The recent Earth Week Celebration at Clayton State University was highlighted by an art contest, a campus clean up event and conservation efforts by and on behalf of Clayton State Dining. All of the Earth Week activities were sponsored by Sodexo and the Go Green student organization.
Approximately 20 Clayton State students participated in the campus clean up. The students spilt up into smaller groups and each group picked up trash in a designated area of the campus. The event was coordinated by the Go Green organization, but students from the Clayton State Honors Society and the Clayton State Baptist Collegiate Ministries also participated.
The results of Clayton State Dining's Think Green Celebration Recycle Art Contest were as follows:
First Place: "My Candid Camera," submitted by Aaron Panlilio (Jonesboro)
Second Place: "Float Away," submitted by Amber Nguyen (Morrow)
Third Place: "Phoenix Flower," submitted by Brandon Campbell (Morrow)
Fourth Place: "Sea Boat," submitted by Mark Morrow (Jonesboro)
The art contest was looking for the best “trash-formation.” Participants were encouraged to express their artistic ability using recyclable materials to create art. Panlilio’s grand prize was a mini-fridge filled with Coca-Cola product.
Other Earth Week initiatives included; Grounds for Growth (using recycled coffee grounds for composting), the Choose To Reuse Discount (35 cents off anyone using their own travel mug for a drink), Lights Out (the Lakeside Dining Hall went without lights for a day), and PB&J Day.
