Career Services: Helping Students Enter the Work Force and Making Dreams Real
The Office of Career Services is the go-to department at Clayton State University for help finding internships and jobs; resume, cover letter, and curriculum vita advice and revising; as well as career mentoring. Laker Nation is familiar with the services of this department and have been singing its praises for decades.
Many students rave that Career Services has helped them find employment immediately after graduation. Drameka Griggs, a criminal justice major who graduated in spring 2014 proudly states that because of Career Services she is the newest member of the Forest Park Police Department.
“I am grateful to Career Services because they invested time in me during Senior Career Academy, which helped me prepare for the job that I selected,” states Griggs. “Career Services believed in me even when I doubted myself!”
The Senior Career Academy is one of many events Career Services caters to students. The academy is a series of workshops and informational sessions designed to help students who are close to graduation get their ducks in a row. This event is very popular on campus and there is no question why after seeing its success.
Aditi Patel, a fall 2013 Healthcare Management graduate, also took advantage of this unique opportunity and expresses appreciation for the varied workshops and attributes this to the skills that she learned.
“I developed interviewing skills; learned how to prepare a professional cover letter, resume, and thank you letter; and learned how to succeed while employed as a professional during my first year of employment!” exclaims Patel.
Other popular programs hosted by the department include Career Coaching and the Walk-in Resume Review.
After attending Career Coaching, Wakenia Hollman, a spring 2014 Sociology graduate, states that she received invaluable guidance that gave her a greater level of confidence.
“The counselors in Career Services really take the time to understand their students’ needs in order to provide the best advice possible,” explains Hollman. “Thanks to Clayton State Career Service, I was hired for a full-time position at Enterprise Rent-a-Car prior to graduation.”
Spring 2014 Health Administration graduate Stephen Moody (pictured on the Clayton State home page) attributes his success to the Walk-in Resume Review hosted by Career Services.
“It was during this program that I learned how to identify and properly list the important attributes of my past experiences on my resume,” states Moody, “This valuable resource was a necessary tool that enabled me to promote myself and attain my new position.”
Alexis Corley is also grateful for the resume help.
“I really believe that getting my resume critiqued on a regular basis and attending the various workshops sponsored by Career Service helped me to land my position with Green Mountain Coffee Roasters,” she says.
Corley was touched by the attention and concern that the department showed her during her search for an internship.
“I don’t have the words to express how much I appreciate all of the resources provided by the Career Services office, and I wish more students would take advantage of all the knowledge that this office imparts!” she exclaims.
