The Center is working on the Sierra Leone Project with Mediators Beyond Borders (MMB) which began with an invitation to MBB from local groups including women, men, students, tribal leaders and government officials to provide conflict resolution training in anticipation of the national elections which had previously been plagued by violence.
The Sierra Leone Project is planning to start an Institute for Leadership and Peace Building to serve as the umbrella organization for the on-going Sierra Leone Project, and to eventually expand to a wider West African community. Initially, the institute would implement a Women's Leadership Empowerment Program for the Women Against Violence and Exploitation Society (WAVES) group to enhance their leadership skills with topics such as identification of root causes of situations, problem solving, action planning, negotiating tools, consensus building, and communication for change. They will also conduct mediation training for tribal chiefs, community leaders, and religious leaders to increase empathetic listening, teamwork, collaboration, and negotiation strategies. Furthermore, our research will help to support and strengthen the project and to increase understanding of Sierra Leone as a nation.
