Clayton State University’s faculty and staff were recognized for their commitment to educating students and serving others during the 2018 Annual Service Awards on May 1.
Held in Spivey Hall, the ceremony celebrated faculty and staff through recognizing years of service, tenure, promotions, retirement and accomplishments.
The winners of the Alice J. Smith Awards, an honor given to the most outstanding faculty and staff members nominated by their peers, were announced during the event.
Cassandra Jones, telecommunications administrator, won the staff award, while Jillian Jones, lecturer in the College of Information and Mathematical Sciences, received the faculty award.
Both women were shocked by the selections and expressed gratitude to their colleagues for choosing them for the honor.
“I was completely and totally overjoyed and grateful to have been nominated,” Cassandra said. “I work with wonderful, inspirational, and supportive peers every day and I felt so humbly honored to have won a prestigious award. I thoroughly enjoy my work and learning new things every day, and I only want to help people whenever I can be of any assistance.”
The moment was also encouraging as both Smith Award winners sought out Clayton State to earn degrees, signaling the impact the university has had on its faculty and staff as an institution that not only works to empower students, but also serves as a place where employees are supported in their own academic pursuits.
“I started as a student in 1999,” Jillian said. “I worked as a student assistant in the Institutional Resources Office and then was hired on. I have been here forever. I never thought that [earning this award] would happen to me.”
Nearly 90 employees across campus received certificates or plaques for their years of service ranging from 5 to 30 years. Twenty-three individuals were presented Retiree Awards.
The University also announced the six University Professorship Award winners for making a meaningful impact in the lives of students and colleagues– Dr. Antoinette Miller, Dr. Adam Tate, Dr. Leon Prieto, Dr. Victoria Foster, Dr. Keith Driscoll, and Dr. Mari Banks.
More than 20 faculty were promoted or awarded tenure. Bailey Harvil, a recent graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences, was presented with the 2018 Chancellor’s Academic Achievement Award, the highest awarded given by the University System of Georgia to a student.
The Annual Service Awards ceremony is sponsored by the Clayton State University Foundation.
