Bookstore Bash – May 5 to May 10
The new Clayton State Bookstore will be holding its official Grand Opening Monday, May 5, at 8 a.m. To commemorate the occasion, a Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day will be held on Tuesday, May 6 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Come for light refreshments and save 20 percent on all imprinted clothing and gift purchases. (Excluding clearance items.) Free gift wrapping is also available.
Also during the week of May 5-10, 2008, students will receive a 15 percent discount, with coupon, on Clayton State University imprinted apparel and gifts (excluding clearance items). Coupons are available on the University Bookstore front page, accessible through the www.clayton.edu website and are good through the entire week. The Graduating Class of 2008 will also have a 15 percent discount coupon…again, accessible from our front page. Coupons may not be combined and must be used during the week of May 5-10, 2008 only. Discount applies to regular priced and sale items only…clearance items are excluded. Students using the Graduation coupon must present proof of graduation (i.e. letter of graduation, cap and gown, etc.)
Geniuses Wanted
Seriously… in November, Atlanta Magazine will publish its first "Genius Issue" profiling brilliant Atlantans. To qualify, an individual should be at the top of his/her field or a pioneer in a new field. The Atlanta Regional Commission of Higher Education (ARCHE) has asked each member institution to submit a list of potential candidates for this issue of Atlanta Magazine. Department heads, deans, VPs, etc., if you have exceptionally brilliant Atlantans associated with your area -- faculty, students, alumni – notify John Shiffert in University Relations with the details by May 7.
Judge Michael Baird to Speak at Clayton State Commencement, May 10
Judge Michael Baird will serve at the commencement speaker at Clayton State University’s 38th Annual Spring Commencement on Saturday, May 10, 2008.
As has been the case for the past several years, Clayton State will hold two ceremonies. The first, starting at 9 a.m., will be for graduates of the College of Arts & Sciences. A total of 195 graduates are expected to participate. The second ceremony, scheduled for a noon start, will be for the graduates of the School of Business, the College of Information and Mathematical Sciences, the College of Professional Studies, and the School of Nursing. A total of 207 graduates are expected to participate in the second ceremony.
Baird was a member of the first baccalaureate class of Clayton State University, earning a B.B.A. in Management (1989). He is also a 1992 graduate of the Georgia State University College of Law where he earned a Juris Doctorate. A native of Clayton County, Baird worked his way through college as a police officer with the Lake City Police Department.
Postage Going Postal, May 12
Starting May 12, 2008, the price of a first class stamp will increase to 42 (count ‘em, 42) cents. Loans to buy a book of stamps are available from your friendly neighborhood lender. The stamps themselves are available for sale in the LakerCard Center; which will accept cash, check, debit cards, credit cards, LakerCards (and maybe your first-born or the key to Ft. Knox) for payment.
Wendy Burns-Ardolino to Read at Fayette County Library, May 13
Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Integrative Studies Dr. Wendy Burns-Ardolino will be reading at the Fayette County Library, 1821 Heritage Park Way, Fayetteville, on Tuesday, May 13. Burns-Ardolino will be reading at 7 p.m. from her new and provocative book, “Jiggle: (Re)Shaping American Women,” which looks at the reshaping of American women… or, at least, the cultural significance of the relationship between American women and their bodies as mediated by both traditional and contemporary foundation garments.

Dr. Wendy Burns-Ardolino reports that she still has copies of her new book, “Jiggle:(Re)Shaping American Women,” available in her office in Arts & Sciences, room 110-C. She is selling copies for $30 and would be happy to sign any copies that folks have purchased who couldn’t make it to the book signing last week.
School of Graduate Studies Holding Next Open House, May 13
The Clayton State University School of Graduate Studies will be holding its monthly informational Open House on Tuesday, May 13 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The Open House will give prospective graduate students a chance to learn more about the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, Master of Business Administration, Master of Health Administration, and Master of Science in Nursing. The event will be held in Room 201 of the University’s Harry S. Downs Center. The School of Graduate Studies will be holding open houses on the second Tuesday evening of each month for the foreseeable future.

