Clayton State Switching Banking Services to SunTrust
In April 2014, Clayton State University will be switching its banking services from Wells Fargo to SunTrustbank.
As a result, we will be switching to a SunTrust AMT in the James M. Baker University Center. In addition, Clayton State be able to offer the “SunTrust at Work” program to employees. OWLS Interest Meeting, Mar. 19
On Mar. 19, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., in room UC 272 of the Baker Center, Organizing Women for Lifelong Success (OWLS) is holding an interest meeting to recruit members and officers.

Clayton State Campus Mediation Tournament, Apr. 25
Mediation is a negotiation process in which the disputing parties are assisted by a neutral third-party — a mediator.
In fall of 2013, Clayton State University students won first place at the 2013 International Intercollegiate Mediation Tournament.
Help to continue that tradition and be part of the First Clayton State University Student Mediation Tournament, open to all Clayton State students.
Registration and training will be held on Mar. 21, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., in room T152 of the College of Business. The tournament will be held on Apr. 25, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., also in room T152 of College of Business.

35th Annual Sickle Cell Road Race/Walk, Apr. 12
The 35th Annual Sickle Cell Road Race/Walk will be held on Saturday, Apr. 12, starting at 9 a.m. at Welcome All Park in College Park.
Hosted by South Fulton Running Partners, the 7K (that’s right, it’s a 7K, or approximately 4.35 miles) is the RRCA State Championship and will also include a 4K (just under 2.5 miles – they must like odd distances) walk and a race expo on Friday, Apr. 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Runners can use their times for placement in the 2014 Peachtree Road Race.

Biology Seminar Speaker, Mar. 7
The next speaker to present at the Biology Seminar is Dr. Daniel Manvich, from the Department of Human Genetics at Emory University. The title of his talk is, "Inhibition of Norepinephrine Synthesis as a Potential Treatment for Cocaine Abuse." The talk will be Friday, Mar. 7, at 2:15 p.m. in LAB room 107.
Spring 2014 Facilities Advisory Committee Requests, Deadline Mar. 7
The Facilities Advisory Committee provides input and makes recommendations for new facilities or space needs, modifications to existing spaces, as well as dealing with facilities-related issues and long-term planning. Requests are reviewed at semi-annual Facilities Advisory Committee meetings in April and October.
The committee reviews and prioritizes the requests with reference to the Space Utilization Study report conducted by the Board of Regents in 2013 that documents each campuses’ space utilization metrics including Clayton State University’s.
The Facilities Advisory Committee is calling for facilities modifications requests for spring 2014. The Modification/Space Request Form is found on the Facilities Management web page at http://www.clayton.edu/facilities/planningdesign/facilitiescommittee. The completed form should be submitted to the appropriate Vice President for signature and transmitted to the committee by Mar. 7, 2014.
Vice Presidents will be notified by Mar. 14 whether they will need to submit PowerPoint presentations. Not all requests will lead to PowerPoint presentations before the committee. Presentations are due on Apr. 4. Presentations to the Facilities Committee will be conducted the week of Apr. 7 by those confirmed by the committee.

Our Genealogy Group Annual Workshop, Mar. 8
Our Genealogy Group will hold its Annual All Day Workshop for Beginners on Saturday, Mar. 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This genealogy workshop for beginners is free, but you must RSVP quickly! Only the first 50 are guaranteed a seat. Please RSVP to email@example.com. We will be unable to accommodate those who do not RSVP.
The workshop will be held in the James M. Baker University Center at Clayton State University. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

