window in case of complications or if additional maintenance is necessary.
Accounting Services Says “Don’t Do It!”
It’s easy to overlook or set aside invoices and travel reimbursement requests at this time of year; but, we beg you to avoid the urge! Please submit your complete
reimbursement requests at least 10 days before the payment due date, so we can process them using normal (not emergency) protocols.
Your H: Drive in a Web Browser...
Working off campus has just gotten a little easier. OITS is pleased to release a new service that allows you to access your home folder (H: drive) from a web browser. If you’ve ever used a file manager before, you shouldn’t have any trouble figuring this out.
Just go to https://mydocs.clayton.edu
and log in with your Clayton State network credentials. This service allows you to upload, download, cut, copy, paste, and zip files and folders. You can also easily share folders with other Clayton State faculty and staff.

Free Car Seat Check Event at Sam’s Club of Morrow, May 19
WHO: Safe Kids Clayton County and the Clayton County Board of Health, along with co-sponsors Sam’s Club, the Clayton County Police Department, and Georgia State Patrol.
WHAT: Will host a Free Car Seat Check Event
WHEN: Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
WHERE: Sam’s Club, 7325 Jonesboro Rd., Morrow, Ga.
WHY: While seat belts are one of the most effective safety feature ever invented and have helped save thousands of lives, one in five Americans fail to regularly wear a seat belt when driving or riding in a motor vehicle.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), traffic accidents are the leading killer of children ages 10-19. While child safety seats are the best defense children have against traumatic injuries during a crash, four out of five seats are improperly installed.
The Safe Kids Clayton County Free Car Seat Check will promote proper seat belt and child safety seat use. During the event, parents will have the opportunity to learn how to install their child safety seats properly.

Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) Summer 2012 Registration
Registration for summer 2012 T.A.P. participants will begin on May 17, 2012. Please go to http://www.usg.edu/hr/benefits/tap_dates

- The tuition assistance program is available to full time benefits-eligible employees of the USG who have successfully completed at least six months of employment in a benefits-eligible position, as of the date of the TAP application deadline for the desired academic semester.
- TAP is a supplemental educational assistance employee program. An employee who is eligible for Pell Grants must apply his/her Pell Grant monies toward tuition and fees before receiving a TAP waiver.
- If an employee withdraws from an approved TAP course prior to its completion, the employee will be ineligible to participate in TAP for one semester.
- Eligibility for TAP participation does not guarantee admission into all University System of Georgia degree programs:
Participation in the TAP program does not guarantee continued employment with the University System of Georgia.
- An employee must follow the policies and procedures of the “teaching institution” in which he/she enrolls to be formally accepted as a TAP participant for limited-slot enrollment programs. Upon receiving approval to participate in a limited-slot enrollment program from the “teaching institution”, the course(s) should be listed on the TAP application.
- An employee will be required to go through the regular student admissions process, prior to applying for TAP; and an employee must complete a TAP application for each semester in attendance.
An employee may seek approval to enroll in up to nine academic semester credit hours for each of the three designated semester periods: fall Semester, spring Semester, and summer Semester.

