Post-Bachelor Opportunities in Mental Health and Human Services, Mar. 31
Dr. Eckart Werther and Dr. Pearl Chang have organized a panel discussion for undergraduates and graduate students who may have interest in working in the human service/mental health disciplines. “Post-Bachelor Opportunities in Mental Health and Human Services” will be held from 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. on Monday, Mar. 31 in room B11 of the Lecture Hall. The event is co-sponsored by the Office of Career Services
It’s a chance to learn about careers and graduate studies in the Psychology, Social Work and Counseling fields from a panel composed of doctoral and masters levels professionals from the surrounding community. Each will discuss their educational background, professional activities and career trajectory. They will also answer questions regarding graduate study, job options, and professional development issues.
Included in the panel will be Clayton State Psychology graduate Dawn Deaton, who is a director of a mental health center.
Get Up & Get Fit Video Contest Reminder
Calling all Clayton State campus departments! Take a break from work and create a video of your staff showing how they Get Up & Get Fit throughout the workday. Each participating departments will make a video (90 seconds max) of its staff taking a break from the work day to engage in any form of exercise or physical activity (dancing, jogging, yoga, push-ups etc.). The videos should be creative and inspire others to get up throughout the day and get fit.
Submit videos for the Get Up & Get Fit Incentive program to Lisa Williamson firstname.lastname@example.org by Monday, Mar. 31 at noon. The winning department will have its video posted to the Wellness Council Facebook page and departmental employees will receive free fitness and wellness assessments from Recreation & Wellness.
School of Nursing Welcomes Barbara Nichols as its Next Faculty Scholar, Apr. 3, Apr. 4
The School of Nursing in the College of Health at Clayton State University will host its final Faculty Scholar for the 2013/14 academic year next week.
This spring’s Faculty Scholar is Barbara Nichols, president and CEO of Barbara Nichols Consulting and the former CEO of the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS International), prior to her June 2011 retirement. She will be making presentations in the Harry S. Downs Center on Thursday, Apr. 3 and Friday, Apr. 4.
The Spring 2014 School of Nursing Faculty Scholar program will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Apr. 3, with a reception, followed by Nichols’ presentation from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on "The Dynamics of Leadership: A Personal Perspective,” wherein she will discuss personal leadership experiences, lessons learned and skills and knowledge needed for success. On Friday, Nichols will talk on "Global Nursing: Leadership Beyond Boundaries,” discussing global leadership trends and issues impacting nursing, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Biology Seminar Speaker Series Presents Emory University’s Dr. Catherine Barrett, Apr. 4
The Clayton State University Biology Department’s Biology Speaker Series will feature Dr. Catherine Barrett from Emory University on Friday, Apr. 4. She will be speaker on how early life nurturing can affect social behaviors later in life.
Her presentation, “The Role of Oxytocin in Mediating Responses to Early Care," will begin at 2:15 p.m., in room 107 of the Clayton State LAB (the Laboratory Annex Building) and is free and open to the public.
How’s Your Elevator Pitch? Clayton State Offers College Students a Competition on Pitching Their Big Idea, Apr. 11
How’s your elevator pitch? College students from throughout Georgia will have a chance to find out on Friday, Apr. 11 when the College of Business at Clayton State University holds its first Elevator Pitch Competition at Clayton State from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
In case you’re not familiar with an elevator pitch, it’s a talk that quickly presents key information about a business idea regarding a product or service, one that can be given during the course of an elevator ride. The intent of an elevator pitch is to encourage a potential investor to further pursue an opportunity. In other words, according to Dr. Louis Jourdan, chair of the College of Business Department of Management, Marketing & Supply Chain Management and professor of Management, who’s organizing the event, it’s a chance to pitch a big idea. The competition is sponsored by Mitch Johnson with Primerica Financial Services.
In addition to Clayton State students, the College of Business is inviting students from other colleges and universities across the state, from the University of North Georgia to Savannah State, and from the University of West Georgia to Georgia Regents. The competition fee is $10, and registration through the website www.clayton.edu/business/Elevator-Pitch-Competition ends Apr. 4. In addition, the public is invited to hear the elevator pitches, and anyone can attend for free.
The competition presents an opportunity to refine professional skills and is open to students from all majors. The competition judges will be drawn from the corporate and education fields and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three pitches.