The first half of the day we will have speakers, and after lunch we will head to the Clayton State University Library to utilize the free genealogy programs offered by the University. You will also learn which of these programs are available to use free at home via the University website.
This will be a "hands on workshop," so bring your laptop or tablets, bring anything you need help with, bring your files and notes, and most importantly, bring a friend. With your RSVP, please let us know what brick walls you are running up against in your research. We will assign someone to help you with your issue, and hopefully get it resolved by the end of the workshop.
About a week before the workshop we will email to you all the handouts to be used during the day. Print them out and bring them in, or just use them on your laptop or tablet during the day.
Clayton State Celebrates National History Day, Mar. 8
Established in 1974, National History Day is a year-long academic program for school-aged students across grades six to 12. The contest is designed to promote skills in literacy and historical research and each year nearly half a million students across the country participate in regional, state, and national-level competitions.
This year Clayton State University will be piloting a Regional National History Day Competition for the Metro Atlanta area. This event represents an important partnership with the National Archives at Atlanta and the Georgia Humanities Council. We are excited by the response that we have received and expect to host 130 middle and high school students on Saturday, Mar. 8.
The competition will begin around 9 a.m., (in the Lecture Hall, the Baker center, and Arts & Sciences) and run through lunch. The awards ceremony will be held in the SAC and three contestants from each category will advance to the State-level competition at Mercer University where Georgia’s representatives for the National History Day Finals at the University of Maryland, College Park in June will be determined.
This Regional Competition will be an annual event for Clayton State and we thank our many participants and volunteers for their efforts. Faculty from Humanities and Teacher Education and other academic professionals from the Metro Atlanta area will be serving as judges for the competition and many of our students from the Honors College and from our Middle Grades and Secondary History Education programs have volunteered to serve as well.
This year’s theme is Rights and Responsibilities in History and students will compete across five categories, including: Historical Paper, Documentary, Exhibit, Performance, and Website. At both the junior and senior levels, students may compete as individuals or as groups in each of these categories.

Spring 2014 Visiting Writers Reading Series, Mar. 20
The spring 2014 edition of the Visiting Writers Reading Series will be held on Thursday, Mar. 20 and will feature a day with Mariahadessa Ekere Tallie.
Tallie is a writer, educator, and performer who has been a featured speaker at universities, festivals and events throughout Europe and North America. She is the poetry editor of the literary magazine African Voices. Her work deals with silence, sexism and racism.
Tallie’s day at Clayton State will begin at 11:15 a.m., with a lecture in room UC 272 of the James M. Baker University Center. Tallie will be speaking on finding empowerment through writing and being an African American woman, mother, writer, and herbalist.
After lunch, she will give a poetry reading from 2:10 p.m. to 3:25 p.m., also in UC 272. The reading will take 20 minutes and will be followed by a Q&A and book signing.
From 3:35 p.m. to 4:50 p.m. she will visit Dr. Brigitte Byrd’s Advanced Poetry class and meet with students from that class.

Job and Graduate School Fair, Mar. 20
The Office of Career Services will present its annual Job and Graduate School Fair for Clayton State students and alumni on Thursday, Mar. 20, in the Student Activities Center, from noon to 3 p.m.
The Job and Graduate School Fair brings dozens of organizations and graduate schools to campus for the opportunity to network with current Clayton State University students and graduates. Prospective employers will have opportunities for full-time, part-time and internship opportunities and graduate schools will share information about their programs.

ADHA President to Visit Clayton State, Mar. 26
American Dental Hygiene Association (ADHA) President Dr. Denise Bowers is scheduled to visit Clayton State Dental Hygiene students, staff and faculty while she is in the area attending the Hinman dental meeting on Wednesday, Mar. 26 at 2:30 p.m. The location is still to be determined.
Student Academic Conference, Mar. 28
The 2014 Student Academic Conference will be held on Friday, Mar. 28, from noon to 4 p.m. Students from all majors and disciplines may give a presentation in the form of a poster presentation, oral presentation, or performance (whether it’s musical, theater, poetry readings, etc.) reflecting their scholarly activity at Clayton State University.

