Thomas W. Giffin brings 13 years of fundraising experience and 15 years of communication skills to the position of Director of Development at Clayton State University.
“It is an exciting time in the history of the Clayton State University Foundation,” Giffin recently stated. “With the Dream Makers Scholarship Initiative, the new Corporate Partners Program, the expansion of the Legacy Society, and the Annual Professorship project, friends of the university hold a renewed excitement regarding philanthropy and creating a brighter future for our students and our institution through private funding.”
The majority of Giffin’s experience lies in the higher education field. Thomas previously worked in development at Clemson University, Virginia Tech, Coker College, UNC-Pembroke, and Potomac State College. At both Virginia Tech and Clemson, he was responsible for growing the pipeline of donors in a specific area the state of Florida for Clemson, and the Graduate School and the University Honors Program at Virginia Tech. Giffin also served as the Chief Development Officer for the Western Carolinas Region of the American Red Cross.
Giffin, also has years of experience in public relations, marketing, communications, and alumni affairs. He holds a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from Shippensburg State University in Pennsylvania, and Giffin secured several national awards within the United Way of America system while working as the Vice President of Marketing and Communications at the United Way of Berks County in Reading, Pennsylvania.
The Cumberland, Maryland, native has written numerous feature stories for the, “Giving Section,” of the Clayton State website and the university’s alumni magazine. A member of several non-profit advisory boards and the Noontime Rotary Club of Clayton County, Giffin writes a weekly bulletin and maintains the content on the website for the local Rotary organization.
Other community organizations that Giffin is involved with include the United Way in Coweta and Clayton Counties, the Rainbow House in Clayton County, and the Clayton Fund for the Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta. He also serves as a volunteer for the local Meals-on-Wheels effort.
“My Clayton State duties and my involvement in various civic organizations have given me the opportunity to interact with a spectrum of community leaders, corporations, and generous and caring citizens throughout the metropolitan Atlanta region,” Giffin commented. “I strongly believe that the Southern Crescent will continue to grow and prosper, and I am confident that Clayton State University, its leadership, and its students will be a vital part of that success.”
Giffin earned his masters of science degree in sports administration at St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida, and his associates degree in Media Technology at Allegany College in Maryland. He is married to Terry Lynn Giffin, and the couple resides in Newnan, Georgia.
