Georgia Board of Regents member, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport general manager to be May commencement speakers
A member of the Georgia Board of Regents and the general manager of the world's busiest airport will speak to hundreds of graduates during Spring commencement on Saturday, May 6.
Clayton State University has announced that Sachin Shailendra, president of SG Contracting, Inc., and Roosevelt Council, Jr., Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport General Manager, will serve as commencement speakers.
About Sachin Shailendra
Shailendra is a lifelong resident of Atlanta and is a passionate supporter of the Atlanta community. He graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in Civil Engineering and also is an alumnus of Woodward Academy, where he has served as past president of the alumni association.
Shailendra heads up an Atlanta-based general contracting and project management company whose portfolio includes the Atlanta International School, Chastain Medical Center, Carl Sanders YMCA and the Clayton County Justice Center.
Shailendra has held esteemed roles in education and nonprofit, including being appointed by Georgia Governor Nathan Deal to the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. He also is a board member of the Georgia REACH Foundation (Realizing Education Achievement Can Happen); and he also sits on the Board of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s Sports Network. Most recently, Sachin was appointed to the Board of Directors of the YMCA of Metro Atlanta and the Buckhead CID.
Shailendra has been recognized by the Atlanta Business Chronicle as a top business and community leader in their annual “40 under 40” issue, and Atlanta Magazine has named him among their top 10 “up-and-coming” Atlantans for his efforts in progressive and proactive community building.
Shailendra’s roots tie him to Clayton State. Not only did he grow up in the Morrow neighborhood, but his mother took classes at the University and his cousin is a graduate.
About Roosevelt Council, Jr.
Council was recently named Airport General Manager at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in January 2017. Council oversees airport operations as well as a $6 billion capital improvement program that will pave the way for growth over the next 20 years.
Previously, Mr. Council was the Airport deputy general manager and chief financial officer. In that role, he directed all accounting, budgeting, financial analysis and forecasting, procurement and treasury operations at the airport.
Council has more than 25 years of experience as a financial professional in public accounting, communications, transportation logistics and the public sector.
He joined the City of Atlanta in 2009 as budget and fiscal policy chief and later served as deputy chief financial officer, both under former Mayor Shirley Franklin. Prior to joining the airport, he served as interim CFO for the City of Atlanta under the leadership of Mayor Kasim Reed.
Council also served as CFO of the Georgia Technology Authority, where he was responsible for general accounting, budget, cost accounting, financial reporting, payroll and strategic planning.
Council’s community work extends to his role on the Board of Advisers for the Metro Atlanta Chamber. He also is a member of the Atlanta Technical College Local Board of Directors and the 100 Black Men of Atlanta.
He is a graduate of Memphis State University, the Harvard University Executive Leadership Program and the Georgia Leadership Council.
