The Department of Humanities offers majors in Spanish and French and minors in French and Spanish.
Our goal is to help students to become proficient communicators and to understand the culture and literature of another country. We play an integral role in the University's important goal of creating global citizens by offering students a world class education in the language and culture of other countries.
Why Study a World Language?
Studies in this discipline help students increase their awareness of their own values and beliefs as well as those of another culture; aid in preparing teachers for language teaching careers; provide language skills and cultural awareness to students specializing in other academic areas; enable students to meet the language requirements of graduate programs in the study of languages and comparative literature; and prepare students for various careers in an increasingly global society. Starting salaries for students graduating with proficiency in one or more foreign languages are at least 20 percent higher than for students who speak English only. Learn More

“Morals are an acquirement - like music, like a foreign language, like piety, poker, paralysis - no man is born with them."
“Those who know nothing of foreign languages know nothing of their own."
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
“Knowledge of languages is the doorway to wisdom.”