Staff Council Appreciation Day, June 3, June 4
Mark your calendars right now for June 4. It will be a great day when Clayton State goes to the Carnival. Staff Council wants to make a special “Appreciation Day” this year. Just be a kid and enjoy the Carnival full of laughter, games, and all kinds of “Carnival” food. More details will be coming, but go ahead and save the day for the fun. But don’t worry, we will still have a fantastic speaker and refreshments with many door prizes the day before, on June 3.
Admitted Student Celebration Postponed Until June
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions’ annual Admitted Student Celebration has been postponed from Saturday, Apr. 26 until some time in June.
Third Annual New Student Convocation & Reception, Aug. 26
Members of the faculty are invited to participate in the Third Annual New Student Convocation on Tuesday, Aug. 26, from 11:30 a.m. to12:30 p.m. in Spivey Hall. This will be a ceremony intended to inspire, motivate and officially welcome new students to Clayton State University.
As per faculty feedback regarding last year’s program, the suggestion to return to regalia is kindly requested for this year’s event. Please allow eight to 10 weeks for turnaround time if you plan to order or rent regalia. Contact the University Bookstore or Linda Campbell at LindaCampbell@Clayton.edu for additional ordering information.
The program will provide an opportunity for students to connect with their faculty, staff and classmates. Upon completion of the ceremony, students and faculty will have the opportunity to interact during a reception (designated colleges/school signage will be posted). Faculty support at last year’s event was phenomenal. Approximately 140 faculty and staff and 240 students were in attendance for the program. Your continued support and assistance is greatly needed and appreciated.

AP Policy for Check Requests
Please note that the processing time required for all payments is five to seven business days from the time the request is received in Accounts Payable. For example, if a check request or travel reimbursement request (with all appropriate documentation) is received in our office by noon on Wednesday, Apr. 30, 2008, the check will be processed no later than Friday, May 9, 2008.

Spivey Hall Children’s Choir Releases New CD, I’ll be Seeing You
The Spivey Hall Children’s Choir announces the release of its third CD, I’ll Be Seeing You, now available through Spivey Hall at Clayton State University.
I’ll Be Seeing You presents a collection of favorite works performed throughout the history of the Spivey Hall Children’s Choir. Recorded live in Spivey Hall in the spring of 2006, the CD, produced by ACA Digital Recording, Inc. of Atlanta, features 21 songs sung by 48 of the most advanced students in the program conducted by Dr. Martha Shaw, founding artistic director of the Spivey Hall Children’s Choir and professor of music at Shorter College in Rome, Ga., with piano accompaniment by assistant director Judy Kerlin Mason.
Copies of I’ll Be Seeing You (ACA CM20101) priced at $15 are available from the Spivey Hall Box Office, (678) 466-4200, and may be purchased via credit card, cash or check. All proceeds from sales of the CD benefit the Spivey Hall Children’s Choir annual touring activities, which this summer include participation in the Pacific International Children’s Choir Festival (PICC Fest) and a performance on June 28, 2008 at the prestigious Oregon Bach Festival in Eugene, Ore.
Habitat for Humanity Looking for Volunteers for First Women’s Build
Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity announces its first Womenıs Build. Sure to be a fun-filled and fulfilling endeavor.

- May 5, 2008- Last bid opening date for FY 2008 purchases. After this date all purchases must be made from a statewide contract.
Purchase Requisitions Submitted to Procurement Services:
- May 9, 2008-All purchases requiring a purchase order. Any purchases made after this date must be by statewide contract only. Anything requested after this date must be approved by Budget & Finance.
- May 23, 2008-No change orders to PO’s after this date.
P-Card Cutoff Dates:
- May 15, 2008- Last day to use the p-card so that the purchase will be charged on the June 15, 2008 Visa statement. Any purchases on future statements will be charged to fiscal year 2009.
Budget Amendment Requests:
- May 5, 2008- All budget amendments for FY 2008 submitted to Scott McElroy.
Check Request and Travel Reimbursement Deadlines:
- June 20, 2008- Last day for all travel related requests for FY 2008 submitted to Procurement Services.
