Benita BowdenThe relationship alumni have with Clayton State may begin at very different stages of life. Some alumni first came on to campus early as a dual enrolled student and others first experienced their alma mater as nontraditional students later in life—maybe a veteran or looking for a new career. However, no matter when it first begins, the relationship never ends. You are Forever a Laker.

Two-time graduate Benita Bowden embodies this relationship more than most. Earning a bachelor’s degree in Psychology & Human Services in 2008 and a master’s degree in Heath Administration in 2012, Bowden was looking in 2015 for training in Medical Coding.

She had looked into a few other programs, but she found herself back at Clayton State, specifically at the Center for Continuing and Professional Education (CaPE). She says, “I (had) first-hand knowledge of the gem that this institution is” and getting her certification from Clayton State was a “no-brainer.”

As is available for all active Alumni Association members, Bowden, Central Staffing Coordinator at Piedmont Healthcare, took advantage of the 10 percent alumni discount on her continuing education course.

“Ten percent doesn’t usually sound like much, but the saying ‘every little bit helps’ couldn’t be more true because it did make a difference,” she says.

CaPE offers programs in event and meeting planning certification, American Sign Language, light commercial HVAC certification, project management, voice over certification, and many more. With courses ranging from $200 to $3,500, a 10 percent discount can save alumni up to $350—equal to ten years of Alumni Association membership dues.

“We offer certificate programs, workshops, and online courses designed for the working professional who seeks career advancement and personal enrichment. If you are trying to take that next step in your career, gain an industry credential, or build a company, CaPE has the resources needed to support your dreams,” says Dr. Karen LaMarsh, Director of Continuing Education at Clayton State University.

Become a member today of the Alumni Association to help support educational and social programming—and become eligible for the 10 percent discount on improving your career opportunities and continuing the lifelong pursuit of education all Clayton State alumni have.