Dining Dollar Plans Available for Students for Summer 2012
Dining Dollar plans will be available for students to purchase during the summer semester for use at any retail location. Dining Dollar plans can be purchased via the SWAN using Financial Aid May 16-23, or by cash or credit card anytime in the LakerCard Center. Remember, Dining Dollar purchases will save you seven percent sales tax. Unused Dining Dollars from the summer will carry forward to fall 2012.
Financial Aid Book Money Dates for Summer 2012
Financial Aid Book Money will be available in the Loch Shop May 16 – 23, 2012. During this time, up to $1,000 of your unused Financial Aid will be available for use in the Loch Shop to purchase textbooks, course materials, and other any merchandise you might need.
Dining Dollar Plans and Laptop Funds for Summer 2012
From May 16-23, 2012, you can purchase a Dining Dollar plan and/or request additional unused Financial Aid to purchase a laptop in the Loch Shop. During these dates, log in to the SWAN and click on the Essentials tab. Find the appropriate channel and submit your request. If Financial Aid funds are available, your request will be approved within about one business day. You will be notified via email.
Link to the Work/Home Life Balance Survey
The University is evaluating factors related to work-life balance for different members of the campus community. The Child Care Task Force is specifically interested in understanding how the campus community balances parental responsibilities with work and/or school responsibilities.
Please take a few minutes to complete the Work/Home Life Balance survey located at the link below. It will be available until May 21, but we encourage you to complete it as soon as possible. Your data will be confidential and will be used to help the University engage in planning activities that allow our campus to fully support students, staff, and faculty. Spivey Hall Children’s Choir to Conclude 2011/2012 Season this Weekend
All 170 members of the famed Spivey Hall Children’s Choir will be performing on the stage of Clayton State University’s equally-famed Spivey Hall this weekend, as part of a series of concerts that will conclude the Choir’s 2011/2012 season.
The Spivey Hall Young Artists and Spivey Hall Children's Choir will open the weekend’s program on Friday, May 18, as the talents and achievements of all 170 Spivey Hall Children’s Choir Program singers will be showcased in a 7 p.m. concert in Spivey Hall. Admission for this concert is $20 for adults and $10 for children.
On Saturday May 19 and Sunday, May 20, the Spivey Hall Children's Choir and the Spivey Hall Tour Choir will perform
with unmistakable spirit, refinement, and remarkable beauty of tone and expression. Both concerts will start at 3 p.m. The Tour Choir represents the 50 most advanced of these talented singers, and has also represented Spivey Hall, Clayton State University and Georgia in its travels throughout the U.S. and overseas.

SBDC Bringing Popular Starting a Business Class to Clayton State – East, May 23
The Clayton State University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will be bringing its popular Starting a Business class close to home this month.
After offering the class in Fayette, Henry and Spalding counties, SBDC is returning home, that is, just east of the main campus of Clayton State. The next Starting a Business class will be held at Clayton State – East, on Trammell Road in Morrow, on Wednesday, May 23, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Atlanta Export Symposium, May 23
Through his capacity as president of World Trade Center Atlanta, Clayton State Director of the Office of International Programs John Parkerson has arranged free attendance for any College of Business students or faculty who might wish to attend the Atlanta Export Symposium on May 23, at the World Trade Center.
This is an ambitious program, with outstanding sponsors and program panelists. It should provide excellent substantive content and networking opportunities for students who are interested in international business, international marketing and supply chain.

VRC Bringing Former VFW Commander-in-Chief to Campus for Memorial Day Speech, May 25
John F. Gwizdak, former (2000/2001) commander-in-chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is coming to the Clayton State University campus to speak on the occasion of Memorial Day.
Gwizdak, a resident of Raleigh, Ga., will be appearing at Clayton State on Friday, May 25 under the sponsorship of the University’s Veterans Resource Center (VRC), and a grant from the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. His address, which is free and open to the public, will start at noon in room UC272 of the James M. Baker University Center.
According to Shiraz Karaa, interim director of the VRC, Gwizdak will talk about the historical significance of Memorial Day and address student veterans about using their GI benefits and the importance of education and completing college.
Seventh Annual New Student Convocation Scheduled for Aug. 10
Clayton State University’s Seventh Annual New Student Convocation is scheduled to take place on Friday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Spivey Hall.
This year’s keynote address will be provided by Clayton State President Dr. Thomas J. Hynes. The ceremony’s purpose is to inspire, motivate and formally welcome new students into the university community.
Clayton State faculty and staff who participate in the procession portion of the ceremony are kindly requested to wear their academic regalia. Last year’s ceremony had its largest attendance for new students, faculty and staff.

Clayton State to Hold Annual Alumni Dinner at Turner Field’s 755 Club, Sept. 22
The Clayton State University Alumni Association will look to hit a grand slam once again at its 20th
Annual Alumni Dinner.
Next fall, the Alumni Association will hold its annual event at the 755 Club located at Turner Field. The Annual Dinner will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22. All Clayton State alumni, faculty/staff, students and friends of the University are invited to the event.
“We are so excited about having the opportunity to have our dinner at the 755 Club this year” says Alumni Association President Ben Hopkins. “We’ve had our annual event at some wonderful venues all over Atlanta and this will be another special night for alumni and friends.”
The dinner portion of the event will begin at 7 p.m., preceded by a reception; starting at 6:15 p.m. Attendees will also have the opportunity to take a special tour of Turner Field, which includes a behind-the-scenes look in the Atlanta Braves clubhouse.
In conjunction with the dinner, the Alumni Association will also recognize its 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award winners and hold a benefit auction.