Graduate Nursing Program to Hold First Research Symposium, May 2
Dr. Victoria Foster, assistant professor of Nursing and interim director of Clayton State University’s Graduate Nursing Program, has announced that the Graduate Nursing Program will be holding the first of what it expects to be an annual series of Research Symposia.
The Research Symposium will be held on Friday, May 2, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Clayton State main campus in Morrow. The focus for the symposium will be clinical research and its impact on patient outcomes. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Elizabeth Tornquist, author of From Proposal to Publication: An Informal Guide to Writing About Nursing Research. Tornquist, who is retired from the University of North Carolina, travels across the country to speak about writing and publication. According to Foster, there will also be several dynamic and nationally-known nurse researchers/nurse scientists presenting their current research… providing Clayton State students and other attendees with an empowering opportunity within their profession.
“Our graduate students are exposed to educational research, but I wanted them to see and be aware of the importance of clinical research,” explains Foster. “That was the thinking behind creating the symposium.”
Among the presenters will be Clayton State Assistant Professor of Nursing Dr. Dee Tanner, who will be doing a podium as well as a poster presentation. Dr. Lisa Eichelberger, dean of the College of Health at Clayton State (of which the Graduate Nursing Program is a part), will discuss the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) Future of Nursing. She has been working with a group of other Georgia educators on IOM's mission. Also presenting will be Dr. Dawn Aycock and Dr. Patricia Clark, who are both faculty at Georgia State University, and will be presenting on their current research and different research methodologies.
In addition, Dr. Ora Strickland, dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at Florida International University, will speak about her research, but will also talk about leadership, since some of Clayton State’s graduate nursing students are in the leadership track.
Dental Hygiene Clinic is Looking for Children Patients
One of Clayton State University’s best-known and busiest community outreach programs, the public Dental Hygiene Clinic run by the Department of Dental Hygiene, is looking for young patients.
According to Department Chair Dr. Gail Barnes, the Dental Hygiene Clinic has experienced a shortage of children patients, especially children with mixed dentition, that is, both baby and permanent teeth.
“To meet their graduation requirements, senior dental hygiene students are required to provide oral care for a certain number of children,” she explains.
Although Clayton State does have a lot of non-traditional students, including some young dual-enrolled students and many older adult students, Barnes notes that most Clayton State students do not have young family members who can be patients at the clinic. As a result, Barnes is soliciting support from the Clayton State community and the community at large to assist the University’s Dental Hygiene students in this endeavor.
Appointments for the Dental Hygiene Clinic are available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for all ages, but especially for children. For a nominal fee, Clayton State Dental Hygiene students provide dental cleanings, sealants, fluoride treatments and x-rays under the direction of dental health clinical faculty.

Clayton State Athletics Ready to Kickoff 2014 Summer Youth Athletic Camps
The Clayton State Department of Athletics is preparing to kick-off its 2014 summer youth athletic camp schedule.
The first series of camps will begin the week of June 2. All camps are held on the campus of Clayton State University. The department offers athletic camps for boys and girls in the following sports: soccer, basketball, tennis, speed development and a general sports activities camp.
The week-long camps are offered to youth ages six-to-17 years-old and run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Half-day camps are also available either in the morning or in the afternoon. Campers may also choose to combine two different half-day camps if they wish.

Clayton State’s athletic camps are designed to provide the highest quality instruction in a safe, fun, and socially-enriching environment. The primary goal is for all campers to enjoy themselves while also learning and improving their skills.
Daily activities are led by Clayton State head coaches and focus on character building aspects of each individual sport, including self-esteem, discipline and responsibility. The camps combine small group instruction as well as game play to ensure development of fundamental skills and game knowledge.

