School of Business Students Working with Disney College Program to Earn Academic Credit
Clayton State University School of Business Career Advisor Sanford Dennis and The Disney College Program have joined teams to create an externship opportunity for current Clayton State business students.
The Clayton State program was created and developed by Dennis and currently has two Clayton State students participating. Desaree Overton is a sophomore from Columbus, Ga., who attended Hardaway High School. She currently majors in Management and her current Disney job is in Food and Beverage. Jessica Phillips, a junior from Orlando, Fla., graduated from Jonesboro High School in Jonesboro, is also majoring in Management and participating in a Disney food and beverage position.
Although Overton and Phillips are the first participants, there are many Clayton State business students interested in the program, says Dennis, who notes that the response to the program has garnered students who will participate in coming semesters.
The Disney College Program offers students a chance to earn work experience as well as earn academic credit. Disney has a full academic faculty/staff in Orlando that functions just like a regular college with full-time instructors and adjuncts. Disney offers a full array of courses that are modeled after a traditional business curriculum. Students sit in a classroom and participate in lectures just like a regular class.
Along with providing the traditional college atmosphere for students, Disney also offers an array of courses such as; Organizational Leadership, Human Resource Management, Organizational Management, and Hospitality Management.
In addition to these course offerings, Disney also offers low-cost housing for students.
Consequently, similar programs with Disney have emerged on other campuses nationwide as well, including Purdue, University of Iowa, Tulane, Central Michigan University, Georgia College & State University, and the University of Central Florida.
While any Clayton State student is welcome to apply to the Disney College Program, only business majors can apply through the program that the Clayton State School of Business has created, since the program created by the School of Business is designated with the school’s curriculum for those Business students participating. Clayton State business students have to apply for the program and be accepted by the School of Business for the program.
