Clayton State University coordinator, Division of Music, and director of Opera and Vocal Studies Dr. Kurt-Alexander Zeller will be returning to his hometown of Portland, Ore., next month to direct a Sacred in Opera (SIO) production during the convention of the National Opera Association (NOA).
The SIO initiative of NOA will present “The Shepherds of the Delectable Mountains” Act IV, Scene II from The Pilgrim’s Progress
by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and excerpts from The Masque of Angels
by Dominick Argento. The performance will take place on Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at 7:30 p.m., at the First Congregational Church in downtown Portland, located at 1126 SW Park Ave., three blocks from the NOA convention site at the Hilton Hotel.
In addition to Zeller’s stage direction, Ruth Dobson will serve as production coordinator. Both are members of the Sacred in Opera committee of NOA. Portland’s Consonare Chorale, conducted by Georgina Philippson (a former student of Zeller’s), will provide the chorus for both excerpts. Metropolitan Opera baritone Richard Zeller will sing the role of the Pilgrim in the Vaughan Williams and well-known Portland baritone Kevin Walsh sings the role of Metatron in The Masque of Angels
. NOA President-Elect David Holley joins the cast of the Vaughan Williams as the Messenger.
