We have always been told to follow our dreams and indulge in our passion. However, as college students, at some point, we are all hit with the same punch, REALITY! Many people have degrees collecting dust on the mantelpiece because they were unsure of the details of their major. Let’s be honest here; we collect thousands of dollars in student debt, spend countless hours studying for exams, and invest a ton of time trying to attain a degree to advance in life. It is absurd to choose a major without doing the proper research.
Personally, I have faced this same challenge as a college student. After two years of college, I discovered that the field I was majoring in was not needed in the job market. This revelation came to me through the Occupational Outlook Handbook provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This site gave me a different perspective of the direction I needed to take in college. I would consider this handbook the Holy Grail for a college student’s success. It provides all-inclusive information about every major in the job market today. This information includes: job options for every major, salary information, descriptions of the job field, education and training needed, the highest paid field, the fastest growing fields, jobs needed in the market, and much more.
Although I embrace the cliché of following your dreams, it is important that we align those dreams with prosperity. I would encourage every student to look at the Occupational Handbook to assure that the major you chose will bring success. Remember the choices we make today affect our lives tomorrow! Let’s all choose wisely.
