The Clayton State University Department of Campus Life in collaboration with the Campus Events Council (CEC), Diversity Educational Experiences for Peers (D.E.E.P) Educators, Disability Resource Center (DRC), and Department of Recreation and Wellness (DRW) is hosting the inaugural Diversity and Disability Awareness (DDA) Week at Clayton State through Thursday, Nov. 4.
The goals of DDA are to educate and promote awareness regarding disabilities and galvanize dialogues regarding controversial topics such as race, class, and gender, and to encourage the campus to stand together and advocate against discriminatory behavior in our communities and beyond.

Event: Special Needs or Special Wants? Determining Whether, When, and/or how to Assist Students with Disabilities
Time: 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Location: UC 272
This session will provide a forum in which Clayton State faculty and staff can openly discuss accommodation requests and/or issues surrounding the provision of accommodations to students with disabilities. Topics will include, but are not limited to, student expectations, staff and faculty obligations, when a request may be denied, when a request must be fulfilled, who decides any and all of the above, when and how faculty can object or refuse an accommodation, etc. The presenter, Tamara Rorie, J.D., will provide case scenarios and examples to illustrate various points and will encourage discussion of scenarios, situations and questions provided by the audience in order to make the session as practical and useful as possible.

Event: DDA Kick-Off Celebration

The D.E.E.P Peer Educators will formally kick-off Diversity and Disability Awareness Week on UC Main Street with a featured attraction, The Human Race Machine. The Human Race Machine is a computerized console composed of four different programs. The Human Race Machine program allows participants to see themselves with the facial characteristics of six different races: Asian, White, African, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, and Indian, mapped onto their own face. A second feature of the machine allows viewers to see an aged version of his or her face. Additionally, individuals will have the opportunity to sign-up for DDA Seated Volleyball that will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 2.

Event: DDA Movie Showcase – “Radio”
Time: 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Location: Student Activities Center (SAC) Ballroom C
“Radio,” released in October 2003, is a film directed by Mike Tollin that is based on the true story of T. L. Hanna High School football coach Harold Jones and a mentally-challenged young man James Robert "Radio" Kennedy.

Event: DDA Seated Volleyball Game
Time: 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Location: SAC Gym
On the SAC Courts, Campus Life, D.E.E.P Peer Educators, and the Department of Recreation and Wellness will be hosting a seated volleyball game so able-bodied individuals can understand participation in physical activities without the use of their legs. Individuals can sign up from Wednesday, Oct. 27 through Tuesday, Nov. 2, on Main Street at the D.E.E.P Peer Educator table.

Event: DDA Affirmative Action Bake Sale
Time: 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Location: UC Main Street
Items such as cookies, cupcakes and brownies will be sold at different prices depending on the customer's race and sex, imitating the racial and sexual preference practices of affirmative action.

Event: DDA Affirmative Action Dialogue Discussion
Time: 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

The D.E.E.P Peer Educators will moderate a follow-up discussion regarding the Affirmative Action bake sale and review some sections of the Affirmative Action policy.

Event: “Walk in My Shoes” Discussion

The D.E.E.P Peer Educators will moderate a discussion on disability and race.