Student Academic Conference Keynote Speaker David Lowery, Mar. 28
Clayton State University and the 2013–2014 Academic Conference Committee is honored to welcome David Lowery as the 2014 Student Academic Conference keynote speaker. The address will be held at noon in room UC 272 of the James M. Baker University Center on Friday, Mar. 28.
Lowery received a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1984. During his time in Santa Cruz, he founded the critically acclaimed ensemble Camper Van Beethoven and associated record label Pitch-a-Tent Records, helping jump-start the Indie Rock movement. In 1991, he moved on to the ensemble Cracker, which produced five top ten alternative/rock radio tracks and three platinum albums.
Lowery also produced a variety of albums for bands such as Counting Crows and Sparklehorse, and went on to found the Sound of Music Studios with John Morand. This studio, which recorded tracks for a wide range of artists from D’angelo to Lamb of God, later spun off Shockoe Noise LLC, which specialized in custom music for commercials, film, and TV.
In 2007, he was appointed as an advisor to the collective action website www.ThePoint.com which evolved into the social deals site www.Groupon.com.
In 2011, Lowery began teaching the economics and finance of the music business at the University of Georgia.
Recently, Lowery has been writing for www.thetrichordist.com. This blog examines Artists Rights in the digital age. He has become an outspoken critic of Silicon Valley and its aggressive attacks on artists and other content creators. He has testified to congress twice on behalf of artists.

Spivey Hall to Welcome Classical Guitarist David Russell, Apr. 4, Apr. 5
David Russell, a world-renowned classical guitarist known for his superb musicianship and inspired artistry, will be welcomed by Clayton State University’s Spivey Hall on Friday, Apr. 4 and Saturday, Apr. 5.
On Apr. 4, at 7:30 p.m., Russell will hold a Guitar Master Class in Spivey Hall. He then can be heard in concert on Apr. 5, at 8:15 p.m. For tickets to his concert, call the Spivey Hall Box Office at (678) 466-4200 or visit www.spiveyhall.org. Tickets for the concert are $40. Russell’s residency at Spivey Hall is funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Georgia Council for the Arts.
Russell has earned the highest praise from audiences and critics alike, including the 2005 Grammy award in the category of best instrumental soloist in classical music for his CD Aire Latino. In recognition of his talent and his international career, he was named a Fellow of The Royal Academy of Music in London in 1997. During his studies at the Royal Academy, he twice won the Julian Bream Guitar Prize. Later he won numerous international competitions, including the Andrés Segovia Competition, the José Ramírez Competition and Spain’s prestigious Francisco Tárrega Competition.
Since 1995 Russell has an exclusive recording contract with Telarc International, with which he has recorded 16 CDs. He currently spends his time touring the world, appearing regularly at prestigious halls in main cities such as New York, London, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Madrid, Toronto or Rome.
The New York Times wrote about his performance: "… Mr. Russell made his mastery evident without ever deviating from an approach that places musical values above mere display. It was apparent to the audience throughout the recital that Mr. Russell possesses a talent of extraordinary dimension."
Clayton State to Host Workshop in Corporate Communication Design and Management, Apr. 7
The Corporate Communication program at Clayton State, in conjunction with the TRUST Student Corporate Communication Agency will host a workshop in advertising design and agency management on the Morrow campus on Monday, Apr. 7. Special guest speakers at the event include two leaders in the industry who have a wealth of international experience in graphic design, digital arts and management.
Anna Terry has been working in the visual communications industry as an arts educator and graphic designer for more than 25 years. She is the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence at Southern Poly, where she also lectures in New Media Arts, Design, Drawing and Art Appreciation. Terry has worked and taught in New Zealand, China and Colombia.
Don Hunter is an educator, artist and manager who has worked, studied and taught in New Zealand and The Netherlands. Hunter taught Sculptural Design, Observational Drawing, and has spent much of his career directing an international arts logistics company. He has also worked in local government as an arts advocate, working in urban design teams. Terry and Hunter are collaborating in authoring a book on “Creative Process.”
The workshop will take place on Apr. 7, from 12:45 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the James M. Baker University Center, room 265.
The workshop is being sponsored by the Communication and Media Studies program of the Visual and Performing Arts Department at Clayton State University, in conjunction with the recently founded TRUST Student Communication Agency.
“This is a terrific opportunity for students at Clayton State who have any interest in the persuasion industries or in art and design,” notes Assistant Professor Dr. Susan McFarlane-Alvarez, who teaches Corporate Communication and advises students of TRUST. “The workshop by Anna and Don promises to guide our student practitioners in the realities of corporate design and how to manage creative resources and ideas toward meeting strategic objectives.”