There will be a keynote speaker from noon to 1 p.m. in room UC272 of the James M. Baker University Center. David Lowery is an American vocalist, songwriter and guitarist from San Antonio who received a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1984. He formed the alternative rock band Camper Van Beethoven and rock band called Cracker. He has also worked as a financial analyst, and started his own studio, record company and publishing company. He is a producer at the Sound of Music Studios in Richmond, Va.
In 2007, Lowery was appointed as an advisor to the collective action www.ThePoint.com which evolved into the social deals site www.Groupon.com.
In 2011, he began teaching the economics and finance of the music business at the University of Georgia.
Recently, he has become an outspoken critic of Silicon Valley and its aggressive attacks on artists and other content creators. He has testified to Congress twice on behalf of artists.
Lowery will speak about “Creativity,” the theme for the conference.
Poster presentations will go from noon to 2 p.m., and oral presentations will be from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Judges will be needed for the various sessions and to decide best presentations for awards. Get Up & Get Fit Video Contest, Deadline Extended to Mar. 31
Calling all Clayton State campus departments! Take a break from work and create a video of your staff showing how they Get Up & Get Fit throughout the workday.
Each participating department will make a video (90 seconds max) of its staff taking a break from the work day to engage in any form of exercise or physical activity (dancing, jogging, yoga, push-ups, etc.). The videos should be creative and inspire others to get up throughout the day and get fit.
Due to the obnoxious weather recently, the Get Fit Video submission deadline is extended to Monday, Mar. 31 at noon. Submit videos for the Get Up & Get Fit Incentive program to Lisa Williamson at firstname.lastname@example.org. The winning department will have its video posted to the Wellness Council Facebook page and departmental employees will receive free fitness and wellness assessments from Recreation & Wellness.
Dr. J. Micheal Crafton Named Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at University of West Georgia
Clayton State University Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. J. Micheal Crafton has been named the next Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of West Georgia.
“We will miss Dr. Crafton greatly, even as we wish him the best with our colleagues in Carrollton,” says Clayton State President Dr. Thomas Hynes. “Professionally, he has been a model leader. He has created the conditions in which a sense of urgency for actions has been consistent with shared and collaborative approaches to change. His leadership in many areas, such as strategic planning, enrollment management, Complete College Georgia, community engagement, to name but a few, has been exemplary. He brings perspective, intelligence, integrity, and good humor to academic affairs, and to the entire university.
“From a personal perspective, I have worked together with Micheal on academic projects at many levels since 1997. The foundation he has helped us establish here at Clayton State in academic affairs guarantees nothing but success for learning here in the future.”
“I have mixed emotions about this job change,” says Crafton. “I am happy not to drive 200 miles a day, but I am sad to not be on campus; I am happy to take on the exciting new challenges of West Georgia under President Marrero, but I am sad to leave the many, many projects and plans that many of us have concocted over the past five years and that have so much more possibilities; I am very happy to get back to my home institution and just my home; but I will be very sad to say good bye to so many people here who have made Clayton State a second home.

Baker Center Wells Fargo ATM Removed – Here are Your Options
The Wells Fargo ATM in the James M. Baker University Center had been removed earlier than scheduled. We plan to have a replacement ATM installed as soon as possible.
In the interim, if you need cash immediately then please follow these options below:
1. There are two Higher One ATMs on campus (foreign ATM charges may apply):
o On the first floor of the Baker University Center, outside the LakerCard Center
o On the first floor of Edgewater Hall, adjacent to the vending machines
2. Checks made payable to “CASH” may be cashed at the Bursar’s Office for up to $50. See other requirements at http://www.clayton.edu/bursar/Important-Registration-Information
3. There are two Wells Fargo branch locations near campus:
a. 6389 Jonesboro Rd., Morrow, Ga. (approximately one mile south of campus)

Applications Now Being Accepted for Women’s Forum Scholarships
Clayton State Women’s Forum announces that applications are now being accepted for 2014 Scholarships.
The General Student Scholarship is for undergraduate female students who have completed at least one semester at Clayton State, have at least two semesters remaining before graduation, and have an overall GPA of at least 2.8. The Staff Member Scholarship is for full-time regular, non-faculty female employees who are enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program. The application deadline for both scholarships is Monday, Mar. 25, 2014.
Women’s Forum also offers a Student Success Emergency Scholarship for a student who is near graduation and experiences a sudden emergency that would prevent her from continuing her progression toward degree completion. Applications for this scholarship are accepted throughout the year.
