Center for Business and International Negotiation Supports Ebola Relief Fund for Sierra Leone
Working through the Center for Business and International Negotiation (CBIN) in the College of Business at Clayton State University, Associate Dean of Business Dr. Diane Fulton and Associate Professor of Law and CBIN Director Dr. Judith Ogden have developed training programs for Sierra Leone.
Now, the Center is working on a different kind of support for the west African country – an on-going drive to collect supplies to help Sierra Leone cope with the on-going Ebola crisis. The drive is sponsored by the Clayton State Mediation Team, CBIN and Clayton State student Sia Amadu, a Legal Studies major from Lithonia, who is a native of Sierra Leone.
Donations are being solicited from the entire Clayton State community and the public at large and include non-perishable grocery items, such as bags of rice, or canned goods such as luncheon meat, corned beef, sardines, and tomato paste; and personal care or healthcare products such as soap, lotion, Vaseline, bleach, gloves, toilet paper. Cash or check donations are also being accepted.
“Despite increased aid to Sierra Leone, Ebola still rages,” says Ogden. “Almost 4000 deaths have been confirmed in Sierra Leone alone. All of the country’s resources have been devoted to fighting the disease, making every day provisions expensive and difficult to obtain.
“We sent our first barrel of supplies at the end of May. We will start up again in the fall semester to send a second barrel. Donations of food and supplies came from all over the Clayton State campus. And, College of Business faculty made cash donations to pay for the barrel and for shipping.”
Ogden also notes the Clayton State Sociology lecturer Taralyn Keese, is associated with the House of Dawn, an organization working with homeless teenage mothers that had also been collecting items for Sierra Leone, and that that organization added their collection to the barrel.
As for the Sierra Leone training, Fulton and Ogden helped with the curriculum to be used in the “Women’s Political Empowerment in Sierra Leone - A Path to Sustainable Peace” program.
“We developed materials on Leadership, Communication, and Conflict Resolution skills. We are working on this with Mediators Beyond Borders, International,” says Ogden.