CIMS Student Awards Ceremony, Apr. 11
On Friday, Apr.11, the College of Information and Mathematical Sciences (CIMS) will host the Ninth Annual Student Awards Ceremony in the James Baker University Center Commons to honor CIMS students who have excelled academically.
Computer Science (CS), and Information Technology (IT) majors will receive awards in several categories: IT Experiential Learning Student of the Year, IT Outstanding Scholars Award, CS Outstanding Scholar Award, and the CIMS Chancellor's Academic Recognition Award. Several awards are available for Mathematics majors: the Rising Senior Awards, the Annita Hunt Award, and the Billie R. Nail Award and Scholarship.
The highest honor bestowed by CIMS is the Catherine Cowan Aust Award, presented to the "best all-around CIMS major." Dean's List students in all majors and Math Club, ACM, and Wi^2STEM officers will be recognized as well.

Clayton State Campus Mediation Tournament, Apr. 25
Mediation is a negotiation process in which the disputing parties are assisted by a neutral third-party — a mediator.
In fall of 2013, Clayton State University students won first place at the 2013 International Intercollegiate Mediation Tournament.
Help to continue that tradition and be part of the First Clayton State University Student Mediation Tournament, open to all Clayton State students.

Communications Conference on Social Media, May 12, May 13
The Communications Conference on Social Media is sponsored by the University System of Georgia and the Technical College System of Georgia. This conference is designed for all employees of the USG and TCSG System offices and institutions that have any involvement or interest in social media. Each session is designed to give high-level insight into the different aspects of efficiently using social media in higher education.
The conference will be held on Monday, May 12 and Tuesday, May 13 at the Marriott Macon City Center, 240 Coliseum Dr., Macon, Ga. New Dream Catchers Program!
The legend of the dream catcher embodies the idea that only good dreams are filtered through the netting allowing the good to pass through the feathers to the people. Clayton State is an entire community that rallies around the individual dreams and aspirations of its people. A student’s authorization to enroll in courses at Clayton State University is conditional upon acceptance of all terms and conditions set forth in the Registration Agreement. Students must agree to the mandatory terms and conditions when they enter the registration system, and only then they will be permitted to proceed to registration. Students who do not accept the terms and conditions of the Registration Agreement will not be permitted to register in courses at Clayton State University.
New Motorcycle Parking Space
The motorcycle parking space has been relocated to a more noticeable location. It is now in an end of the row space in Lot D across from the Arts and Sciences Building.

Tickets for the Vagina Monologues are Now on Sale
Tickets for Clayton State University’s 2014 performance of “The Vagina Monologues” will be on sale beginning this week through Apr. 11.
You may purchase your tickets on Main Street in the James M. Baker University Center for the one time performance on Apr. 12, at 2 p.m. in the Student Activities Center Ballroom.
This performance promises to make you laugh, cry and learn something you didn’t know about vaginas. Tickets for all Clayton State affiliates are $5, tickets for the general public are $10. All proceeds will be donated to Southern Crescent Sexual Assault Center.
Survey on Evening/Weekend Support by the HUB, CID and M&PS
The ITC subcommittee has recently developed a survey to gather the faculty, staff and students’ thoughts on evening and weekend technical support for the Hub, the Center for Instructional Development, and Academic Technology/Media and Print Services and we would like to engage as many faculty, staff, and students as possible.

Center for Continuing Education Offering English as a Second Language Classes
The Center for Continuing Education at Clayton State University will be offering English as a Second Language (ESOL) classes at the Center for Continuing Education in Morrow beginning in April 2014.
Information Sessions and Assessments for the ESL classes will be held at the Harry S. Downs Center on the Clayton State main campus on Monday, Apr. 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and on Wednesday, Apr. 16, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the CSU East location.
Students need only to attend one of the Information Session. Classes will begin the week of Apr.28.
