In a practical approach to teaching English as a second language (ESL) in an English-speaking country, as a foreign language (EFL) in another country, or English for special purposes (ESP) and contract training. The focus is on developing curriculum for teaching listening, speaking, reading and writing English for formal and informal communication in the workplace, the community, and the school. We explore traditional and contemporary approaches to language teaching and include a practicum whereby the learner has the opportunity to practice teaching, and practice developing programs, courses, and lessons. In addition, we examine content-based language learning, computer-assisted learning, and online delivery component for teaching and learning.

Mrs. Leigh Lawrence has over 20 years of experience in higher education as a student services specialist. Her background includes teaching, counseling, academic advising, and serving as a director of student activities. In 2007, Mrs. Lawrence earned her Global TESOL Certificate and worked as an English as a Second Language instructor at the Latin American Association, Asian-American Resource Center, and Business Linguistics. Currently she is the lead instructor for the Global TESOL Certificate Program offered through the Center for Continuing Education at Clayton State University. She created and developed a career component for the Global TESOL Certificate Program, which includes consulting, career presentations, and job referrals for TESOL students and graduates. Her personal global experience includes traveling in European and Caribbean locales. In addition she is an online English instructor with eTeacher Group, an international online language academy. Mrs. Lawrence holds a Master of Arts degree in Counseling from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Currently she is a candidate for the Master of Science in Education degree with a concentration in TESOL from Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia.
Sarah Anne Shope, PhD, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in teaching English to speaker of other languages and teacher training. She has been active in developing and facilitating Global TESOL training courses and programs, and her areas of expertise include applied linguistics/language acquisition, issues of culture and language, methodology for teaching English as a second language and/or foreign language, creative and academic writing and world literature. As a professional writer, she has considerable commercial, literary and academic publication credits, and is the author of Global TESOL: An Orientation Guide to Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. She holds a Master of Education in TESOL, Master of Arts in Professional Writing, and PhD in Education.

Teaching Methodology and Assessment: Methodology includes lecture, interactive small-group studies, multi-linguistic activities, and 25% online component.
Criteria for Successful Completion: At a minimum, for a Clayton State University Continuing Education Certificate and CEUs: 80% of all class sessions attendance, active participation and a completed evaluation for the course. In addition, completion of the online component is required.
